eismcc··on Is anyone still using assembly language? You betcha (2007)
I’ve not used this but looks promising

eismcc··on Advice for Overcoming Writer’s Block (2016)
There’s two things coming to mind:

1) Reminds me of that story about clay sculptures where they focused on quantity on one team and quality on the other. The quantity team produced better art.

2) this applies to startups or anything like that where just doing something and adjusting is more valuable than analysis paralysis

eismcc··on Narcissism is rampant, so how do we address it?
Only you can stop narcissism.
eismcc··on Learning Chess at 40 (2016)
I think it's more along the lines of playing against HAL9000. HAL politely beats you and asks you for another game.
eismcc··on Learning Chess at 40 (2016)
After training AI Go engine for competitions and seeing an AI learn more in one weekend than I can in one lifetime, I feel it's hard to be motivated to learn this kind of thing. I feel like I'm training my bespoke artisanal neural network.
eismcc··on Thinking Machines – Introduction to Data Parallel Supercomputing (1989)
Yeah, same. I still have the scientific American mag issue that they talked about the CM-1 in
eismcc··on Thinking Machines – Introduction to Data Parallel Supercomputing (1989)
Having spoken to someone who was there (Steve Omohundro who wrote StarLisp), the lack of floating point and extreme parallelism were actually a pain because everything had to be written from scratch. Steve gave me an example that they wrote over 200 algorithms in a new way, including parallel regex (as I recall). So while amazing hardware and ideas, there was a sense that it was along road to purse the actual goal of AI research.
eismcc··on Thinking in an array language
Was gonna say the same plus kdb+ is a columnar store so you can get vectorizarion in your sql execution as well.
eismcc··on Thinking in an array language
That’s because numpy is based on J which is based on APL
eismcc··on You're Not Losing Fat Because You're Eating Too Damn Much (2016)
Great article. Even as an endurance athlete I struggle to lose weight w/o intermittent fasting and I can only do that in the off-season. Knowing your body comp also will help understand what’s going on - get a smart scale.

One metric I find useful is that if you don’t wake hungry you are probably eating too much. Dial back slightly until you wake hungry.

eismcc··on IBM's Asshole Test
Yes this was our strategy when I interviewed folks at Microsoft and some companies later. Key point being what happens when they hit the unknown.
eismcc··on Inform 7 v10.1.0 is now open-source
you could go back to the original LISP

eismcc··on Google almost convinced me to spend $400 on useless laser treatments
I had almost the exact same experience. Sitting in the chair prepped for a cleaning and the DH dives into this tale about “bad bacteria” and how if it gets into my stomach during the cleaning I could have all kinds of problems including heart disease and so on. Then the follow up treatment plan had other “beneficial” procedures not covered by insurance - platelet treatment to improve healing. I called the insurance company to ask about the plan and discovered the uncovered items were more than the actual procedure itself. The dentist wouldn’t negotiate or change to a code the insurance company recommended.

eismcc··on The specs behind the specs – a deep-dive on ASN.1
I owned the Microsoft ASN1 library for a while around 2005. It was a maintenance nightmare and I spent a lot of time fixing static analysis derived issues.

That said, I always found the standard quite interesting with different encodings based on the degree of prior shared info or format. My assumption is that not-invented-here is part of the why it’s not used.

eismcc··on Processing billions of events in real time
I was involved in World Cup features and it definitely would spike around goals. Maybe 2-3x as I recall but it was always surprising to me how “low” the tweet volume was relative to the read volume.
eismcc··on Ask HN: How do I get out of kdb+/q (and other niches)
I’ve spent a fair amount of time recently reading about kdb (and family) and I’d think a lot of the skills you need to use it are very applicable to other systems. You may even be further ahead of the game than you realize. The main gap I’d guess would be the jump from finance process to product process. That’s just time and I’d just start interviewing.
eismcc··on Processing billions of events in real time
When I was at Twitter (6yrs ago now) they averaged around 5k tweets/s. There were MANY more notifications and other system type events.
eismcc··on Ask HN: How is the “metaverse” concept different from the Second Life boom?
Maybe like Ready Player One, people will use Meta if the outside / real word sucks enough. Here you can be anything you want to be…
eismcc··on Micro – a modern and intuitive terminal-based text editor
Yes, that’s why it needed a rewrite. Particularly in terms of handling large files.
eismcc··on Micro – a modern and intuitive terminal-based text editor
At point while on the Windows kernel team, I was working on a port of edit.exe but when I left the team, development stopped. I was initially going for a identical replacement with a replica menu system but behind able to handle large files, modern capabilities.
eismcc··on Richard Feynman and the Connection Machine (1989)
Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve looked for info about this before but didn’t find it.

eismcc··on How Discord Stores Billions of Messages (2017)

eismcc··on Ask HN: Which vintage computers do you find interesting?
Z80 machines w/ CP/M and the IMSAI 8080. I like the old IMSAI 8080 machines and got to use one many years ago and it’s fun and visceral to program with machine code. direct understanding.
eismcc··on Zoom to Acquire Five9
Apparently a cloud contacts as a service provider
eismcc··on Inserting a billion rows in SQLite under a minute
This idea is mentioned as one of the future work at the bottom.
eismcc··on Column – High-performance, columnar, in-memory store with bitmap indexing in Go
Calcite is Java based, hence my question
eismcc··on Column – High-performance, columnar, in-memory store with bitmap indexing in Go
Is there a Go equivalent of Calcite? If so, could probably bolt that onto the query path and work in the logical plan translation to the physical plan - which is the query API that’s currently provided.
eismcc··on Flu has disappeared worldwide during the Covid pandemic
I think I got sick a lot from poorly ventilated meeting rooms. I can recall multiple times coming into a room with stale air smell and get sick not long after.
