eh78ssxv2f··on How Google Chrome’s ad blocker works
I am confused. Are they doing (i) EasyList + EasyPrivacy OR (ii) List derived using better ads standard?

I would imagine (i) to be much longer than (ii).

eh78ssxv2f··on When your manager isn't supporting you, develop a manager crew
> and deal with the social problems that entails

Can somebody explain a bit on what social problems can women expect in US for not changing names?

eh78ssxv2f··on A Message to Our Customers about iPhone Batteries and Performance
I think the question is:

"Hey you're battery is going bad. Do you want to [keep the performance] or [shutdown the phone]?"

eh78ssxv2f··on The Echo Dot was the best-selling product on Amazon this holiday season
Isn't it different though?

Publishing YouTube app on Windows Phone requires Google to put extra effort into developing an app for a completely new platform which I assume requires lot of engineering effort.

Selling Chromecast on Amazon probably does not cost Amazon any extra engineering effort. So, I do not believe that the two situations are equivalent.

Can somebody explain why RW was not read her Miranda rights? Was it because she was never placed in custody?
eh78ssxv2f··on Release Notes for Safari Technology Preview 46
Can somebody explain how it helps with the privacy?

Assuming most of the users of the browser are on the latest version, it implies that majority of users are already sharing the same useragent. How does useragent version # helps with reducing the fingerprint?

eh78ssxv2f··on Uber Accused of Espionage, Bribery, Hacking, in Former Employee's Letter
May be I am being too naive, but can somebody answer two questions for me here (note: I have no personal relationship with Uber or Lyft except that I like ride sharing services more than traditional taxis):

(1) Taxi industry has been using medallion system to create artificial scarcity and scam passengers by providing low quality service at higher prices. And, this scam has been running with the help of local politicians at false pretexts (too many taxis ruin the look and appeal of the city etc.). What exactly are Uber's options in a city where the scam is supported by politicians?

(2) I personally know a lot of cities where Uber sued or used other means to force the local politicians to open up the city for ride sharing services. This benefited not only Uber, but other ride sharing companies too such as Lyft. If we believe that Uber used unethical means to get in many of the cities, what ethical responsibilities do we expect from Lyft? Should Lyft stay away from these cities or is it ethical for them to take a dip in these unethical gains provided by Uber?

eh78ssxv2f··on G.M. Unveils Its Driverless Cars, Aiming to Lead the Pack
1 mistake in 109 years does not seem too bad. Is there data to compare with other auto manufacturers?
eh78ssxv2f··on Facebook’s New Captcha Test: 'Upload a Clear Photo of Your Face'
> - It sets a precedent for uploading nude photos to FB and for them asking for it.

umm, no. If I understand correctly, the user believes that their nude may end up on FB. The user takes initiative to upload their copy of the nude to FB to prove ownership or damages.

eh78ssxv2f··on Universities are also to blame for the GOP’s ‘grad student tax’
> In reality, they should "award" grad students $0 in tuition and pay them like what they are - employees (and deeply exploited employees at that!).

It's not always the university paying the tution fee. If the PhD student is a teaching assistant, it might be the department. If the student is research assistant, it might be the NIH or whoever is funding the project. This could be public or private (e.g., Google Faculty research awards).

I seriously doubt that in any of these cases, university would be able to claim $50k as gift since the university actually received tuition fee from the student although paid by someone else.

eh78ssxv2f··on Google collects cell tower info even if location services are disabled
Is there a reason to believe that mobile ecosystem is more unsafe than the desktop ecosystem?

I would argue it the other way round. On mobile (Android or iOS), apps have much fewer permissions compared to on desktop. e.g., one app can't look into the data of the other app. On desktop, it is possible to write a binary which steals user cookies (e.g., https://github.com/rash2kool/cookie_stealer). For all purposes, the binary would be legitimate, and no antivirus or OS APIs would mark the binary as bad.

However, on mobile, one app can't peek into the private data of the other app. So, the Uber app can't peek into my browser cookies.

eh78ssxv2f··on Man to launch himself in homemade rocket to prove Earth is flat (not the Onion)
But the retina is curved too, so I am not sure there is even a way to convince flat-earthers?
eh78ssxv2f··on Comparing Browser Page Load Time: An Introduction to Methodology
Great work. But, I wonder if is this is just a case of different browsers focusing on different metrics? Chrome seems to have shifted its focus on paint timing metrics [1], while Mozilla is optimizing load timing metrics.

Personally, I feel optimizing both metrics are important. It would be nice if this study had also published a comparison of paint timing metrics.

eh78ssxv2f··on The Effect of Cold Showering on Health and Work: A Randomized Controlled Trial
I am not sure how much clothes would help in preventing hypothermia.
eh78ssxv2f··on Facebook apologizes after wrong translation sees Palestinian man arrested
I think it is 99% police. I do not use FB translate, but Google translate. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. I expect that it is not 100% reliable, and anybody who frequently uses the automated translation tools for critical tasks (presumably the police in this case) should know this. My suspicion is that this was just an excuse for the police to arrest somebody.
eh78ssxv2f··on Google and the Resurgence of Italian Design
> What's the problem for manufacturers to add such a padding layer?

Customization! Users can customize the color of the padding layer. Personally, I do not see any advantage of phone manufacturers providing it over users buying it from third party manufacturers. Most of the shops (in US at least) would also stock the cases along with the phones.

> I want it to stand a decent chance of not breaking when it hits something. Very simple. Get a case.

eh78ssxv2f··on How Booking.com manipulates users
> Just ask TicketMaster.

TM has been doing pretty well in terms of stock price (not the user happiness) -- probably the metric that they care about. So, I am not sure if that's the best example.

eh78ssxv2f··on W3C abandons consensus, standardizes DRM, EFF resigns
Can somebody explain what exactly is happening here? What were the pros/cons of the move? e.g., it is possible that browsers are in a tight spot: If they fail to provide certain functionality, then content providers just move to native apps. Was that the tradeoff here?
eh78ssxv2f··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack

eh78ssxv2f··on The End of ProTube 2
> How many people that uploaded content want to prevent others from privately enjoying it?

I thought it was possible for uploaded to turn off the monetization, and then ads won't be shown on that video.

eh78ssxv2f··on Homeowners faced an Airbnb nightmare as renters left them facing huge fines
So, it seems that regulations governing the relationship between the landlord and tenants is the real problem here. If it was easier to recover money from the tenants, and kick them off the property, this would not be a problem.
eh78ssxv2f··on Free Data Recovery of Wet Phones and Hard Drives for Hurricane Harvey Victims
This is definitely a great gesture, and will probably require a lot of labor on their part. I wonder why they did not restrict it to households with income below a certain level? That way they would have received both the positive publicity as well as reduced the free labor they need to provide.
eh78ssxv2f··on Juicero Is Shutting Down
> Just carry a dongle

The problem is nobody wants to carry a dongle. Also, localizing the dongle inside the house is not as straightforward. Would the users need to put one dongle-detector in each room? one near each exit? If it has long transmission range, then it would probably be big/heavy due to larger batteries.

eh78ssxv2f··on Juicero Is Shutting Down
> I wouldn't want to have my oven on when I am not home- it might just be me but it seems dangerous to leave a hot oven unattended.

Well, then you are in the market for an IoT oven that is connected to your phone and car. A device that can continuously track your phone and car location, and turn off the networked oven if you are outside the house.

eh78ssxv2f··on James Damore has an above decent chance of winning his legal case against Google
> The situation now is that even if a man qualifies better than a woman for a job, they would choose a woman for boosting the numbers.

How did you conclude that? May be they are just making the work environment more suitable for women? May be more women are applying to your workplace? How did you conclude that the women engineers coming in are less qualified than men?

eh78ssxv2f··on Redesigning the airport boarding pass (2010)
credit card? driving license?
eh78ssxv2f··on Redesigning the airport boarding pass (2010)
In US, gate information is printed on the boarding pass but is subject to change. In practice, it probably changes 5% of time.
eh78ssxv2f··on Airport lounges will let anyone in, provided you can fake a QR code (2016)
> Sitting in an airport lounge you shouldn't have access to isn't stealing.

What do you think of random people occupying your house while you are gone out to work or grocery store? Is that okay too?

> Using ad blockers on a site that supports itself through ads isn't stealing.

I agree with this because browsers are "user agents" not "website agents".

eh78ssxv2f··on Redfin shares surge more than 30% in $138.5M real estate tech IPO
IMO, one reason behind that is that the actual agents charge 3% no matter the absolute cost of the house. This does not make much sense since buying a 100k house sometimes involves as much work (if not more) as buying a 3M house.

As such, it is better for Redfin to operate in the markets where house prices are higher since the absolute amount of money they can save is also higher in these markets.
