ed_balls··on How the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is being built [video]
Yes I imagine most of the traffic goes through the bridge in Denmark. What is more, that bridge is a single point of failure, which is a problem in case of an accident or maintenance.
ed_balls··on That wild Ask a Manager story
Revolut does this better. You put card info and press Approve in the app a few seconds later.
ed_balls··on Modern human incursion into Neanderthal territories 54k years ago at Mandrin
If I were to bet my money I would bet it on social structure or a disease.

- Homo Sapiens had tribes 100-200 people when Neanderthals had 20-30. They were outnumbered. I'm not suggesting brutal wipe out, but competition for resources.

- we "won" because we were immune to a disease be brought from Africa.

ed_balls··on Ask HN: Any piece of hardware that was more of game changer than you expected?
headphones with noise cancellation (Bose).

Remarkable 2. For reading and drawing stuff e.g. new kitchen arrangement.

ed_balls··on Ask HN: Has anyone sold their employee stock on the secondary market?
>Were you able to sell?

yes, the company allowed people to sell up to 25% of vested shares if you were employed for more than 24 months

>What platform did you use?

Carta

> Were you able to sell w/o board approval? If so, were you able to use private forward contracts to complete a deal?

No

ed_balls··on Uyghur kids detail abuse at China's boarding schools in Xinjiang
I don't think Chinese government told anyone to abuse the children. They are rational actors and it would be extremely bad for them. You will have thousands of extremists. What if someone would fly a plane or try to blow up one of the damns on Yangtze river. That could kill a milion of people and bring the country to their knees.
ed_balls··on Amazon Pip Horror Story
Or maybe because they are immigrants the stakes are higher for them? If they lose the job they may lose visa, so they higher tolerance for BS from management.

Or maybe grow up in a culture that value respect more, so you are biased against questioning the authority.

Or maybe this story is inaccurate/made up. He was put on PIP and requested a transfer at the same time.

Or maybe it's a peter principle at play.

Anyway, I don't think it's fair to post someone's linkedin like that.

ed_balls··on Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong’s Sudoku solver (2018)
> was "Une Hacker Originale" by forming a worker's union in a (nominally) Communist state

nah he was just a puppet/poster boy for a good story. The real reason why communism fail in Poland were:

- coup d'etat by deep state. General Kiszczak did an excellent job. System has changed without a bloody revolution. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czes%C5%82aw_Kiszczak - communism was inefficient. Trading barier made it worse. As a result Soviet Union was weak and didn't have enough influence to keep the system stable. - Kissinger managed to convince China to counter Soviet Union. In 1969 they had to throw and enormous resources at the border.

ed_balls··on On Leaving Facebook
No idea. That's what I heard from a eng manager at FAANG 2 months ago. He said "We don't ask DP questions, they don't resemble problems that you are expected to do while working. You can still some of the problems using DP, but we don't ask pure DP problems."
ed_balls··on On Leaving Facebook
Facebook and other companies banned Dynamic Programming.
ed_balls··on UK government plans publicity blitz against encrypted communications
But there are law that limit the communications e.g. insider trading.

Imagine a public corporation that wants to build a factory, but wants to keep to secret for now, cause they don't want the competition to know or affect the share price.

ed_balls··on UK government plans publicity blitz against encrypted communications
> Norwegian politicians are required by law to only use official channels of communication

Is it really enforacble? What are the sanctions for breaking the law?

What if someone says it's a national secuirty matter?

Scenario nr 1: You are a misiter and you are discussing possible scenarios about a given event (let say something like an abortion). Should pulbic have full access to it?

Scenario nr 2: You are a minister and you are negotiating a new factory in your country. Foregin corporation wants to keep it secret before the deal is reached. How can you communicate?

If politians would be given a device from the deep state to handle all communication then they would have to use is exculsivly, you are givin the deep state an enormous power.

ed_balls··on Russia says Ukraine talks hit 'dead end', Poland warns of risk of war
Putin wants to recreate influence in ex USSR. He stated that in 2002. He tried with soft power, but failed, hence 2008 Georgia 2014 military action in Ukraine.

In his recent easy he claimed Ukrainians and Russians are the same nation

ed_balls··on Russia says Ukraine talks hit 'dead end', Poland warns of risk of war
Because Russia is failing apart. People living in post Soviet sphere see how other countries are developing. Ukraine had higher GDP per capita than Poland - now it's 4x lower. It's true for every single place from Kaliningrad, Caucasus to Vladivostok. They are worse off they their neighbours for purely political reasons.

Only thing that holds everything together is the authoritarian regime with strong military and natural resources. The problem is the world will become less dependant on fossil fuels and mining in Siberia is more expensive than pretty much everywhere. Russia won't be able to pay for the army.

This is an existential treat to the Russian state, hence the war is very likely.

ed_balls··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
sure, but it doesn't have to be U-235 (thorium maybe?). It's more geothermal power plant with fission booster.
ed_balls··on World ocean temperatures in 2021 were the hottest ever recorded
it depends if it's east or west. Chicago is 42o, similar to Madrid, but I think Madrid will have bigger problems.
ed_balls··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
you need to pump water, probably flooding 80% of the mine. Since there are no humans involved 70+ celsius is not a problem.
ed_balls··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
I had a similar idea for repurposing an old mining operation. You take a closed gold, uranium or copper mine which is 1000-2000 meters deep. You create a nuclear rector at the bottom with "fire and forget" design. Only robots can do the maintenance. After 60 years you disable it, pour concrete into the shaft and move to the next location. If it melts, who cares? It's not gonna poison water supply.

Why was this not built before? I have no idea. Maybe robots are essential, we didn't have deep enough mines that were abandoned, energy was cheaper, no push for no emissions, it's not economical, other risks.

ed_balls··on Djokovic's PCR test was manipulated?
This is because Mucosal immunity.
ed_balls··on I found a one-char typo in the docs for Python's typing_extensions library
I'd love if someone could solve the problem with package management in Python. Make Pip Great Again - faster and more stable than poetry. Something like a kickstarter campaign would work. I'd give you money.
ed_balls··on Ask HN: Would you pass an interview for your current position?
There is a strong "inflation" of interviews. Because it's a zero sum game, people try to game it. 8 years ago I was asked 1 medium/2 easy questions, now it's 2 medium/1 hard with follow ups.

Where does it end?

ed_balls··on Omicron at 100% Prevalence, Colorado
> I would hold off on eating oysters for a bit.

why? RNA detected != active virus. e.g. in room temperature, virus can survive the maximum of 5 days (on plastic 3 days, cardboard 24h). It's an impossible vector of transmission.

ed_balls··on Polish opposition duo hacked with NSO spyware
What does it mean "just too far away". It's gonna be much closer than a lot of airports e.g. London Stansted

I do not support any party

ed_balls··on Polish opposition duo hacked with NSO spyware
The Central Airport makes sense. There are 0 big airports in this part of Europe. It could be used by 60mln people (Slovakia, Belarus, Ukraine etc..). It even makes sense for people in Berlin to use it. (Frankfurt - Moscow. 2000km without a big airport)

Besides, you can close down WAW and use the land to expand the city. You also don't have to expand other airports, which are close to cities and cause massive noise pollutions.

ed_balls··on Moderna booster increased neutralizing antibody levels against Omicron ~37-fold
Do you have any source? I couldn't find data that would show it by the age group.

One that I found

Norway

Total vaccinated with mRNA vaccine = 3.765.354

Total myocarditis + pericarditis = 274 (0.0073%)

One case in 13,743

Not published yet https://youtu.be/YdVymGK3OzM?t=1095

ed_balls··on Moderna booster increased neutralizing antibody levels against Omicron ~37-fold
All the restrictions that were imposed in my country hit everybody equally. Which doesn't make sense from the risk reward perspective. For people in age group 0-30 the risk of death is close to zero. For age group 80+ is more than 15%. Orders of magnitude difference. The government tried to do a lock down for 65+, but there was a huge backlash (why they can go out but I cannot?), so the ordinance only said it's a recommendation for 65+ to stay indoors. Only thing they did is "Hours for Seniors". Only 65+ can go to shops in morning hours - 10-12 am, even though it was illegal.

There is a strong argument that boosters are pointless for young people (or even bad due to small myocarditis risk for young males), but politicians are scared of making mandatory vaccinations for 50+ only.

(Based on an interview with a well known sociologist)

ed_balls··on Moderna booster increased neutralizing antibody levels against Omicron ~37-fold
> Wouldn't this mean more deaths or am I missing something? Are COVID deaths in AIDS patients attributed to AIDS not COVID?

That's the thing, it's really hard to compare. There is no standardisation. You can have a person dying from AIDS counted as a COVID death. The other extreme is that someone with AIDS, in theory, could have a COVID infection for decades and be tested n times.

ed_balls··on Moderna booster increased neutralizing antibody levels against Omicron ~37-fold
Sickness from the shot is not my main concern. I'd love to see the whole risk profile for my case. I have a feeling that governments are doing "booster for everybody" for political reasons. They don't want to single out particular age group.
ed_balls··on Moderna booster increased neutralizing antibody levels against Omicron ~37-fold
Meta: Let say I'm 30 years old, healthy, vaccinated with JJ over 6 months ago. Denmark, Sweden, Finland have banned Moderna for younger than 30. Some countries were recommending it to people over 50. Whole communication is a mess.

Should I get a booster shot? What are the pros and cons? Is there any data on that? I asked a friend doctor and she said that I should get a test for antibody count (a lab one, not garbage test you can buy anywhere)

I was quite sick from the last shot so I'd like to avoid it. I probably had Covid in April 2020. (no tests, I had a unusually mild cold-like symptoms and my partner lost the sense of taste for a few days)

Risks (Yes, I know some of them are extremely small)

- Booster won't help with stopping transmission

- myocarditis[1], allergy reaction (boosters are only Pfizer and Moderna, which I haven't taken), driving to and from, catching COVID and other diseases in the walk-in centre.

- I could spread COVID to people in the queue for booster shots, doctors and nurses.

[1]hence the ban it for younger males in some countries.
