edandersen··on Every person on the planet should have their own website
Don't do this unless your job is literally to be an "influencer" or you are financially independent. "Build your own personal brand" is really bad advice if you don't want to have to be self employed. Nobody is going to hire someone with a public blog of opinions to a properly senior position.
edandersen··on Microsoft Edge Pre-Installing Google Docs Offline Extension
You can disable "Acceptable ads" in Edge mobile.
edandersen··on Red flags in the Threads privacy policy
Sadly they copied the Quote Tweet function for Threads, when Mastodon mercifully didn't.
edandersen··on Microsoft Edge Pre-Installing Google Docs Offline Extension
They pre install Adblock Plus on Edge mobile. So almost there.
edandersen··on Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting Instagram account, Meta says
Someone probably wants your account removed to release your username.
edandersen··on Threads has passed 2M sign ups in the first 2 hours
Whats the consensus over on Mastadon at the moment? Will the major Mastodon instances block federation with Threads purely out of spite I wonder.
edandersen··on AI and the Automation of Work
How did Evernote rise to become the number one "Shadow IT" app in 2022 and 2023? Has it had a renaissance?
edandersen··on How to Do Great Work
The problem with moonlighting a meaningful side project is that any marketing you do will alert HR to the fact you are moonlighting (HR in large corps pay to have employees' social media scanned).

In most cases you'll either be told to stop or in the worst case your employer will claim they own it.

edandersen··on Asus Zenfone 10
If you want a phone that's actually small (Zenfone 9/10 is the size of an iPhone 14), the Jelly Star is still on Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jellyphone/jelly-star-t...

  - 3 inch screen
  - Headphone jack
  - SD card slot
  - Dual SIM
  - 256GB storage / 8GB RAM as standard
  - 48MP camera
edandersen··on Being “rockstars”: when software was a talents/creatives industry
There are easy ways to make the rockstars "dedicated for life". It's just seen as expensive.
edandersen··on Is ORM still an anti-pattern?
If your default stance in 2023 is that you should start with stored procedures, you are doing something very wrong and you are a risk to the survival of your business.
edandersen··on AWS to remove 62,000-message Simple Email Service ‘always free’ tier
Azure does this too, not just GCP. If you want to be all in MS stack sending emails you have to wire up your own Office 365 account.
edandersen··on Louis Rossmann calls community to leave Reddit
Discord officially does not allow 3rd party clients. In theory your account can be banned for using them.
edandersen··on Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella: All-In on AI for Future Success
Charge extra to fix AI created software.
edandersen··on Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella: All-In on AI for Future Success
More work for consultants and clean up crews.
edandersen··on Find out where you can afford to buy or rent in Great Britain
This is also why in-country remote work is so dangerous to property owners. The one thing that could allow equitable access to housing cannot be allowed to happen.
edandersen··on Ask HN: Anyone at Reddit can confirm a traffic dip?
Discord are up to something with their new global unique @ username system. I expect totally public forums like Reddit soon.
edandersen··on Microsoft Edge removes ability to delete Sync Data from Cloud
For anybody that wants to remove Cloud Synced Data in Edge, visit edge://sync-internals/ and click "Disable Sync (Clear Server Data)". Some PM has hidden the option but the function is still there (for now).
edandersen··on Power Delete Suite for Reddit
People are beginning to realise that any comms in public (even on this hallowed forum) will be used against you if not now but in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 years time, and likely has already been used to train an LLM. Even Twitter actually deletes all your tweets when your account deletion is actioned, Reddit just replaces your name with [user deleted], hence the need for tools like this.

Discord is on the rise with Gen Z as a result. As long as they don't blow it with whatever pivot they are trying to accomplish with the username changes, semi private walled gardens will be the future of the internet.

edandersen··on Reddit will exempt accessibility-focused apps from unpopular API pricing changes
Why doesn't Reddit just disable the ability to "go dark"?
edandersen··on Official Microsoft C# VSCode Extension
That's even worse that it works under the Community terms, as if one of your employees installs it you can be liable for license costs if you have 6+ employees or make 1mm. MS license auditors will be having a field day.
edandersen··on Official Microsoft C# VSCode Extension
This is a commercial extension: "Given C# Dev Kit builds on the same foundations as Visual Studio for some of its functionality, it uses the same license model as Visual Studio."

You have to sign in with a Microsoft account to use the new C# Dev Kit extension in VS Code.

edandersen··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
This is a selling point of Discord. The ability to have a conversation without "researchers" being able to search for it for decades.
edandersen··on “PayPal forcing me to have a cellphone to access my account”
It used to be a potential route to Microsoft MVP too I believe.
edandersen··on Deep sleep may be the best defense against Alzheimer’s
From the study: "Most devices (Fatigue Science Readiband, Fitbit Alta HR, EarlySense Live, ResMed S+, SleepScore Max) performed as well as or better than actigraphy on sleep/wake performance measures".

Great news.

edandersen··on Apple’s new headset meets reality
Sounds cool. Especially if it fits nicely in a bag and can be worn in a hotel room as 2x 4K external monitors when plugged into a Macbook Pro USB-C port. Will probably buy one.
edandersen··on The UK’s Secretive Web Surveillance Program Is Ramping Up
No need for that, just a D notice on Cloudflare and half the internet is decrypted.
edandersen··on Gambling firm allegedly paid blogs to link new mothers to its online games
What do you mean by casino here?
edandersen··on How we hack Hacker News and consistently hit the front page
Repeatedly submitting the same domain from the same account gets a penalty. How did they work around that? Sock puppet accounts and voting rings?
edandersen··on Google Pixel Fold
Until someone actually sells an 8 inch OLED tablet, these are the only options on the market today for a small tablet with a good screen.
