Im sure from Microsoft's POV is that they are charging you for maintaining and operating co-pilot (servers, admin, etc), not charging you for the tool itself.
eezurr··on S.F. population fell 6.3%, most in nation, to lowest level since 2010
The main reason they do it, IIRC, is because the banks handing out the landlords loans require some minimum rent prices on the leases in the loan contracts. The way they get around this is by offering a month or three of free rent. That way the leases signed by the tenants still me the contractual obligations of the bank.

In the end the tenant still gets screwed when the lease comes up to be renewed, unless they are willing to move out over negotiating another free month in the next cycle.

I'm not sure, I was quoting the article in my first paragraph.
eezurr··on The Life of a Backpacker in Asia in the 1970s (2018)
Modernization makes warfare orders of magnitude more efficient, wouldn't you agree?

More people have suffered and died in modern warfare than any other wars because its that much easier to harm and kill people at scale.

That's my cherry picked argument vs yours.

eezurr··on The Life of a Backpacker in Asia in the 1970s (2018)
>In every culture the native costume is the first thing to go, native architecture is next. Food is one of the last to go, even in modern places where people are wearing blue jeans. So these days I like to go to places where there is still native costume and native architecture. Unfortunately these areas are shrinking. I'm not nostalgic about it; I understand the reasons behind the changes, and it's a net improvement, but someday they will be gone and I want to capture them.

And with that comes the expansion/availability of flavored sugar water and cigarettes at their local corner shop, and the dissolution of community trust.

Im beginning to question if modernization is the right choice for everyone (or anyone).

Some hard evidence is diet changes negatively affecting certain groups of people (e.g. Aboriginals, possibly African Americans). Some groups' metabolisms have a really difficult time handling wheat and/or sugar, leading to obesity.

Softer evidence includes general happiness (which is an important metric when considering which life is "better"). It's a meme, and a truth, that simpler people in Africa are happier than us modernized folk. Its not often you meet a modern man that is present, undistracted, and unwanting.

The curse for unmodernized societies today is the communication available to the outside world. Humans are cursed to be discontent once they find out there are better options available.

This is true for every recession, so maybe rethink your friends logic.

eezurr··on Deletionpedia: Rescuing articles from Wikipedia's deletionism
Interesting that you've had problems with someone with that many sources/public image.

My project has stalled, but there was a point when I was putting together a Wikipedia page for notable composers of the 20th and 21st century. I came up with some criteria that would filter out most of the composers listed on their respective "list of 20th century composers" and "list of 21st century composers". If you haven't seen these lists, they are HUGE and thus pretty useless IMO.

I started going through each composer and so many of them were unknown, barely sourced/dead sources, no website, no music online, recently graduated college, etc.

I flagged a handful of pages and all of them were rejected for deletion. Sometimes the page creators popped out of the blue and fought me on it (and got to vote on the page remaining). I think someone of them had direct connections with the composer.

There are so many tiny pages dedicated to forever-invisible composers, it's awful.

You can see my progress here:

eezurr··on How I Arrived at Sun as Employee #8
For me, I imagine part of the excitement is applying the art of computer science every day at your job back then. When things are taken care of for you, they become boring. Not because those things are inherently boring, but they're boring because you're no longer thinking about them. You can't get excited about things you aren't thinking about. Many jobs transitioned from surgeons with scalpels to supergluing prefab parts together. Which one sounds more exciting to you? I'd rather be a surgeon.
eezurr··on Ask HN: Is there a video game dev alternative to HN?
Thanks, I've tried a handful of game dev. discords. They are not designed to collect and organize information though, and keeping up with chats is a huge chore.
eezurr··on Ask HN: Why is visual programming so popular for game programming?
If you want a hands on answer OP, download Blender and follow the donut tutorial on YouTube. As a software engineer with 10+ years of experience, the geometry nodes in Blender just make sense[1]. The comparison here is your are creating a 3D object from scratch, just like a game designer would create a 3D scene from scratch.

eezurr··on Ask HN: Beating depression with or without anti-depressants?
Hey jpgvm, I've had depression ever since I hit puberty; and before, during, and after that: social anxiety. I've avoided anti-depressants for the first ~30+ years of my life. Eventually I decided I needed to try something, but wasn't ready for SSRI's and the bimodal data behind it.

So about a year ago I decided to try St. John's Wort, which you can purchase without a prescription (in the USA). It can help manage mild-moderate depression per the literature, and per my experience. It took six weeks before I felt a difference, and since then the part of me that wants to lay in bed and shut out the world, or distract myself through hours of living through other people's lives (reddit, HN, twitch, etc) has 'grown up'. I've only had couple days over the last year where the old me threw its weight onto my back, but the next day I was back to normal.

St. John's Wort doesn't come without caveats. You need take your dosage 3 times a day (with each meal). If you don't, you'll likely wont be able to drink alcohol for awhile (stomachaches), and the wort may be less effective. It also interacts negatively with a lot of other drugs (check online).

I take 300mg extract (0.3% Hypericins) 3 times a day.

Another issue I've had is bad blocks forming on my SSD drive. I thought I lost a bunch of photographs (nothing important thankfully, just amateur shots when I first got my hands on a camera), but searching around I discovered CHKDSK. 4 hours later and everything was back to normal.

My OS (Win10) is on the same SSD. When I made the decision to get a 1 TB SSD for the OS and media storage, deep down a voice whispered [dont do that]. That decision has come to haunt me 1 year (!) later. I used to use 128 or 256 GB SSDs for the OS and keep all my media on another HDD drive (which failed after 10 years).

Also: 1 TB discs:

eezurr··on L.A. judge rules LGBT corporate diversity law unconstitutional
I have an honest question.. regardless of your gender, sexuality, or race; if you are a competitive person and want to work your way up the corporate ladder to lead, how would you feel if this law (and others like it) existed and "othered"[1] you? If you know the amount of work it takes to get that position, yet instead you're brought in to fulfill some quota, would you be satisfied with that?

I'm asking the people who want to lead based from their hard work and experience. Personally, I'm not sure such a disingenuous existence would sit right with me. I also could not imagine walking into work every day mutually sharing the knowledge my presence in the room is to fill a quota. That seems incredibly dehumanizing. I'm sure some people will disagree, and some people take advantage of what they can. But I'm talking about the day to day existence.

I dont need to read reality counter-arguments, I know they exist. I know how unfair the world is. This is a question for the individual.

Hotels have solved this problem. Each brand more or less offers the same quality across the US. You only need to see a few photos to know what options you have. Most of the rooms are the same design, same furniture. And its common for them to have desks and computer chairs. Consistency.

Why are you still using airbnb?

eezurr··on Global music market grew by 18.5% in 2021, driven by paid subscription streaming
I would be interested to hear your non-editorialized argument without the symbolism.

YouTube is a precursor to TikTok and for the most part offers the same functionality (organizing and distributing media to billions of people). YouTube has existed for 17 years and is not lacking in uploads by talented musicians, singers, and bands. Since the two companies are not that different and both serve billions of people, there's already 17 years of proof against your argument. Also, Justin Bieber would not exist without the record labels. He very likely would have faded out of the consciousness of the masses a few years after his e-fame.

>The music industry is growing because independent musicians are finally figuring out how to navigate it without any need for those traditional industry services.

Uploading music to YouTube or TikTok is not "navigating" the industry. As easy as it is to upload content, it's just as easy to be forgotten. There's countless other people competing for eyeballs on those platforms.

The record labels provide administrative resources, recording/audio engineering, distribution/merchandise, legal, booking/touring, management, public relations, industry contacts, and probably more. Tackling that workload (if popular) without outside support does not seem possible.

Also, the record labels exist to serve the masses. They always have, and always will. I don't see a huge demand for the style of music independent artists create. If there was such a demand, the record labels would capture it. They exist to make a profit, and aren't dumb. They don't hold the little guy back, it's the little guy who doesn't understand they are competing in a (wrong) market that isn't interested in their product.

I grew up hating the RIAA. I used to spend time reading articles about how awful the RIAA was as a budding musician. Now that I'm older, I'm sad to see what they represent disappear. They were the foundation that the pinnacle of American culture was built off of in the 60s-90s. Their gate offered quality at the cost of quantity. What's happening now, IMO, is that the market is dividing more and more every year. More bands that fulfill the needs of fewer people. This trend is not sustainable in the long run, especially for the musicians.

There's a term for that type of thinking: "crab mentality". It's named after the behavior of crabs when they are placed in a bucket. When a crab tries to escape, the other crabs notice and begin pulling the escaping crab back into the bucket.

For us humans, when we manage to climb out of a bucket we land in a larger bucket that contains the one we climbed out of. Eventually we get our bearings and begin to see the new walls that surround us. Unhappy with the walls, we start climbing again. And so goes the story of Sysiphus.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sisyphus

I think the solution is to be happy with what you have. Not an easy task though.

eezurr··on How Does This End?
Yet the United States have tortured POWs, arguably worse than murder for the immense suffering that causes both physically and psychologically.

>There’s rarely a single person you can hold accountable for embodying our bad ideas and behaviors.

Which is much more dangerous than being able to place responsibly on a non-amorphous, single person. The US has an extensively long history of interfering in the matters of other countries. You can overthrow and point fingers at one figure head, but you can't overthrow a system, systemic, and systematically unaccountable foreign policy that changes face every 4-8 years.

eezurr··on How Does This End?
I've been seeing the word "propaganda" thrown around a lot lately. It's been bothering me how quickly people stop seeking the full picture when they start using that word. That is a really vulnerable position to place your intelligence and curiosity.

Propaganda: Propaganda is communication that is primarily used to influence an audience and further an agenda which may not be objective and may be selectively presenting facts to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, or using loaded language to produce an emotional rather than a rational response to the information that is being presented. - from Wikipedia

Question: How can you determine when an individual is under the influence of propaganda?

Answer: When they stop looking for the truths that either or both sides of a conflict use as the foundation of their propaganda.

>Putin’s propaganda is WILDLY effective.

I'd argue so is the United States, much more so than Putin's. If you compare the evils committed by the US to Putin's, Putin cannot hold a candle to the US. The difference is that Putin bears that burden across multiple decades, while the US changes figure heads every 4-8 years, and with that washes away the stains of the country into the haze of time.

With all that being said, I am not pro-Putin nor pro-US regarding this conflict, and I agree with the article that the best course is for the United States to admit defeat, (and additionally, not in the article) stop expanding eastward (through NATO), and to keep their promise to Russia (which was to stop expanding NATO).

Edit: I'd like to add, the seed of Putin's "fascist/nazi" claim is that in 2014, Ukraine's new government eliminated minority rights (i.e. the Russian minority, which represents less than half of the population). And, the US started funding the neo-Nazi faction (Azov battalion) of the Ukrainian army. A quick duckduckgo search will pull up articles for both of these claims.
