eddsh1994··on Emergency bridge loan for SVB customers
Maturities were greater than > 1 year. It's been broken down pretty nicely on twitter by some of the larger VC partners.
eddsh1994··on 30% of YC companies exposed through SVB can’t make payroll in the next 30 days
Thanks!
eddsh1994··on 30% of YC companies exposed through SVB can’t make payroll in the next 30 days
Well an amendment in 2017 to the General Corporation Law of the State of Delaware added Section 115 which explicitly permits Delaware startups to adopt in its certificate of incorporation a requirement that all internal corporate claims are exclusively held in front of a Judge in Delaware. Several cases in California have upheld this. So it's not exactly a crazy question to ask if this would work for YC startups employees.
eddsh1994··on 30% of YC companies exposed through SVB can’t make payroll in the next 30 days
Does that work even if the companies incorporated in Delaware?
eddsh1994··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
Don't know why this is being downvoted - if a bank takes $100 and keeps $20 liquid while investing $80, and then everyone comes for their money, the first $20 is available but the rest will be slower if not completely lost. If everyone tried to take their money yesterday some people will win but a large number will lose... If there wasn't a run on the bank chances are it could have (slightly?) weathered the storm.

It allows criminals to do bad things, common examples would be CP or terrorism.

Alcohol is borrowing happiness today from tomorrow. If you self-medicate with alcohol it will be worse in the longterm. Don't fall down that rabbit hole.

$145k seems too high, $167k seems too low. Weird data - juniors on high rates are more willing to share and seniors in good jobs don't care about these surveys?
eddsh1994··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
Oh I agree! But better to avoid renting in general imo, if it’s a possibility.

Are you in the Bay Area? If so I saw an ad in SF for condos/1 bed flats starting at high $300k on the weekend. With recent zoning changes it might get easier for you soon.
eddsh1994··on “Here's the number I used to win the lottery“ –Entrepreneurs giving advice
Could you explain this a little more? I've worked in early stage startups for almost eight years and had 1 minor acquisition where I got barely anything. I'd love to look into this 'targeted approach' you mention.
eddsh1994··on Ultra-processed foods may contribute to cognitive decline
I like the whole food based diet; essentially buying fresh items simple ingredients. Stick to the meat and produce isles, maybe go to the butchers or bakery for local meat and bread, and a greengrocers for local veg. Make things like sauces from scratch. I enjoy cooking which helps. I believe that no matter what Scientists decide are good/bad for that particular year I'm going to be okay because it's simple, fresh, and rarely processed.

Did you found those IPOs and acquisition startups? That’s very impressive if so!
eddsh1994··on Ask HN: How did you rebuild yourself after having hit rock bottom?
If it helps this isn’t too different to almost every PhD I knew during their final year. My wife was in bits during that year. Just keep pushing on till it’s over, and if you need a holiday to help alleviate burnout do so.

eddsh1994··on America Is Trying to Electrify. There Aren’t Enough Electricians
That’s not as a contractor but as a master union electrician, and from what I gather it’s shift work on reactors so spending several months on site at that rate then having holiday until another gig comes up.
eddsh1994··on America Is Trying to Electrify. There Aren’t Enough Electricians
Na, entry level roles are really around 120k. I know some people on higher amounts sure, but even places like Atherton and Woodside have average household incomes of $300/350k. I live in Palo Alto and have found the 200k mark for startups is pretty good for a fairly senior engineer at a cool company. Of course in the HN bubble we’re all making $1m before bonuses :)

eddsh1994··on America Is Trying to Electrify. There Aren’t Enough Electricians
I wouldn't prematurely leave on the basis of AI, if it does happen you('re friend) can retrain there and then. Chances are there will be all sorts of jobs still requiring technical knowledge when that time comes, if it comes.

If it's an interest you('re friend) has then why not take a couple evening classes to slowly get the foundational skills & ensure you have enough of savings to make that jump in the future if needed?

Fwiw, I live in the Bay Area and one of the best paid people I know is an electrician - he can pull in $1k a day on some jobs - so the upside is there too.

eddsh1994··on Unit Testing PDF Generation
It's interesting how different peoples use of testing terminology is across teams/companies/professions. Vocab is standardized by various ISO's, ASQ, and ISTQB so we could all share the same language, then we don't have to debate about what integration/unit/smoke/component/regression/golden/snapshot testing means
