efm··on Leap Spins out of YC
I attempted to sign up a long time ago, when the only authentication was through FB, which I don't have. So, the email address is in your system but I'm not a member. I cannot sign in or up. Is this something you can fix? I would contact you directly for support.
efm··on The Math Behind Project Scheduling, Bug Tracking, and Triage [video]
Critical Path Method + Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). Figure out the shortest path to the goal (critical path) then figure out the most likely timeline, by applying a probability distribution to the weights of each connection. This highlights the truth that reducing variance is a huge factor in improving the quality of forecasts.

efm··on The IRS’s Effort to Convert Its Assembly Codebase to Java
I saw a presentation from one of the people from the local office. Her advice seemed reasonable: Go to the procurement conferences, get a one-pager of the capabilities of your firm, and talk to the purchasing agents. See government contracting as a supplement to your business revenue, not the core.
efm··on The IRS’s Effort to Convert Its Assembly Codebase to Java
There are Procurement Technical Assistance centers in every region of the country. They are staffed by former procurement officers, and help companies learn how to sell to government and prime contractors.

efm··on Show HN: The best time to visit any city
I'd prefer not to have an app to find rare species. They're rare for a reason, and that reason is because there are few places the can live, and those places are likely difficult for people to get to. Please don't make it easier for people to get there.

efm··on A Solution of the P versus NP Problem?
tl;dr Not crackpot, not proven, interesting math. There's a discussion on Google+ started by John Baez, which includes a comment by Gowers: https://plus.google.com/+johncbaez999/posts/hGshTfdimpZ

There's some interesting ideas in the paper, the researcher has done good work in this area before.

The advice is more specific than "Be prolific". It's "Be prolific within constraints." The former is the error of switching before you get to fluency (getting of the bus too soon).
efm··on Ask HN: How to prepare for an Engineering Manager interview?
Read _Behind Closed Doors The Secret of Great Management_ by Johanna Rothman and Esther Derby.

Look for opportunities to do supervision. Non-profits are always looking for help, and it makes you look well rounded on your resume. There's no substitute for doing to learn how to manage.
