eigencoder··on PlayBook: A Programmable Paper Notebook [video]
I'm really interested in PlayBook and what Ink & Switch are doing. I wish more of their work was out in the open so it would be easier to try out.

sounds like you should go move there!
eigencoder··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Oh, yeah I get what you mean. I think I've seen the one you want, it might be CMD+arrow key.

These keyboard shortcuts are also used in emacs; I'm not sure if that's the source of their inclusion in MacOS or if they have a common ancestor between them.

What's the difference between "just after the most recent newline" and the start of the line?

eigencoder··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Yeah, I feel that in my bones. They've started down this road, and I don't know they'll be able to turn back.

Does ctrl+a not work for you? ctrl+a and ctrl+e work for me across every app I use on my Mac.
eigencoder··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Yeah, macOS is in a difficult position because some paradigms it's just had forever, and changing them would be unintuitive to established users even though they're not intuitive for a newcomer.

For me, I always felt like the dragging an app into a folder is pretty intuitive. I feel like it follows the unix "everything is a file" philosophy; installing is just putting the app file somewhere on your computer.

But everything else I pretty much agree with you.

I don't love it, I wish it was more handicapped
eigencoder··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Obviously all browsers rely on direction from the user. But they also typically rely on instructions from the browser maker's servers. Traditionally, you get all of those instructions in a single download that's been pre-packaged (the browser program itself). But if part of the browser's logic requires more computational resources than most consumers have, what's the problem with "outsourcing" that bit to Perplexity's servers?

As a consumer, I don't think it's very prudent to trust a company with that kind of access to your data, but it doesn't seem materially different from the kind of trust you have to give to Chrome.

eigencoder··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
I know it feels like they're different, but I think that at its core, they're the same.

When you say I am "manually controlling the site", that actually means I run a program on my computer that makes requests to the site, chooses how to display the content provided by the site, and then gives me control mechanisms (e.g. clicking, scrolling) to interact with that content.

An "agentic workflow" does the same thing. It's a computer program that I run that makes requests to the site, chooses how to display the content provided, and then gives me control mechanisms (e.g. typing text) to interact with the content.

I'm not trying to be pedantic here. I really think that the two aren't that different.

eigencoder··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
I think I get it. Like they'd have standing to sue if I tried to hack their website, or change the price of items or something.
eigencoder··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
What do you mean?
eigencoder··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Yeah, in this case I believe I do mean the merits rather than "standing".
eigencoder··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Really, what do you find different about it?
eigencoder··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
I'm naive on the law around this, but it seems like Amazon.com shouldn't have standing here. What Perplexity does, from my perspective, is essentially the same as when I allow Firefox, Chrome, or Safari (or any other browser software) to see my credentials and access Amazon's website on my behalf.
eigencoder··on How I Prompt
I find that this is pretty different from how I prompt. I feel like AI use for greenfield projects is different from long-established codebases.
eigencoder··on AI Is Breaking This Thing We Call Trust
Have you tried `pi`? What do you think of it?
eigencoder··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
I actually disagree, I think the problem is that heavy-handed companies have been dictating choices to us and our children, in contradiction to existing laws, and people are finally saying enough, these companies need to follow the laws.
eigencoder··on I Don't Have a Smartphone
I mean, that is the nature of marriage. You both shoulder burdens for each other
eigencoder··on The American Worker vs. the Most Qualified
I don't follow that "Most Qualified" would mean 95% of jobs going to foreigners. I get that the U.S. is 4-5% of the world's population, but if I live in San Antonio, Texas, the pool of plumbers for my house must also live in San Antonio, Texas, meaning that 99.9+% of the world is not remotely qualified for the job.

COVID was accidentally released from a lab.

That statement was censored as "objectively false", but our best information says it's probably true, and it was probably true then, too. Censorship is a dangerous walk. I totally agree with you that harmful misinformation is a problem, and that we have a duty of care. The problem is "who fact-checks the fact checkers?", and what happens when political leaders can request certain topics "fact checked".

Do you have children? Because I've never heard a parent think that way
eigencoder··on Adults over 65 will outnumber children by 2029
This is exactly what I was wondering, thank you! They kept saying 11 states already have this, but I couldn't figure out which 11.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here. I think that's a big reason why people want to ban bots.
