edgyquant··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
Only according the far left, in reality this is not true and shouldn’t even be entertained except to a laugh at people trying this hard to shift the Overton window in their favor
edgyquant··on Humanity has the debate about AI consciousness backwards
Where does consciousness appear in biology? It’s a philosophical/metaphysical concept so far as I can tell
edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Appealing to credentials is irrelevant and bad faith, the fact is your ability to make a good living purely in services is irrelevant to the fact that nations have real national defense to consider and the last 80 years of global trade has been upheld by American military might. Your credentials mean nothing if you can’t appreciate how spoiled we have all been by this very unique system, and your arguments should stand on their own and your current argument is to respond to a discussion about securing vital industries with “I’m able to feed myself with just services” as if that scales to an entire nation that has been the one upholding global trade rather than a benefit of, and downstream, of that nation doing that. And that nation has until recently taken very serious steps at every turn to ensure its military and resource dominance so that people like you and I can feel comfortable with our office jobs.

I don’t have an attitude, it’s just annoying hearing people still pretend history is over and great power conflict is no longer a concern because we’ve reached utopia, and thinking that because they have a certain job that means real, cold and calculating, geopolitics is no longer a requirement.

edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
It actually sounds like you live in an era where these things are guaranteed by a hyper power and are frankly out of touch with how international relations really work
edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Our military is dependent on a manufacturing base that is dependent on China currently
edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Regardless the analogy of grocery shopping falls apart and shows a total lack of understanding the other sides worldview
edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
There will not be zero semiconductors. Tariffs incentivize domestic production by raising imported prices allowing our industries to be competitive. There is no world where the military and industry just don’t have processors anymore they will be forced to invest locally that’s THE point of tariffs traditionally (see: the us after its founding)

And the chips act was subsidies

edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
1. This mindset is a result of American hegemony. Before WW2, before the 90s really, no one thought this was a possibility.

2. Right but if it is dependent on a foreign nation for something vital that means it no longer can confidently assert its independence

3. Don’t disagree at all

edgyquant··on Humanity has the debate about AI consciousness backwards
Consciousness does not appear to be biological, that is an opinion and a highly debated one
edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
In academic and think tank circles it is. Too many people treat political theatre and, frankly, entertainment pieces as reflective of the actual policy debates when they are mass media designed to get clicks.
edgyquant··on Humanity has the debate about AI consciousness backwards
I don’t know where consciousness is but I think if we accept that you can simulate a brain exactly that doesn’t prove consciousness of a model as consciousness is a metaphysical concept really
edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
I dislike this analogy because a nation is not a person grocery shopping and anyway if a single grocery store was the only way to get food that would put me in a very lopsided relationship with them and the power dynamics in such a case are obviously bad for the person.

Nations have interests and there’s a real conversation to be had that a country should ensure it has strategic industries so its existence is never at the whims of another.

edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
The chips act used tax dollars and subsidies to incentivize companies to build here. This and tariffs on semis are not much different the only difference is with a tariff you only pay the tax when you buy imported goods
edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Services can’t fight a war or feed you. A nation that wishes to be a real power must be able to guarantee it can feed and protect its people.
edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
From what I understand having the dollar be our main export is a reason why we haven’t had real industrial policy. We export dollars so we have to buy from overseas.
edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Not if you make it extremely costly with tax policy and tariffs.
edgyquant··on Humanity has the debate about AI consciousness backwards
Are brains responsible for consciousness? Or are brains a tool that our consciousness uses to understand the world?
edgyquant··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
Sometimes I think so, I don’t visually see anything in my mind it’s all just thoughts about things like I can feel the image but can’t actually see it.

However I have taken psilocybin mushrooms and when I do I can literally visualize things in my mind as crystal clear as I can see the real world. So I think it isn’t just semantics

edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Context is important. 100% tariffs on Canada is stupid, 100% tariffs on China because we don’t want any industry dependent on a major military adversary is something worth discussing even if the answer is to not do that in the end
edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
100% agree
edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
I have never met anyone who thought other countries paid the tariffs. Im sure they exist but this seems more like something retractors say to make themselves feel smarter than people in support of tariffs. People who care at all about tariffs tend to know how they work.

The president says a lot of really stupid things and those stupid things are highlighted, but that’s not indicative of the average and one of the main talking points about tariffs is that they increase costs in order to incentivize local suppliers

edgyquant··on Trade (and Tariffs)
Unfortunately in our hyper partisan, sound bite, climate you can’t discuss the trade offs of tax policies anymore you either support the party line or you’re the enemy.

This is an example of “person pretends to not understand a simple thing thus naming conversation impossible”
edgyquant··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
Notice how I used the words “core business” but that they didn’t do business at all
edgyquant··on Emacs 31: An unofficial guide to Markdown-ts-mode
It’s just called ai-code I’m new to eMacs so this popped up but had a bunch of issues I was trying to debug https://github.com/tninja/ai-code-interface.el
edgyquant··on Emacs 31: An unofficial guide to Markdown-ts-mode
What are people’s workflows for using eMacs with generative coding? I’m trying to get a workflow where I can generate code and approve it like a PR (maybe leave comments for a next round of generation) but I’m new to eMacs and the ai coding package isn’t working with the latest eMacs

Neither of those companies core business model was serving llms
edgyquant··on One corner of China’s internet is insisting that the Tang Dynasty never existed
The video of the girl crying about Hellen Keller being fake was hilarious regardless of how true or not any of it is
edgyquant··on One corner of China’s internet is insisting that the Tang Dynasty never existed
Does this stuff really matter when you get down to it? How much does it being true or false change the average persons daily life?
edgyquant··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
I would say you should seek advice from someone has lucky and successful as Paul Graham but I wouldn’t take his public Twitter as advice it’s entertainment period.
