eikenberry··on Nature's capacity to 'bounce back' when species are lost is overestimated: study
That is a story about nature bouncing back. Just not the way the people doing it thought it would as it turned out other 'stuff' was a lot bouncier than the Cod were.
eikenberry··on Pixel 11 doesn't yet meet the GrapheneOS security standards and may be skipped
True.. but aren't they the only gov that can force a breakup?
eikenberry··on Pixel 11 doesn't yet meet the GrapheneOS security standards and may be skipped
It's only illegal if the law is enforced and the US federal government gave up on anti-trust enforcement a long time ago and any attempts to re-awaken it get nerfed quick.
eikenberry··on OpenAI "rogue" agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
> I think enough of these improperly constrained agent events have occurred that we can safely say this is misconduct of a level necessitating serious and concerted regulation of AI labs.

Why jump to regulation when just simple law enforcement would suffice. All of these OpenAI "rogue agent" events have been illegal, but no DA is enforcing them.

eikenberry··on One month coding with GLM 5.3 Flash
What would you use if you wanted to stay (at least) open weight?
eikenberry··on DraftKings Is Using AI to Behaviorally Target Chronic Gamblers
I stopped smoking 15-20 years back and still remember it fondly. It is definitely a pleasant, if smelly, experience.
eikenberry··on Go Concurrency Distilled
Try writing CSP style code and see how channels slot in. That is the design they had in mind.
eikenberry··on Btrfs/ZFS/bcachefs under workloads classic benchmarks skip
Sabotage might not be the best word, but it hurt trust and adoption.
eikenberry··on I don't like passkeys
Right. That's the flaw I was pointing out.
eikenberry··on I don't like passkeys
Keys can be copied very easily. It’s one of their primary features. Can you easily copy your USB key?
eikenberry··on Small programming tricks
Early returns is one method.
eikenberry··on Global Shortage Has Led to Motor Oil Rationing at Costco
Wouldn't the most important thing be the nitrate fertilizers? Do we have anything to replace them?
eikenberry··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
And 2 is lucky it is the sum of 1+1.
eikenberry··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
> * In a just society, your opportunity in life should not depend on being lucky with who your parents are.

The vast majority of people are raised by their birth parents which means 0 luck was involved. You are here due to their actions and are who you are due to their combined genes and situation.

eikenberry··on Show HN: Toast, a beautiful by default in terminal IDE
But this is not what that site tracks. It lists any project with any LLM usage or potential usage (eg. permissive AI usage policy, but no evidence of AI use) without any caveats. It is an extreme, absolutely no AI usage, stance.
eikenberry··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
Any word on if they will be fixing the flight model? Didn't see it in there but could have missed it.
eikenberry··on Function Arguments Are Not Function Colors
Maybe.. something like how Zig works where it passes the I/O object around that encapsulates the required concurrency around the bottlenecks?
eikenberry··on Function Arguments Are Not Function Colors
IMO it is a syntax thing. If you need to use a special keyword (eg. func vs async func) then it is colored. If it is a semantics thing (eg. parameters) is is not colored.
eikenberry··on Babylonian Lamb Stew with Beets (1750–1730 BCE)
Close to a recipe on Tasting History... https://www.tastinghistory.com/recipes/babylonianlambstew Our current favorite dinner watching along with Alton Brown.
eikenberry··on Asahi Linux on M3
I think it is more the technical challenge of doing it that drives development than any target users.
eikenberry··on A/I shuts down
This is such a small blip in all the crap this administration is perpetrating that most are probably not aware of it or are drowned out in the rage over inflation, tariffs, wars, immigrants, etc.
eikenberry··on Your intellectual fly is open (2025)
+1... this is me as well. Using LLMs in a conversational mode does not fit my thinking. I use AI help in my editor through targeted code generation, explanations, etc. and I'm writing my own harness to hopefully get a better feel for the shape of LLMs that way. How are you adapting?
eikenberry··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
It’s not up to them. It is up to the DA.
eikenberry··on K2 Horizon: A connected fleet of six open models
Why do you make the worse choice and not use what you would prefer to use? You have been able to "get shit done" on Linux for nearly 30 years. Have the courage of your convictions.
eikenberry··on Earth's organisms developed via evolution. What if the cosmos did, too?
Why does there need to be an original?
eikenberry··on The Post-AI Internet Doesn't Look Great
> Don't romanticize the internet. The modern internet has torn society apart at the seams. It's made the world less tolerable and made civic discourse impossible.

Pretty much the same thing the printing press did. Breakthrough communication technologies force underlying societal problems to the surface. It will end up being a good thing long term as long as we survive it.

eikenberry··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
It doesn't block the inline ads between story and comments on reddit.. my benchmark for browser ad blocking and ublock-origin is one of the few (only?) that does it. This is why I use the Orion browser on iOS.
eikenberry··on Carmack: Has early Scratch experience led to fulfilling careers?
I programmed in Basic some as a kid but it was programming a MUSH (Amber-MUSH) in grad school that got me hooked and changed career course to programming. Made some great friends too.
eikenberry··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
What does that have to do with it? Debian developers are the audience and most of them are not programmers. And the parent post was speaking even more generally.
eikenberry··on GLM-5.3 is now open-weight
