eisfresser··on Revealing the details of how OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face
This page prevents Noir from applying dark mode. As a visually impaired reader, I can barely read it. Blocking accessibility tools excludes readers and is not appropriate for a scientific publication. Please consider supporting dark mode or at least not overriding it.

The Home Assistant showcase looks fabulous.

Is this what Anthropic meant with this blogpost https://www.anthropic.com/news/detecting-and-preventing-dist... ? Alibaba was not mentioned, though.
eisfresser··on Statement from Dario Amodei on our discussions with the Department of War
> mass __domestic__ surveillance is incompatible with democratic values

But mass surveillance of Australians or Danes is alligned with democratic values as long as it's the Americans doing it?

I don't think the moral high ground Anthropic is taking here is high enough.

It is time to rewatch Terminator 2.
eisfresser··on OpenClaw is what Apple intelligence should have been
Not really. Giving the weather forecast or playing music seems pretty low risk to me.
eisfresser··on Trump 25% tariff on European allies until Denmark sells Greenland to US
Americans consumer may continue to buy European goods at a higher price, but that's only roughly a third of the pie. The bigger part is European firms selling intermediate goods and capital goods to companies. There is not fuzzy preference in that marked, it's very cost driven. The extra tarif will tilt the balance heavily in favour of domestic producer.

And these tarifs will not go away quickly. Those domestic producers who benefited will lobby hard to keep them, no matter who sits in the white house.

Such a great name for a humorous project. My wife rated it 'very cool'. I think I finally found a reason to connect a display to my HA. Thank you for sharing.
eisfresser··on Efficient method to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
We use the CO2 to synthesize methanol with the H2 we electrolyze using surplus solar energy. The methanol we burn in winter for heat. Yes, that releases the CO2 again. The goal here is not to save the planet. It is to bring solar energy to winter. My house produces many times the electricity that it needs per year, but most of it is wasted in summer. Efficient conversion is not a factor. If I can get 20% of the energy input back as heat in winter, it is worth it: that is oil or wood I don't have to burn for heat.

ChatGPT is totally fluid in German and French (i.e.), their market size is my no means limited to the anglosphere.
eisfresser··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
Totally. It's miserable. We are watching cycling through HBO max at the moment, where it is still affordable. We get on TNT for the TdF because Rob Hatch. Surely it will go down the drain even further when the Ellisons get it.
eisfresser··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
Yes, they really killed MTB. If only Re Bull TV would buy the Discovery/Eurosport part. Or GCN!

> another deep seek kinda of breakthrough

That was only six month ago. I don't think this is an argument that things are slowing down (yet).

eisfresser··on Ask HN: Cursor or Windsurf?
Windsurf at the moment. It now can run multiple "flows" in parallel, so I can set one cascade off to look into a bug somewhere while another cascade implements a feature elswhere in the code base. The LLMs spit out their tokens in the background, I drop in eventually to reveiew and accept or ask for further changes.
eisfresser··on Electric cars suffer 'unsustainable' depreciation in secondhand market
I agree that there is a lot of uncertainty about the longevity of batteries. However, it seems to me that the extra depreciation is driven by price cuts of new electric cars. The article mentions an "electric car could expect to lose £24,000 in value over three years, while a similarly priced petrol car could lose £17,000" - Naturally, given that the sales price of the EV came down by £7,000 last year alone (i.e. Tesla Y).
eisfresser··on Ask HN: When did multiple environments become standard practice?
I started my first job as a software developer in 1990. We ran only the production environment and of course had lenghty down times. I changed jobs frequently and by about 1994, I found dev and prod environments everywhere. By 1998, dev/test/prod setups were the norm.
