eddsh1994··on A GPT in 60 Lines of NumPy
I didn't think about lazy loading, I also didn't know they were scoped differently! I thought it was some sort of organisation to keep imports close to usage. Thanks!
eddsh1994··on Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired?
> make wealth creation via employment almost impossible.

Depends on what 'wealth' means here, but you can get a 1% salary in England in your late 20s by contracting in tech and save several grand a month. Put that in shares & buy-to-lets and you'll be very well off by 40 compared to the average person. With the lower cost of living I don't see any issues here... If that's what drives you of course.

Why do people in ML put imports inside function definitions?
eddsh1994··on My 2022 self was wrong about meditation, monitors, and sleep
Hahaha I'm in Palo Alto, grew up in a farm, and constantly look at places online to buy. Moving to Stockholm in August, hopefully the next stop after that will be a farm.
eddsh1994··on The digital pound: A new form of money for households and businesses?
Oh don't say that, that sounds possible :(

You could put it as a SaaS API or behind a paywall as a web app - you genuinely could get paying users and wouldn’t have to break the economy while you do it!
eddsh1994··on First builder’s remedy plan for Bay Area revealed in Los Altos Hills
Have you ever tried to use public transport to get from Los Altos to San Jose? Any other developed country trumps public transport in the middle of the Bay. My wife, who loves public transport, gave up almost immediately when we moved here - I just Uber but would use public transport if available. Cycling just can't get you far enough sadly.

Honestly I come back every 2 years for about a month and then realize I'm spending hours cutting virtual trees and leave again. But for that month... man it's so much fun & nostalgic!
eddsh1994··on Why do we create modern desktop GUI apps using HTML/CSS/JavaScript? (2022)
I work in Monorepos and trying project(s) wide refactors take way more time sometimes hanging. This is Python vs PyCharm (but also involving JS). I’ve not had issues with Rust but my works rust/C is far smaller LOC so haven’t stressed it enough yet. Saying that I still prefer CLion as it has more features and is just as quick (M1 Max 64GB).

TypeScript!
eddsh1994··on Why do we create modern desktop GUI apps using HTML/CSS/JavaScript? (2022)
Yeah… I earn literally 5x working on a web stack with some Python than I did 4 years ago writing C# windows apps. Anecdotal but I’m pretty sure it’s normal to see big increases when you move over.

VSCode has hardly any functionality a modern IDE has unless you had dozens of extensions and then it slows down

What’s wrong with Simulink? It is better than the average C developers code in terms of safety and correctness

Can you ship it to an Amazon warehouse and have them ship it for you? Then all you have to do is get them all there.
eddsh1994··on Turkey earthquake: please keep 28.540 clear for communications
It’s front page news globally, I’m amazed you weren’t aware! Also trending Twitter etc…
eddsh1994··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
I understand this completely, having worked remotely since February 2019. Can't wait to meet people more often.

You have to be blind to modern geopolitics to say there’s no evidence at all
eddsh1994··on Bank of England and Treasury think UK is 'likely' to need digital currency
And, key here, you trust the government now. If a government you trust erodes privacy over time & then a government you don't like gets into power you're screwed.
eddsh1994··on I hired 5 people to sit behind me and make me productive for a month
I think this has already won the annual prize for weirdest post ever. There's even a "Date Me" form on the site. Claims effective altruism while spending close to $10k to be productive at blogging/yoga.

What sort of productivity challenges do you face that need $9,600 a month and five bodies to fix it?

> Personal trainer 2 days a week for $60/session

Can't wait to leave Palo Alto where a personal trainer is way closer to $200 than $60 per hour. $120 a week for a PT is great.

eddsh1994··on Bank of England and Treasury think UK is 'likely' to need digital currency
It's 2032. Covid Alpha variant is running rampant. In an attempt to prevent Americans breaking mandatory isolation electric cars have been disabled unless authorised by your neighbourhood state leader and all non-online transactions have been blocked.

Of course the writer lists Effective Altruism as an interest. Could save lives with malaria vaccines but instead spends $5k of hiring babysitters.
