eindiran··on YouTube's ad blocker crackdown escalates, aggravating users
You understand we are talking about Google Ads right? Of course they are double-dipping; they use your YT premium video info as more fuel for their internet-spanning ad network megalith. They don't need to show you ads in the videos themselves to be double-dipping.
eindiran··on Judge pares down artists' AI copyright lawsuit against Midjourney, Stability AI
This notion that the creators and artists are raking up the wealth generated by people consuming their creations is obviously wrong. Intellectual property in general, but especially copyright, has been a colossal failure -- rent-seeking middlemen have emerged to swallow up the financial dividends of the creative. The idea that someone can sell access to your work without you being rewarded is ALREADY how things work. Copyright as it stands is just a way to give rent-seeking middlemen a moat, not a protection for creatives.
eindiran··on Sober-curious movement: Non-alcoholic drink options grow
The word "sober" here is being used like it is used by eg NA/AA; "sober" = exclusively sober (excluding caffeine and nicotine).
eindiran··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment
I encourage you to commute daily via BART for 5+ years and come away with the impression that I am "exaggerat[ing] how often it happens".
eindiran··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment
A road rage incident where someone pulls out a gun is notable enough to get a newspaper article. Phone snatching, seeing people smoke meth on BART, encountering disgusting things, etc, etc are daily occurrences. This is not an apples to apples comparison.
eindiran··on Why America Is Out of Ammunition
> And now, with a dramatic upsurge in need for everything from missiles to artillery shells to bullets, we’re starting to see cracks in the vaunted U.S. military.

Ah yes, bullets, famous for not being intended for use in small arms.

> In Lake City, Missouri, the largest small arms ammunition plant in the world has decided all ammo production is going to the military, meaning that there is going to be a domestic shortage for hunters, sportsmen, and maybe even police.

eindiran··on Hacker leaks millions more 23andMe user records on cybercrime forum
What is the John Donne quote again? Of course there is moral ambiguity about it. You can live your life pretending your actions don't have consequences for other people, but don't expect people to enjoy living in your wake.
eindiran··on The Meta glassholes have arrived
At least in my experience this is true is of major cities in Germany, UK, US, Canada, and Australia.
eindiran··on NY bill would require a criminal history check for the purchase of a 3D printer
Again, we're talking about casting. Take a look at an Owen or a Sten and get back to me on what parts you think can be plausibly lost-PLA casted.
eindiran··on NY bill would require a criminal history check for the purchase of a 3D printer
This is in the context of firearms, which are presumably modern repeating firearms, where they will cease to function if the tolerances are wrong.
eindiran··on NY bill would require a criminal history check for the purchase of a 3D printer
Again with the casting in this thread. What parts are you imagining you can make this way? Modern small arms generally require quite good tolerances. If you aren't going for that (which you clearly aren't because you chose casting lol), just buy a pipe and move on.
eindiran··on NY bill would require a criminal history check for the purchase of a 3D printer
> the easiest thing to do would be to create the part with the printer, then use it to form a mold for casting the part out of metal

This is definitely not true for parts that need to be closely toleranced. Lost-PLA casting, DIY mold-making, etc are manufacturing processes not world-renowned for their ability to keep things precise.

eindiran··on Are we heading for World War Three?
Legitimate question, not trying to be snarky, is this not self-evident to you? The fighting in Donbass eventually leading to a hot war between Ukraine and Russia doesn't seem like a step up in the fighting? Israel dropping enough JDAMs into the Gaza strip to turn Khan Yunis into crunchy sand doesn't feel like things are getting worse? The political situation in the Black Sea feels like it has slowly but surely gotten more tense, the sites of the Yugoslav wars are heating up...
eindiran··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
The skinnerbox whaling department; now with built-in hardware support!
eindiran··on Satya Nadella Says Copilot Will Be as Significant as the PC
iOS is a smartphone/tablet OS, I'm not sure how you think it should be used in corporate environments. If you're talking about macOS and the fact that there are no servers running it, that is fair enough, but OP was talking about iOS specifically.

eindiran··on Bandcamp has been sold to Songtradr. What does this mean for the musicians?
I have also purchased music on Amazon and let's not pretend its "full on downloads", Amazon has V0 MP3 only iirc and Bandcamp offers ever format under the sun including FLAC and ALAC.

Don't know about Apple because iTunes doesn't have Linux support and the whole setup of downloading an app in order to download a file strikes me as a bit gross.

eindiran··on Dotfiles Matter
I don't think its surprising at all that a document entitled "Dotfiles Matter" about not dumping Unix-style dotfile configuration files into a user's home directory doesn't mention an operating system that doesn't use Unix-style configuration dotfiles.
eindiran··on California doubles taxes on guns and ammunition to pay for school security
The enormous success of low cost manufacturers like PSA suggests that this is not true.
eindiran··on FCC aims to reinstate net neutrality after us Democrats gain control of panel
> The internet developed with "net neutrality" because that's how ARPANET and later the internet had always worked.

OP is making a claim about de jure net neutrality, you are making a claim about de facto net neutrality.

eindiran··on Kikkuli: Why do some people from the distant past become memes?
> You see some weird reference on reddit to an obscure idea. And you see it again on another social media platform just a few hours or days later. And then, you notice it pop up again and again in the coming months. And you get that impression, that the person referencing it subsequently, like yourself, saw the earlier reference.

Though I agree that sometimes we can trace the spread of memes in this way, a lot of this feeling is attributable to the frequency illusion, aka the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon[0].

eindiran··on Newly discovered deep-sea enzyme breaks down PET plastic
I was recently at a party and spent some time talking with someone who has a stealth startup working on this exact problem. He said that they aren't the first, but getting the scale right (in an industrial setting) and finances right enough that someone is willing to spend the money to set it up is far harder than just finding an enzyme that can break down PET / similar polymers.
eindiran··on LLMs are surprisingly great at compressing media, DeepMind researchers find
Before I read the article, I was about to comment something like "generation, prediction and compression are broadly isomorphic to one another, so I don't think it should be "surprisingly" great."

But this is about audio and image compression using text models, which is quite surprising!

eindiran··on Ask HN: Do you keep a work journal?
Work specific notes are local only, but my other notes I store in a git repo.
eindiran··on Fat Men's Clubs (2016)
> younger generations now are better informed, more empathetic and curious.

None of the generational research I have seen even remotely supports the "better informed" conclusion, and my anecdata from interacting with current undergrads suggests the opposite very strongly -- current undergrads are *substantially* less well-informed than the zillenials and millenials were about politics, current events, etc.

Not sure about about empathetic and curious, though those smell less implausible.

eindiran··on U.S. Cities Have a Staggering Problem of Kia and Hyundai Thefts
I experienced this one first hand, in a smaller city - New Haven, CT. When I spoke to the officer that found the car, he reported that most of the cities nearby (relatively small cities in Connecticut like Milford, Bridgeport, etc) have seen a sharp rise in car thefts and virtually all of that has been Kias/Hyundais.
eindiran··on Don’t throw out those used coffee grounds–use them for 3D printing instead
Based on what can be seen behind him at 0:46 (DWIN screen) it is a significantly modified Ender 3V2 or Ender 3 S1/S1 Pro. Based the design of the gantry, I think it is the Ender 3V2.
eindiran··on Ask HN: Do you keep a work journal?
I have a script that runs once a week, generating a new dated .md file with section headers (eg particular projects) and core info already populated. Throughout the week I just update notes in the .md file. If needed, I copy over things from week to week to preserve some context. I have another script the moves untouched .md files into an archive directory after some time has elapsed. I can then look over all of the day-to-day/week-to-week notes on a per-project basis at eg the end of the year, and have both a high-level overview and all the details.

When I need to let people know what I've been working on, or do standup, or remember what I did 6 months ago, its all there.

eindiran··on Ask HN: How to do literal web searches after Google destroyed the “ ” feature?
I think OP's point is that this isn't a deterministic system for a given query. The feature flags set for the particular user (are you in the verbatim or no-verbatim branch of today's AB test), and the timestamp are also inputs.
eindiran··on Update on KDP Title Creation Limits
Damn had no idea about wild ginger. That is a bummer.
