edmanet··on Up Close with Segway's Advanced Personal Robot (2016) [video]
Can it get me a cold beer from the fridge?
edmanet··on Using a Custom Domain with Firebase Hosting
I thought this would be an interesting article then about 5 seconds after loading the page a giant advertisement took over the page. So I closed the tab. Oh well.
edmanet··on Ask HN: How much does it cost to maintain a petition site like We the People?
First off, it's a government site so everything is a little more expensive.

Secondly, I think that million dollar price tag is about right. Let's say you have 10 full time people building and maintaining the site. Developers, dev ops, security, pointy haired managers, etc. Add in the hardware/hosting costs and you have a million dollars right there.

edmanet··on Ask HN: What was your worst $1000 investment?
Wedding ring. I could have spent $10k on it and the marriage still would have failed.
edmanet··on AMA: NY AG Schneiderman on net neutrality and protecting our voice in government
Un-related to the FCC nightmare, how do you, as AG, feel about bitcoin and crypto currencies?
edmanet··on Dyson, Famed for Vacuum Cleaners, Aims to Build Electric Car
Why do I have a feeling that their electric car will suck?
edmanet··on Ask HN: Sell my startup for $14M because I can't raise $2M?
If you're young, sell now. Then take some time and pursue something more recreational for a while. When you're ready to get back into the grind you'll still have a nice stake to start with.
edmanet··on Transform Your Bitcoin into Cold, Hard Cash
Yeah, the Bitpay card is nice except for the dormancy fee. If you don't use it for 90 days they start charging you $5 a month. No thanks.
edmanet··on The NSA has linked the WannaCry computer worm to North Korea
We're are in an Orwellian decade.
edmanet··on SSH Check – public SSH server testing tool
netcat -z -w 2 $ipaddress 22;echo $?

How hard is that?

edmanet··on Even moderate drinking could harm the brain

edmanet··on Kik Messenger App Debuts Own Digital Currency Amid Bitcoin Boom
Why not just use bitcoin?
edmanet··on [dead]
IMHO This is a stupid knee jerk reaction. Many Uber drivers ARE immigrants. Not using Uber makes it worse for them, not better.

The whole "delete Uber" thing may have been started by the taxi drivers in the first place. Maybe they saw an opportunity to take out some of the competition.

Do what you want though. We get it. You're a freedom fighter.

edmanet··on As of Today, We Have Used Up All the Earth's Resources for 2016
What about wind power? Are we out of wind?

edmanet··on A Rose in a Glass by Any Other Name Is a Crack Pipe (2012)
He learned that 3 years ago? They've been around since the 80's
edmanet··on Mobirise Free Website Builder v1.6 is out
No Linux support. Oh well.
edmanet··on Do software engineers need mathematics?
My dad was a computer guy in the 60's. He designed core memory modules. When I was in high school in the late 70's I expressed an interest in computers (Heathkits in particular) and he told me I wasn't good enough in math to really get into the computer field. The fact was, I didn't like math and never took the advanced classes so I took his word for it.

Then came the PC. In my late 20's I bought an 8088 and found my true calling. I don't hold a grudge against my old man for his short-sightedness; I think he'd be amazed by what we're doing with computers these days and I think he'd be proud that I was able to follow in his footsteps.

edmanet··on ANSI Art Collection from Old BBSs
Brings me back to the days when I had a 300baud modem on my C-64 and tied up the phone line for hours at a time.
edmanet··on The sorry state of Indian IT industry
You get what you pay for.
edmanet··on Staples Agrees to Buy Office Depot for About $6.3 Billion
From an IT perspective, it means a lot of integration work between the two companies. So the employees have that to look forward to. I imagine many Office Depot employees will be jumping ship early to avoid the massive layoffs at the end of the year.
