maybe there are other factors at play here; who knows how long would they live if they didn't live near traffic.
egman_ekki··on How to find a street in 2 minutes [video]
I think Google Maps is doing something similar where it sometimes asks you to take photos/a video of the street you’re walking on to detrmine your location more precisely (I think it happens when the GPS is not giving good enough precision).
egman_ekki··on The 30-year mortgage is an intrinsically toxic product (2018)
This up conversion can still make sense even if the interest rates don’t go down as with the 800k/5% mortgage, a larger portion of your monthly payment is made up of interest, thus also your tax bonus is higher and in net terms you can end up ahead even in time horizon of 20+ years before the down conversion.

Isn’t the rent going to go up over 30 years? My guess at least inflation adjusted?

Don’t store it in the fridge anymore, but using these and they are pretty good: https://www.mambaby.com/p/feel-good-260ml-forest-glass-baby-...

I’ve switched to glass bottles for my daughter pretty early on, but most of the bottles used for breast milk pumps are plastic (e.g. https://www.medela.com/breastfeeding/products/collecting/sto...), and are supposed to be boiled after each use for disinfection. I really wonder how durable they are and how much microplastic ends up in that breastmilk…

People should check car prices in Denmark and then they wouldn’t feel so bad about prices in the US.

egman_ekki··on ChatGPT can now call Wolfram Alpha
I think he might actually be onto something here. If you saw Wolfram use WolframAlpha, he’s very good at it, but you kinda need to know what it knows and how to ask for it to be smooth and useful. If this initial hurdle gets removed, this power could enable the usage of WolframAlpha by many more people. And honestly it’s a very powerful combo.

> Smartphone cameras work pretty well outdoors where there is enough light. DSLR and mirroless are hard to beat indoors in low light conditions.

I was sightseeing in the night and had my Nikon D7100 (crop sensor) with a good lens (up to f/1.8 iirc) and Samsung Galaxy S8+. After the first few shots, I put the dslr back to my backpack, the photos from the phone were much better. And that’s a pretty old smartphone!

I know newer Sonys have crazy ISO, also own a fullframe, but it’s just so easy to mess some setting up and end up with crappy photo from a dslr in those challenging conditions, and I’m no beginner when it comes to dslrs.

egman_ekki··on If you're so good, why aren't you making 600k at BigTech?
yeah, but they added fees on top, so it was never like your principal was going down without paying installments. Now the interest rates are back to 5%, and 6% might come soon.

The best period was last year when mortgages were already around 4% (because they’re driven by the free market and what was happening in the US) and on top of that you had negative interest on your bank account, because Danish National’s bank interest rate was negative, so banked passed off the costs to customers. The negative interest rate also didn’t help when the inflation was going up quite quickly.

Having a small kid also got me wondering how chimps cope with the same problems. I mean they’re 98% similar to us, so the babies must go through very similar stages…
egman_ekki··on Apple HomePod 2nd Generation
Slightly different product, but there's a wireless quad speaker system from Sony (HT-A9) that even supports adding a wireless subwoofer that probably provides a much better cinematic experience with full immersion (review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHcjvdGbaa0).

egman_ekki··on No one wants to have kids anymore
Why would a/the state wanted babies? The most rational thing to want is educated proffessionals from lower cost countries (so you can lowball them more easily) who pay their taxes and stay until retirement, and then they can be sent where they came from for retirement. Minimum social and education costs, maximum tax income, lower costs of doing business for local population who would still be mostly in charge of local companies.

egman_ekki··on Being OK with not being extraordinary (2021)
It's not the luck that makes me sad. I think those people had extraordinary insight into how world works. Things that I consider difficult or problems that would take me months to solve (or I wouldn't be able to do that at all) would take them minutes on the back of a napkin.
