eemil··on EU plans to force OEMs to use a common charger for all phones
I don't get it.

Apple went all-in with USB-C on their computers (starting 5 years ago with the macbook pro). And that was a pretty unpopular decision at the time.

Now that the mobile phone industry has standardized on USB-C, they want to stick with lightning? Are they doing it just to be contrarian?

eemil··on Helm is a personal server that lives where you do
To be fair, the subscription also means that the company is more likely to stay around and keep their products working.

Given that your paying Helm to handle all the PITA aspects of home servers, it seems reasonable to me. This is coming from someone who runs their own home infra in proxmox.

My only concern is the lack of offline backups. You should be able to backup to an external hard drive, and decrypt these backups (e.g. for migration to a "real" server) completely offline, without depending on support.

eemil··on Ask HN: Best HVAC system for a new house?
FWIW, I live in a pretty cold climate (dips below -30C every year) where a lot of people do use heat pumps. They just lose efficiency at low temps and have to rely on resistive heating.

AC is not very common, so that might play a factor. The efficiency loss is more acceptable if it means you can get some cooling in the summer.

eemil··on I Just Bought a Bank – Yotta YC S20
Perhaps you can clear this up? I still don't understand how Yotta bank intends to earn money. Not just to stay afloat, but also pay for the unprecedented interest rates of its savings accounts. Seems like another growth now, profit later/never venture to me. I wouldn't place my trust, let alone money (even if it's insured) in such an establishment.
eemil··on Windows XP source code has leaked
In what jurisdiction?
eemil··on The ThinkPad TrackPoint tried to build a better mouse
For mobile computing, there's no comparison IMO. With a touchpad, you have to shuffle your hands to the palmrest area to move the mouse. If your machine is on your lap, that might put your hands in a quite unergonomic position. And it of course interrupts keyboard input. And there's the subject of accidental inputs when typing.
eemil··on Not a Wheelchair [video]
One drawback that I haven't seen mentioned yet, is single-wheel torque. If you look at the video, there is a pretty sizeable motor that's even geared down with a sprocket an chain. So there is a lot of torque and power available, and due to the solid axle, you can send it to a single wheel. This might be important in off-roading situations.

With direct drive motors, you have to make a pretty big compromise somewhere:

* Two smaller motors (same total power): drastically less torque per wheel

* Two larger motors (>2x total power): somewhat less torque per wheel (still don't have gearing!), cost, weight

If you're adamant on avoiding the solid axle, I think a good-ish solution might be hub motors on all four corners. That way you're far less likely to depend on a single wheel to get you moving.

Or alternatively, a locking diff in the rear (forget about LSDs). They usually provide some gear reduction, so you can skip the chain and drive it directly with the electric motor.

In short, the solid axle is a really good choice that you would be hard pressed to replace, without making a sizeable compromise somewhere.

eemil··on The Intel Comet Lake Core i9-10900K, i7-10700K, i5-10500K CPU Review
With Intel's track record, I would expect nothing less.
eemil··on The World's Longest Alphabetical Email Address (2004)
I do this on G Suite with a single license.
eemil··on French court rules Steam games must be able to be resold
What you're missing, is that Steam's heavily discounted sales exist because the games cannot be resold. Just compare Steam to the market for new/used console games.

That is to say, the situation you're describing should never exist -- games will be either cheap (current situation) or more expensive with a secondary used market.

eemil··on Effects of Intermittent Fasting on Health, Aging, and Disease [pdf]
Try adding a pinch of salt, it'll reduce the bitterness of black coffee.
eemil··on Apple Mac Pro Available to Buy
My mistake.. maybe I assumed because of that 1.5 TB memory capacity.
eemil··on Apple Mac Pro Available to Buy
You can't really compare that build to a mac pro. On the low end, you're mostly paying for the platform:

  - Full-sized, machined metal case
  - *Huge*, complex, dual-socket Xeon motherboard
   - 12 memory slots, 6 memory channels
   - "MPX" slots
   - Custom video acceleration card support
   - Dual 10 GBit Ethernet, Thunderbolt
   - A lot more PCI-e lanes
  - 1.4 kW power supply + cooling capacity
eemil··on Ten-Hour Time-Restricted Eating Benefits Patients with Metabolic Syndrome
> Typically, people would go for an 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. eating window

This is something I don't get. After sleeping 8h, you're in a fasted state, having done the "hard part" that is not eating for several hours. So breakfast/lunch should be the easiest meals to skip.

eemil··on We Need to Dream Bigger Than Bike Lanes
>"You're taking away parking space!" "All these bike lanes are slowing traffic"

Those points probably don't even matter. Each bicycling convert means one less parking space used, and one less car sitting in traffic.

eemil··on Why office workers can't sleep and why that's bad
SunsetScreen is good if you live at an extreme latitude. Don't know if this has been addressed in recent updates, last time I used flux it wanted to start dimming my screen at 18.00 in the winter and close to midnight in the summer.

At the time, f.lux's devs seemed completely opposed to any kind of adjustable schedule for people who cannot follow the sun.

eemil··on Raising Prices Is Hard
Maybe it's just me, but it always seems like a cash grab whenever a company updates its prices and allows customers to prepay x amount for the old price. Why not offer a discount, or coupon code instead? Not saying that I disagree with the price increase, just that specific method of rewarding existing customers.
eemil··on We called a secret MI6 phone number (2013)
True. I'm guessing there's some unknown circumstance that makes the ease-of-access benefit outweigh any security risks.

It wouldn't surprise me if the number was leaked on purpose. To get people calling the station, to obfuscate the message's actual recipients.

eemil··on Zen 2 Missives – AMD now delivering efficiencies that are double that of Intel
I think this is more a problem to do with motherboard manufacturers than AMD. The manufacturers decide which boards get a Ryzen 3000 stamp of approval, and BIOS support. Though maybe AMD should have been more stringent about their motherboard requirements regarding forwards compatibility with Ryzen 3000.

Even if there were more serious issues, I would argue that AMD did the right thing keeping the AM4 socket. Since this varies from board to board, it's obviously not a deficit of the socket itself. At the end of the day, nobody is forcing you to keep your old motherboard. You just have the option to. If you can save 25% by not buying a new motherboard, it probably justifies a small performance deficit.

eemil··on Zen 2 Missives – AMD now delivering efficiencies that are double that of Intel
Maybe I'm missing something, but PCIe Gen4 does seem like a big deal since it's effectively doubling the data rate of the previous gen. Meaning, once all/most of your peripherals are PCIe 4 compatible, you'll theoretically have double the PCIe lanes, on account of only needing half as many.

One immediate benefit that comes to mind, is storage controllers. With 8x spinning disks, you might get away with using a single lane which can provide almost 2 GByte/s bandwidth. And controllers previously using 8xGen3 lanes could switch to 4xGen4 without any loss in performance.

eemil··on Tasty Seaweed Reduces Cows’ Methane Emissions by 99%
That's obviously the most elegant, best solution. But the time for such is long past. It's clear that humanity will not stop consuming, and expecting endless growth. At least for a few generations. In the short term, we need any win we can get, even if there are risks.
eemil··on My Home Lab Server with 20 Cores / 40 Threads and 128 GB Memory
This is exactly what I will be doing next month. Moving into a house with electric heating, so I'll leave my desktop and home server on to mine cryptocurrency most of the time. Since the electricity will be effectively "free", I can make some profit. And since I can also deduct electricity used from taxed income (in my jurisdiction, "expenses for the production of income") that should in itself reduce heating costs around 25-30%.
eemil··on What I Know About Being Sick at Work (2018)
What you're saying is a bit misleading.

Headphones do not inherently damage hearing. What's damaging, is listening to them at a high volume. This might occur if you're in a noisy environment, and use headphones with poor isolation, e.g. airpods, which need to overpower the ambient noise.

You can absolutely listen to headphones all day, in a quiet environment or if they provide good isolation.

eemil··on Why Three Prongs? (1996)
So much misinformation in this thread. Voltage, current, and resistance are physical properties entirely dependent on each other -- increasing one affects the value of others. That's like saying that the mass of bullets kills people, without any regard for velocity.

A 12 V car battery can kill you, if it has a low-resistance path that goes through your heart. Touching the terminals will do nothing. Maybe if you applied that voltage to conductive spikes inserted into specific points of the body, there would be some effect.

A voltage source, like a car battery, does not determine how much current passes through a circuit. That is determined by the circuit's resistance, and the source's upper limits (i.e. internal resistance for batteries, rated current for power supplies).

As voltage increases, so does current. High-voltage supplies will absolutely kill you, as long as they're able to supply the required current. Which, to harm a human heart, is quite low (tens to hundreds of milliamps). Aside from fringe sources like static electricity and tasers, most HV sources are entirely capable.

eemil··on Electric cars 'will not solve transport problem,' report warns
Though I'm a big proponent of pure electric vehicles, we should be acknowledging that they're still a large source of carbon emissions from manufacturing and in some cases electricity used. The most desirable option would be to move away from individually owned automobiles altogether.

E-bikes are the way to go. They fill the gap between bike-able distances and those requiring alternate propulsion for many people. And depending on your diet, they're in some cases more environmentally friendly than normal bicycles per distance traveled. That doesn't even matter, since both are an order of magnitude better than the automobile.

It's crazy that we're spending thousands to subsidize electric vehicles and mostly ignoring e-bikes.

eemil··on Riichi Mahjong Strategy Books
The amount of luck involved definitely helps with casual play. You can face much stronger players without being completely obliterated. But that also means, for tournament play, that you need a sufficient number of games for statistically better players to come out on top. So tournaments typically last 2–3 days, totaling 8–12 90 minute games.
eemil··on Raspberry Pi 4
You can get industrial microSD cards for not that much money. Mouser has a couple models with MLC flash for under 20 EUR. E.g. SDSDQAF3-016G-XI
eemil··on Raspberry Pi 4
I agree. No idea why they went with micro-hdmi, when mini displayport is more robust, more common, and royalty-free.
eemil··on Intel Core I7-1065G7, 10nm Ice Lake CPU Surpasses AMD 3rd Gen Ryzen
Not to mention, that this is a single benchmark from an unknown source. Without knowing what system the benchmark was run on, I would hesitate to draw any conclusions. Thermal performance matter a lot with modern CPU's -- better cooling will allow the CPU to maintain a higher clock for longer. So the i7-1065G7's performance may in fact be lower in a 15w TDP laptop.
eemil··on New Mac Pro
Compared to a Mac Pro, you'll be giving up

* Desktop-grade cooling

* Multithreaded CPU performance (4-6 vs 8-28 cores)

* PCI-e lanes + expandability (via PCI-e slot)

* RAM expandable to 1.5 TB

* dual 10 GBit ethernet

Not all "pros" have the same requirements. In your case, maybe the Mac Mini is adequate.
