ehamberg··on We are 2 Italians, in Treasure Island, and we are launching CoffeeStrap.
Love the idea, but I miss Indonesian in the list of languages. :-)

Oh, and other have pointed out already: the gender symbols make very little sense.

ehamberg··on Opera moves to WebKit
https://twitter.com/SteveStreza/status/301725620172386304:

New hobby: Inspecting the source of blog posts complaining about Opera adopting WebKit and finding -webkit prefixes without -o equivalents.

ehamberg··on School of Haskell Goes Beta
Slightly off-topic: How much do you break down concepts when using Anki to learn a programming language? I use Anki for tonnes of stuff, but haven't used it for learning programming languages/APIs.
ehamberg··on Show HN: iOS app. Snooze this alarm clock and it will humiliate you on Facebook
Err... my brain was just malfunctioning. I meant to say 1 bit and 2 bits, not 2¹ and 2² bits. :-)
ehamberg··on Show HN: iOS app. Snooze this alarm clock and it will humiliate you on Facebook
I see. That will be confusing to non-americans to whom a 12-hour clock is far from standard. It's also seems a bit weird to have two checkboxes (= 4 bits of information) to choose between a 12-hour and 24-hour clock (2 bits). I guess only one can be checked at a time?

That said, however, what you probably should be doing is to respect the setting in iOS: http://i.imgur.com/kMQgw3m.png

Looks cool!

I'm really curious, though: What is the “Standard Clock” checkbox? (What is a standard clock?)

ehamberg··on Your Mac Keeps A Log Of Your Downloads
Hmm, it seems that the URL is taken from the database. If I delete the relevant row, the URL is no longer shown:

ehamberg··on Your Mac Keeps A Log Of Your Downloads
It does now:

    $ sqlite3 ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.QuarantineEventsV* 'select LSQuarantineAgentName from LSQuarantineEvent'|grep 'Google Chrome'|wc -l
          35
ehamberg··on Your Mac Keeps A Log Of Your Downloads
This is used to show where a program came from the first time you run it. For example, if I download iTerm 2 and then run it, I get the following warning:

ehamberg··on Apple expects Chinese sales 'to overtake US'
I would actually recommend visiting Shenzhen as well. I have been there a few times over the last five years and it's really interesting to see the rise of luxury items (fancy cars, expensive (real!) handbags and the token iPhone and iPad) in the city centre.

Shenzhen is even in China (though, in a special economic zone).

ehamberg··on Can filming one second of every day change your life? [video]
Heh, actually as a speaker of Norwegian, English and German, (written) Dutch is surprisingly easy to understand. I kept the app, at least for now. :-)
ehamberg··on Can filming one second of every day change your life? [video]
Really cool idea. The descriptions in iTunes are all in Dutch, though…

edit: actually, even the app itself is mostly in Dutch. :)

ehamberg··on My Science Tattoo: Why I did it, and what it means
Cool tattoo, but I'm quite sure the claims about the golden ratio being “all over” arts and nature are overblown. It's still a cool geometric concept, but as far as I know many of these “truths” are simply factoids stemming from confirmation bias.

Wikipedia has a brief list of some disputed observations here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio#Disputed_observati...

Err. Both of them lived and died in the last millennium.
ehamberg··on The Amazing iOS 6 Maps
It already has that, to some extent.

When you click somewhere, one of the options you get is “Report a Problem” which lets you say that something is missing or indicate where a point of interest _should_ be by placing a pin.

ehamberg··on My biggest problem with Vim
Look up text objects such as i" and a". They're great.

E.g:

- ci" (change inner double quote) will change (delete and put you in insert mode) the text between to double quotes.

- ca" (change _a_ double quote) will change the text and the surrounding double quotes.

There are text objects for quotes, brackets, sentences, blocks, etc. There are also plugins that create text objects such as arguments (to functions) in programming languages.

ehamberg··on My biggest problem with Vim
Since you specifically said “vi users”: The problem is most often – in my experience – that the plugins support only vi functionality, while Vim additions such as text objects are not supported. I love using Vim, but find vi really lacking.

ehamberg··on The real reason we’re upset about Sparrow’s acquisition
Perhaps something à la the KDE Free Qt Foundation? (http://www.kde.org/community/whatiskde/kdefreeqtfoundation.p...)

The agreement between the Free Qt Foundation and Nokia gives them right to release the latest Qt version under a BSD-style licence if Nokia stop releasing Qt versions (GPL+LGPL).

ehamberg··on Show HN: vi in your browser - edit files directly from Dropbox, etc
> I'm not sure it would be such a good idea to implement a hodgepodge of random peoples' mappings.

Ctrl-C is not a (user-defined) mapping. It will leave insert mode, but will not trigger things like abbreviations and autocommands (in Vim), so it's not a good idea to use it over Ctrl-[ (which is supported) or <esc>.

ehamberg··on Govt of India proposes to ban SSH (Or wants you to use 40 bit keys)
This reminds me of ~10 years ago, when downloading Linux distros, they came in “US” and “non-US” flavours. I vaguely remember this having to do with “exporting” crypto from the US. I guess something has changed since I no longer see this, but I would love if someone could shed some light on that piece of Internet history.
