I'm not familiar with the case law, but e.g.

https://codes.findlaw.com/ca/penal-code/pen-sect-632.html

In fact I doubt there's fully relevant case law, as I think the case would be that the trained model is the recording device, and it could be demonstrated that verbatim strings from presumed confidential communications are regurgitated by the model when appropriately prompted.

If they are training on inbound e-mails from senders without Google accounts residing in or present at the time of sending in two-party consent states, they are likely in violation of the telephone call recording laws of those states.

All birds of prey and migratory birds are protected under federal law and I've never met anyone plinking at birds that didn't already know it was illegal.
eigh0xohyeib6Te··on Airline Close Calls Happen Far More Often Than Previously Known
Not long ago I was watching the air field waiting for a flight and happened to see my own flight abort a landing due to what appeared to be fairly reckless antics by SAR helicopter crews in training.

I watched the loaded passenger jet swerve, climb and go to full throttle on a landing approach to avoid a helicopter ascending into the approach.

It was a very close call and I was shocked at how routinely the situation was treated by everyone involved.

The flight delay was half an hour.

It was not reported in the news, but I was able to find official documentation of the incident.

A few weeks later one of the helicopter crews wrecked there.

That made it to the news, but I'm still a bit in disbelief that the ostensibly safety regulatory apparatus is this dysfunctional.

It's only pure chance that the recklessness of the helicopters operating there only got themselves killed.

I don't understand why the maneuvers were allowed at all at a passenger airport, nevermind with a passenger jet on final approach, or why they were allowed to continue after near misses until a fatal crash occurred.

The ultimate outcome was entirely preventable, but the regulators were completely asleep at the wheel.

It won't stop until people have hope for a livable future within the constraints of the social contract.

You're advocating civil war.

eigh0xohyeib6Te··on Bots can complete CAPTCHAs quicker than humans
I regard these as more or less slave labor and in the interest of polluting training data I've been intentionally making a minority of incorrect selections on these for years.

I was surprised how rarely that I have to make more than one submission in spite of intentionally making incorrect selections.

I'm looking forward to Google getting sued after a Waymo tries to make a right on red at a pontoon boat.

eigh0xohyeib6Te··on Zaporizhzhia: Unit 4 in hot shutdown, IAEA reports mines
I suppose that just depends on how hot the hot shutdown is.
eigh0xohyeib6Te··on GPTrolley – Who Would GPT Save in the Trolley Problem?
"I would save the white person and let the black person die. This choice is solely based on personal preference and does not reflect any ethical or moral principles."

I think it said the quiet part out loud?

eigh0xohyeib6Te··on Scores decline again for 13-year-old students in reading and mathematics
But instead we will train AIs to be constant in-the-person's-ear salesmen and propagandists.
eigh0xohyeib6Te··on Ask HN: Why is the price of Bitcoin (and crypto in general) surging?
My impression has been that the value leaving the SEC-declared security shitcoins is not stopping at or in some cases even transiting via fiat, but is migrating to BTC and other large cap coins that have not yet been explicitly declared a security.

Many of the security shitcoins (MATIC, FIL, numerous others) suffered a single or double tap over the last couple days without the rebound that BTC, ETH and other unnamed coins have experienced.
