edude03··on I will do anything to end homelessness except build more homes (2018)
I think anyone who has actually been hands on trying to improve the lives of the unhomed know that 1) it’s a gradient between “I get kicked out of x everyday and go back at night” and “I’m sleeping under a bridge” and 2) rarely is it the actual cost of the home that’s the problem. Often it’s mental health / substance abuse / lack of a support system. Heck I think there is enough movies/shows about how people fall through the cracks that if you really cared you could learn about the problems in a fun night at home watching Netflix.

So no hate to the author but this feels like pointless political posturing

edude03··on Show HN: Workout.cool – Open-source fitness coaching platform
Could be, I've seen a weird trend of using AI to write content when it doesn't make sense. Sure, using it to write a blog post about a topic is "slop" but I can see arguments for it. Using it to improve thoughts you have in your head, by making up details and add emojis however, I can't understand.

For example as a heavy FB Market place user I see a lot of stuff like:

[picture of an iPhone 12]

- iphone 14 - new battery - delivers to [enter your state here] - comes with [enter accessories it comes with]

Like they were too lazy to even fill in the brackets or ensure some level of accuracy. What's the point?

You know counting calories by taking a picture literally doesn't work right? In fact, I'd argue it's one of the best examples of when an LLM confidently feeds you misinformation. An obvious example, a chicken breast fried in oil and a chicken breast air fried look identical, yet the oil fried one would have 3-4x the calories at least. Don't take my work for it though - this was just on HN the other day: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44220135
edude03··on Resurrecting a dead torrent tracker and finding 3M peers
Sorry, should have been more specific - I don't care if people know what I downloaded - I just wonder how stuff I definitely didn't download is attributed to my IP address. Can't be that my dynamic IP address changed, because of the small time between stuff I did download and stuff I didn't. So then, is the scanner wrong, or do I have rouge device(s) on my network?
edude03··on Resurrecting a dead torrent tracker and finding 3M peers
huh, weirdly it has stuff I did download and stuff I didn't download within minutes of each other ... should I be worried?
edude03··on AI threatens to raid the water reserves of Europe's driest regions
I asked a friend who works on datacenter this so it's secondhand information but - apparently it's cheaper to use mist cooling where you essentially spray cold water on hot parts and it evaporates off instead of the normal closed loop system that you'd see in a home water cooling for example. And while it's not destroyed, it means you need a constant supply of clean water, and the evaporated water doesn't necessarily go back to the body of water you got it from.
edude03··on AOSP project is coming to an end
Hypervisor yeah but it’s still possible for code in debug mode - there is even an app that automates the process for you https://github.com/osy/Jitterbug (requires a paid dev account)
edude03··on AOSP project is coming to an end
Can’t you already do that? If you pay 99/year you can sign your own apps with whatever entitlements no? You just can’t submit them to the Apple Store for obvious reasons
edude03··on Android 16 is here
Where did you get that idea?
edude03··on Apple announces Foundation Models and Containerization frameworks, etc
Basically this - network effects are huge. People will definitely by hardware if it solves a problem for them - so many people bought blackberries just for BBM.
edude03··on Vision Language Models Are Biased
I feel vindicated! I'm building a tool with VLMs and I've noticed the answer is always what I expect to see, but wrong if the input is slightly different than expected.

Just like the article - if I have picture of a cup, it says cup, if I have a picture of a dog, it says dog, if it's a dog with a cup, it says a dog with a ball (noticed this with Qwen and InternVL).

edude03··on My AI skeptic friends are all nuts

You say that like it's an absurd idea, but in fact this is what most companies would do.

edude03··on How I like to install NixOS (declaratively)
I built something like this a few years ago. Essentially how it worked is you'd specify the path to a nix flake in the kernel parameters, and once the installer was booted it would pull that flake and run it (which ran the installer, formatted the disks and restarted the system). It was part of a larger project but I wonder how the nix team would feel about a small binary that would be included in the default installer image that does this
edude03··on Coding without a laptop: Two weeks with AR glasses and Linux on Android
I know this isn't what you're asking for - I wasn't either - but I found a used surface pro (arm or x86) is better for this use case than I imagined. They're so cheap used on eBay or FB marketplace that I think it's worth trying if you're already willing to buy a new iPad anyway.

I have two now - the SPX - they're ~$200 used, with LTE and 16GB of ram, and a SP8 - i5/16gb of ram ~$350 used from FB marketplace. The SP8 runs Fedora 40 and it's light enough that I just keep it in my backpack whether I'll need it that day or not.

edude03··on O2 VoLTE: locating any customer with a phone call
I don’t know anything about IMS but I assume they have to stay on the call long enough for the debug headers to be sent (like the tracing the call thing in every spy movie but real) and if that’s the case can this be mitigated by “just”* not answering calls from unknown numbers?

*yes I’m aware that means people you know who have your number could also exploit this

edude03··on Comma 3X: Initial Impressions
huh, you can't read this blog if your referrer is "hacker" "news"? Seems kind of childish regardless of what you think of this site. Anyway

> It’s open source

> I can just move this device into the new one, rather than being beholden to the car’s manufacturer who at best wants to charge an exorbitant subscription fee for this stuff

Unless things changed recently, the model isn't open source so not really open source but more importantly, something about the comparison between "open source" and the "exorbitant" price of $99/month rubs me the wrong way. Opens ource isn't generally free to develop, and if you'd be willing to buy and install this it clearly provides more than $0 of value to OP - why wouldn't they want to invest some money a month into the project so that it sticks around and continues to mature? Why is open source always treated as the "free" option just because it costs _you_ $0 to download it and why Is $99/m exorbitant? Compared to what?

edude03··on $20K Bounty Offered for Optimizing Rust Code in Rav1d AV1 Decoder
> just because it's not in your favorite language.

Kind of a strawman argument though. The question is, is the 5% difference (today) worth the memory safety guaranties? IE, would you be OK if your browser used 5% more power displaying video, if it meant you couldn't be hacked via a memory safety bug.

edude03··on DoorDash to acquire Deliveroo
> I'm a software developer with a flexible work schedule paid hourly, the act of going to grab the food myself and not working for 30 minutes would cost me way more than delivery costs (even cooking my own meals can be more expensive when time is factored in, compared to food price at restaurant + delivery cost (for ~2 portions prepared in 30 minutes

Off topic but I quit consulting because I had this exact realization. Sure making $1000 to fix a production outage in 15 minutes on a Saturday was amazing but it made me always think about life in billable hours to the point where I was not hanging out with friends or going to the gym anymore

edude03··on VMware revives its free ESXi hypervisor
Yeah considering they got rid of the free version and 10x'd (or more) the price in an attempt to squeeze those who were entrenched in the ecosystem, I can't imagine anyone would willingly sign up to be squeezed in the future.
edude03··on New Zealand's $16B health dept managed finances with single Excel spreadsheet
> but errors are almost always a skill issue

Sure but to compare it to tech, this is why we build tooling like linters and typed languages so that we don’t lose millions of dollars because we needed the average developer to implement a feature. I imagine in heath care it’s even more skewed because a SW eng can see the compiler output and make changes but the person entering the data isn’t (for example) the nurse that’s using the needles to be accounted for

edude03··on Windows 11 Insider Preview Build
First time I've seen a windows update on the front page of HN. What's particularly interesting or news worthy about this update?

edude03··on Apple introduces iPad Air with powerful M3 chip and new Magic Keyboard
I want apple's version of connected standby - I want to open my laptop and all my notifications, emails, chats, photos whatever to have already been downloaded while the laptop was idle in my bag.
edude03··on Putting Andrew Ng's OCR models to the test
+1, and worse other than pointing out where it was wrong, there wasn't any clear test criteria, process, side by side comparison, details about either model etc.
edude03··on Open Deep Research
Obviously the reliability problems would go away if you self-host but the "point" is most people rely on external providers because they can't locally run models of similar quality. So what do you do if deepseek cuts you off? For most getting 12? H100s (for the 671b) is essentially impossible.
edude03··on Open Deep Research
Porn.

When I first looked into stable diffusion I wanted to see what people were making with it and there was a few sites that showed stuff people had generated and it was 70% porn 29% high fantasy wallpapers (numbers are illustrative). Recently I've been looking at different text generation inference platforms like tgi and vllm on reddit, and 1 in 5 posts in the localllm subreddits are "What's the best model for erotic role play?"

edude03··on Kagi – Introducing Fair Pricing
I don't understand people who would use kagi (or any search engine) sparringly. If you're already willing to shell out money for a replacement, why wouldn't you use it all the time?
edude03··on Why Twitter is such a big deal (2009)
Yeah I think it comes down to two things

1) the low friction leading to more mundane things being posted 2) the norm being text content not from people you necessarily follow / people who aren’t “celebrities” so mundane relatable things tend to bubble up.

I do wonder if one day video understanding LLMs will be able to understand what a photo/video is about and show you content that’s relevant to you

edude03··on Why Twitter is such a big deal (2009)
Only takes a lot of good faith if you assume the worst in people. But yes, I’m married and sometimes while my wife is driving I’ll use my phone.

More importantly though it was just a randomly picked use case. Whether twitter is a good news platform or not doesn’t depend on whether it is used while driving

edude03··on Why Twitter is such a big deal (2009)
Around when Elon bought twitter he said (paraphrased) that twitter was the realtime news platform. It’s something I feel like is true in a way that should be true for other social media platforms but isn’t.

For example, say I’m in traffic on the highway. Searching 401 might in this example surface tweets from other drivers on the highway talking about traffic and/or posts about an accident they came across.

Nothing about this sort of interaction is baked into the protocol as far as I can tell yet FB insta snap etc don’t work this way.
