edwinjm··on Dutch suicide prevention website shares data with tech companies without consent
It’s “just” a major corporation collecting very personal data.
edwinjm··on Dutch suicide prevention website shares data with tech companies without consent
Europe has laws against misuse of data from visitors, so it’s generally safe to visit such websites.

The fact that this is on hackernews means this case is the exception, not the rule.

edwinjm··on Modern Front end Complexity: essential or accidental?
The article started with showing how complex the frontend is. And then moves the complexity to the backend, with tools that aren’t well supported and putting extra load on the server. For some applications, this is a good solution, for most, however, it’s not.

Haven’t you heard about Codex?
edwinjm··on Figma's woes compound with Claude Design
Don’t forget Pencil, another “Figma killer”. Free (for now). https://trypencil.com/
edwinjm··on Migrating from DigitalOcean to Hetzner
You buy your fake ids at the grocery store?
edwinjm··on Migrating from DigitalOcean to Hetzner
Then pay it again and sort it out after. There’s a time to be right and there’s a time to be pragmatic.
edwinjm··on An AI Vibe Coding Horror Story
It is related to CI and dev practices etc. A experienced developer using AI would add security/data protection, even when vibe coding.
edwinjm··on European AI. A playbook to own it
If they want to improve but find that European regulations are the main obstacle, it makes sense they focus on that.
edwinjm··on Chrome DevTools MCP (2025)
MCP is dead? Which cli tool should we use to instruct Chrome to open a page and click the Open button? And to read what appears in the console after clicking?

MCP permanently sacrifice a chunk of the context window? And a skill for you cli is free?

edwinjm··on Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025)
Big businesses and government want SLAs, courses for employee’s and a helpdesk they can call. Without that, it’s not even considered.
edwinjm··on Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025)
An American company will always follow US law, no matter the local laws.
edwinjm··on Fix your robots.txt or your site disappears from Google
Google, Bing do
edwinjm··on Fix your robots.txt or your site disappears from Google
It does not contradict. In their second case, there’s no crawling.
edwinjm··on Fix your robots.txt or your site disappears from Google
Indeed. “Unreachable” is very different than “not found”.
edwinjm··on GitHub should charge everyone $1 more per month to fund open source
I’m sure many companies like to pay. It’s probably the cheapest way to solve a business problem. It should be the norm. If a company wants to have a bug fixed or a feature added, they should pay. And GitHub should make it easy to do so.
edwinjm··on Show HN: An interactive guide to how browsers work
Bit unfortunate that more than half of the page is dedicated to network requests, but almost all work and complexity of the browser is in the parsing and rendering pipeline.
edwinjm··on The World Happiness Report is beset with methodological problems
In democracies, you sometimes can see authoritarians being elected. Current situation in the USA is one example.
edwinjm··on Getting a Gemini API key is an exercise in frustration
Turn time wheel? How do you know in advance how long you stay? Where I live, you start and when you leave, you click stop. You also get reminders in case you forgot to stop.

The Nobel Peace Prize, which he really wanted, isn't a priority anymore, is it?
edwinjm··on What I look for in typeface licenses
I used to buy fonts, but font foundries made such a mess with licensing that I only use OFL licensed fonts now.

That’s how Nordic people look like <grin>
edwinjm··on Rotring 600 Ballpoint Pen
I have such a pen and it’s not my favorite. The grippy part doesn’t feel nice, it’s too rough. Also, the top button makes an abrasive, squeaky sound.

It’s not made to be kind to humans.
