edgineer··on Group Behind Steam Censorship Policies Have Powerful Allies
The link 404s now, apparently removed.

And comments in this thread are dead. What happened? A legit retraction, or the "powerful allies" at work?

edgineer··on Experts lay into Tesla safety in federal autopilot trial
"it is my professional opinion that Tesla's Autopilot is defective because Tesla knowingly allows the car to be operated in operational domains for which it is explicitly not designed for."

Outrageous; compare to cruise control on other cars.

In line with the outrageous regulation kill-switch-on-all-new-cars-after-2026, inside the infrastructure and jobs bill passed in 2021.

I see there's a newer bill drafted called No Kill Switches in Cars Act, hope it gets moving.

The paradigm is that teachers will teach life skills like public speaking and entrepreneurship. Book smarts that can be more effectively taught by AI will be, once schools catch up.
edgineer··on NYT to start searching deleted ChatGPT logs after beating OpenAI in court
What I mean is there are two meanings to "expectation of privacy": the Bayesian prior, and the legal stance. I have an expectation of privacy in my home but I still close the shades.
edgineer··on NYT to start searching deleted ChatGPT logs after beating OpenAI in court
When my expectation of privacy is violated, I'll have learned a little more about such violations, but I won't drop my expectation not to be violated.
edgineer··on Why Do Swallows Fly to the Korean DMZ?
And as the article points out, both politics and human activity contribute. Displaced people who live in the DMZ islands build nests for them.
edgineer··on Using Windows 10 past EOL (via LTSC supported to 2032)
I suggest making a disk-to-image backup of your whole boot drive using clonezilla, to a second external disk.

To test recovery, take a third spare drive, restore to it from the backup image using clonezilla, and replace your boot drive with it. If this boots up well, you could even do your upgrade tests using this spare disk, restoring from the backup file as necessary. Then once you're confident, put your boot drive back in and proceed to upgrade it.

edgineer··on 122.88TB SSD on sale for $12,399 quite a bargain – if you can afford it
Some high end gaming motherboards have U.2.

If you don't have a U.2 connector, you can use a PCIe adapter card.

If you want 16x M.2 slots, you can use two 8x M.2 PCIe carrier cards.

If a party campaigned on forcing price advertised = price paid I would vote for them.
edgineer··on "Hands off working COBOL code" –protest sign in NYC
Thanks for correcting me. Didn't realize people held that opinion.
edgineer··on "Hands off working COBOL code" –protest sign in NYC
I see two meanings: 1. He's protesting DOGE's reignition of the SSA codebase overhaul 2. He's making a joke that you don't dare touch a running legacy system because you'll break it

He probably means the second, but the first was my initial thought (I hear COBOL programmers make upwards of $1000/hr). Fixing these old systems has been on my mind.

edgineer··on How the Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg Got Added to the White House Signal Chat
This sell sheet describes a phone capable of and approved for TS voice calls and data hotspot, but does not advertise text messaging.
edgineer··on National security adviser Michael Waltz reportedly conducted business via Gmail
> Waltz had “potentially exploitable information” sent to his Gmail, such as his schedule and other work documents

Says nothing about him sending information from the account

Goes on to say one of his aides "used Gmail for more sensitive material, such as discussing military positions and weapons systems" which is pretty vague as far as accusations go

The test may be to see if there's a market for the product. What you'll learn in that test is much more than a binary answer.
edgineer··on We Were Badly Misled About the Event That Changed Our Lives
I don't recall any big media stories pushing deliberate release.

Now that I think of it, I DO recall many bullshit spouters, commenters, fringe blogs, "independent journalists," who pushed deliberate release on their little corners of the internet, but who pays them any attention?

edgineer··on Posthog/.cursorrules
I could really use objective benchmarks for rules. Mine looked like this at one point, but I'd add more as I noticed cursor's weaknesses, and some would be project specific, and eventually it'd get too long so I'd tear a lot out, not noticing much difference along the way and writing the rules based on intuition.

But even if we had benchmarks before, cursor supports different rules files now in the .rules folder, so back to the drawing board figuring out what works best

edgineer··on Exploring the Paramilitary Leaks
Turning leadership of an already radicalized organization is not what he means. New converts to a group who are actually informants will provoke an organization to radicalism.

edgineer··on Multiple Russia-aligned threat actors actively targeting Signal Messenger
I'll feel pessimistic like this, but then something like Tinfoil Chat [0] comes along and sparks my interest again. It's still all just theoretical to me, but at least I don't feel so bad about things.

With a little bit of hardware you could get a lot of assurance back: "Optical repeater inside the optocouplers of the data diode enforce direction of data transmission with the fundamental laws of physics."

edgineer··on Microsoft Bob: Microsoft's biggest flop of the 1990s
Us kids loved it. Spent a lot of time configuring rooms, theming them, exploring all the features. The most intriguing one was a mailroom, but that's because it asked to configure your modem and email server settings which I couldn't do. Had separate profiles for each of us in the family and our friends; but we soon learned you could reset anyone's password by saying you forgot it. Once the griefing started it lost some appeal, but I still have only fond memories of MS Bob.
