edlucas··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2025)
"Disqualification"?
edlucas··on I spent 3 years working on a coat hanger [video]
There are plenty of examples of shallow closets in older homes/apartments that were once workers' quarters. I lived in a triple-decker in Somerville, MA that had a bedroom closet that was only deep enough for hooks on the back wall to hold the limited clothing of the occupants. The only way I could use a rod for hangers was to remove the closet door.

Simone's hangers would have been perfect.

edlucas··on Ask HN: How do I code offline for a week?
I used this graphical cheatsheet to get past the beginner stage: http://www.viemu.com/a_vi_vim_graphical_cheat_sheet_tutorial...

There's also a PDF version: https://www.glump.net/howto/desktop/vim-graphical-cheat-shee...

Kagi search also supports this bang shortcut, which I find very handy.

edlucas··on Wearing flashy/status clothes makes people less likely to cooperate with you
And here I thought I was the only one wielding a seam-ripper to this end. However, my patch for covering embroidered logos advertises Weyland-Yutani. I figure if you're going to shill for a company, it might as well be The Company.

Also, for excellent quality, US-made clothes with unobtrusive and easily-removed logos, you can't go wrong with https://www.american-giant.com/ .

edlucas··on Show HN: Veganize any recipe site with EatKind Chrome extension
There's a tasty jackfruit carnitas recipe in the cookbook, "La Vida Verde". You may need to work on an improved method to make them crispy...perhaps adding a final step of putting the skillet under a broiler.
edlucas··on Vermont proposes providing broadband internet service to all state residents
Burlington Telecom provided excellent service as a public utility. Symmetric gigabit for $70 and 150 Mbps for $55.
edlucas··on Burger King is rolling out meatless Impossible Whoppers nationwide
One here. I'm concerned with being the cause of animal suffering and not concerned if my vegan food was cooked on the same surface as meat.
edlucas··on Is group chat making you sweat? (2016)
I run into the same problem in Chrome, using Privacy Badger. However, the Mercury Reader extension does a great job reformatting the page for readability.
edlucas··on VPNs won't save save you from Congress' internet privacy giveaway
Also, Firefox's "Reader View" (book icon on the inside-right of the address bar) renders the full article.
edlucas··on Best method to cancel human voices at work or public space?
I've had great success over the last 10 years with a pair of Sennheiser 280 HD Pro over-the-ear headphones (https://en-us.sennheiser.com/hd-280-pro). They are great at passive noise attenuation across the spectrum (32 dB) and are extremely comfortable for long periods. It doesn't hurt that they sound great (if you like a flat frequency response) and since they are made for pro DJ and studio use, they're durable and the cord, ear pads, and headband pad are replaceable.

If I don't want the distraction of music, but still need to wipe out the sound of people talking nearby, I fire up https://rain.simplynoise.com/.

edlucas··on Ask HN: How have you left Google's services?
I've recently been looking at Fastmail and Kolab (https://kolabnow.com/) to replace Gmail and Google Calendar. Kolab adds limited notebook and file storage functionality, but I haven't found any decent reviews of the service.

Is anyone using Kolab who'd like to comment on how it's working for them?

edlucas··on Salary transparency at Stack Overflow
Just to add another link to the pile, the most useful database I've found of base salaries for comparison is the publicly available H1B data. You should account for the costs to the company of sponsorship in addition to the base.

The data is available down to the company and title: http://www.h1bdata.info/

edlucas··on Ask HN: What code-editor do you use?
I just converted to Sublime Text 2, using the "Vintage Mode" VI keybindings. I'm still missing a few things, but the "Vintage Ex" package and a handful of custom key overrides have gotten me pretty close to an ideal VI environment. Sublime Text is extremely customizable.

My favorite language is C, but I'm doing mainly web front-end work now.

edlucas··on ForgeJS launches first full stack JavaScript development school in Seattle
I went looking for the same info. There are details about the hours in the right-hand sidebar once you click into the information for an individual class (e.g. http://forgejs.com/advanced-js.html).

It appears that the $550 is for a single weekend, which seems pretty reasonable compared to classes at Bocoup.

edlucas··on Confessions of a car salesman
I've just been learning quite a bit about the business of car sales. Car dealerships make most of their profit in the parts and service departments of their store, so it's definitely in your favor to run your best offer past your local dealership. They are more likely to take a smaller profit on your purchase in the hopes of having you get your scheduled maintenance performed in their shop.
edlucas··on Ask HN: Best headphones?
I love using the HD280s at work. They replaced a pair of Sony headphones which stopped emitting audio when the active noise-cancellation circuitry died. The Sennheisers block more of the mid and high level conversation noise (32db attenuation) and sound much better.

Additionally, since they are "pro DJ" headphones, Sennheiser offers replacement cords and earcups.
