edelhans··on DeepSeek Harness Desktop for macOS and Windows
I strongly prefer China having access to my personal data than the US.
edelhans··on US holds off blacklisting DeepSeek, more than 100 firms deemed security risks
And what makes you think that the US still has such a system?
edelhans··on MacBook Neo Deep Dive: Benchmarks, Wafer Economics, and the 8GB Gamble
Linux is pretty bad at handling out of memory. In my old thinkpad T14 with Mint everything came to a halt when webpack gobbled up my 16GB of ram. Couldnt even move the cursor, stuff just got stuck hard
edelhans··on Tailscale's new macOS home
Considering that I need a good dozen utility apps to override absolutely bonkers macOS design descicions there is no way around that.
edelhans··on Make macOS consistently bad unironically
I keep jearing this but after years of using MacOS Is still hate the windowing behavior. There is already a way for windowless apps to run - its in the top right corner of my menu bar. Why not use this if you _really_ need windowless apps to run in the background? Also dont get me started on window switching...

Exactly what you think - pops out a cup holder
edelhans··on Claude Code gets native LSP support
They just announced the end of their fleet editor
edelhans··on Backing up Spotify
But you only need to record your song once and get money forever. Nobody pays me per function invocation in production, that would be very nice
edelhans··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
You can also install uBlock Origin on Edge for Android btw.
edelhans··on Firefox 143 for Android to introduce DoH
Edge for Android also has (limited) extension support. It only supports a subset of extensions, but I am using uBlock Origin (full version, although _lite_ is also available), Sponsorblock and Dark Reader for example.
edelhans··on Samsung Removes Bootloader Unlocking with One UI 8
I just unlocked the bootloader on my Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 today (which was a nightmare to do btw.). Why did I unlock it? The device has nice hardware, but is stuck with Android 13 and does not get any security updates either, so flashing a custom ROM is my only chance of having an up-to-date device.

Next step will be to try PostmarketOS and see how that goes

edelhans··on Material 3 Expressive
The cursor being captured when hovering buttons is the worst UI I've seen in a very long time
edelhans··on What is HDR, anyway?
I honestly do not know if I have any screen that supports HDR. At least I've never noticed any improved image quality when viewing HDR video content and compare the image on my M3 Macbook Pro screen vs. an old external IPS monitor. Maybe my eyes are just broken?
edelhans··on Practical UX for startups surviving without a designer
Yeah but even if your app is the new Uber for dogs the goal should still be to let users accomplish their task as fast as possible and not some app engagement metric.
edelhans··on Firmware update bricks HP printers, makes them unable to use HP cartridges
Its not always that easy. I specifically bought a Zenfone 9 due to its small size and unlockable bootloader. Guess what - Asus removed the bootloader unlock tool after I purchased the device. Can't trust anyone these days
edelhans··on macOS Tips and Tricks (2022)
The big difference for me is that there is no way to quickly jump between multiple windows of the same application. I often have multiple different projects open in vscode and would love a way to switch between them without having to right-click and selecting one from the list. All I want is something like the windows taskbar with auto-grouping disabled.
edelhans··on Pi-hole v6
I just use an old macbook air with a bluetooth keyboard that also has a touchpad. The thing is in sleep mode when not needed, so it wakes up fast and does not need a lot of energy. With that setup I can access whatever media I want, have a solid adblocker and a browser with a real keyboard.
edelhans··on Show HN: World's most performant web table (multicore, DOM-based)
For comparison - I'm getting solid 120fps with Brave on Android.
edelhans··on The Google Fit APIs will no longer be available after June 30, 2025
Did you already check Garmin watches? They have great battery life and allow local data access via their FIT SDK [1].

You could also go down the DIY route and build one yourself. I did just that and am really happy with the outcome. Check out https://ben.akrin.com/plottybot for a great design and instructions

As promised, here is the repo: https://github.com/hanneslinder/esp-pixel-matrix
edelhans··on Tidbyt hardware display device: a review
As promised here is the source code, PCB Gerber file and the STEP files for the case: https://github.com/hanneslinder/esp-pixel-matrix

Hope you find it useful and don't be too harsh with the code quality as this was my first time writing C++ :)

edelhans··on Tidbyt hardware display device: a review
I'm using this library: https://github.com/mrfaptastic/ESP32-HUB75-MatrixPanel-I2S-D...

And I'll add the pcb files to the repo, good idea!

edelhans··on Tidbyt hardware display device: a review
Using a pictureframe is a cool idea! I actually have an 64x64 matrix in my drawer that I havent used yet. Should you decide to open source your code I'd be very interested too.

I'll update my comment tomorrow with a GitHub link, just need to tidy up the repo first. This was my very first time writing c++, so the code is probably not the cleanest ;)

edelhans··on Tidbyt hardware display device: a review
I'be build pretty much the same thing using an esp32 an 3d printed enclosure and a small custom pcb. You can connect via websocket from a browser and upload images, text, ect.

I've also managed to implement OTA firmware updates and a similar Wifi based setup as this product has.

If anyone is interested I'm happy to put it on Github.

edit: I'll cleanup the code and update this comment with a link to the repo tomorrow

edelhans··on Show HN: I made a tool to improve Mission Control on macOS
Exactly. I really don't mind paying for apps in general, but with macOS even those tiny trivial utils are mostly not open source / free. I'm talking stuff like changing mouse acceleration, add a "new xxx file" right click menu to finder or closing apps in mission control. Compared to Linux (and even Windows) I really miss some sort of open source movement.
