yep, but w burn 90% of it and we don't have to.
ed_balls··on US oil lobby launches ad campaign to promote oil as 'vital' to global security
it's more expensive, but they are getting closer. 30+ days by ship vs 10 days by rail, insurance, inflation and other risks. It could be just 2x more expensive. For high and mid added value product it doesn't matter much.

I can imagine year 2060 when there is a magnetic rail link between Asia and Europe. Only some commodities like wheat go through Suez.

ed_balls··on Tesla blamed drivers for failures of parts it long knew were defective
The UX is screw up. My gf's Volvo C30 was show a combination of glow plug light and cabin circulation to indicate that DPF is hot. She only knew because her dad had a lot of Volvo equipment and knew this quirk.

People shouldn't dig the manual for this info.

ed_balls··on Tesla Cybertruck Pricing and Specs
Steer by wire is ok. We had all pedals by wire for ages. Hopefully they won't screw up the implementation again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agMrewRJTow
ed_balls··on Henry Kissinger Has Died
There is zero evidence that Hamas used hospitals for military purposes. Unless you are saying that people use schools to get education and hospitals to get medical treatment, well then yes.
ed_balls··on The Svalbard fibre optic cable connection (2022)
Barents Sea between Norway and Svalbard is quite shallow. It makes monitoring submarines much easier.
ed_balls··on Ask HN: Where can I browse custom GPTs from OpenAI?
I have create a simple pdf extractor https://chat.openai.com/g/g-e3jhasATL-pdf-ninja

Is there a gallery where I can view what other people are building?

ed_balls··on Show HN: Hacker News GPT
Does anyone knows what "coming days" mean? Everybody from OpenAI says "it's enabled for Plus and Enterprise users", but it's not.
ed_balls··on US immigration enforcement used AI-powered tool to scan posts derogatory to US
It's a waste of money at best. People that mean harm would bypass it like 9/11 hijacker which were drunk.

e.g. someone is sharing a post about killing children in Gaza or any other highly controversial topic. Gov employee wastes resources try to check this person, he gets a stressful afternoon. System is prone to abuse and would have a lot of false positives.

From ChatGPT plugins, OCR gives the best results so far.

ed_balls··on Westinghouse/Bechtel Consortium Agreement: First Nuclear Power Plant in Poland
you can shell* the nuclear plant directly for a week and you would still not expose the core.

* regular artillery shells, bunker busing is a different story

ed_balls··on Westinghouse/Bechtel Consortium Agreement: First Nuclear Power Plant in Poland
> Moreover whenever a weapon is used there is a risk of hitting a non-target.

You can load a 747 with explosives and hit AP1000 and would still not destroy it.

Russia could fire 1000+ rockets, drones and cruise missles and it would not cause the next Chernobyl.

ed_balls··on Westinghouse/Bechtel Consortium Agreement: First Nuclear Power Plant in Poland
there are economic reasons (Carbon Tax). What war in Ukraine has proven is that no one is eager to shot at nuclear plants, fuel can even be transported on a plane - no gas pipelines to blow up.

ed_balls··on Electrolyzer efficiently converts CO2 into renewable propane fuel
> will dump in extra fuel under load to ensure the cylinder doesn't melt

They dump extra fuel to prevent knock. It's hard to melt cylinders.

> can't park in an underground garage with LPG

And yet people park. I haven't heard about an accident in the last 5 years. Maybe it could be managed by an extra detector?

LPG engines could be excellent generators (back ups or range extenders for cars and trucks). The emit less particulate matter and NOx.

ed_balls··on Senators to Propose Ban on U.S. Lawmakers, Executive Branch Members Owning Stock
TBH will the regulation change much? If congressmen won't be allow to own stock, they will use proxy (wife, siblings, parents, in-laws).
ed_balls··on To make more stingers, U.S. needs to revive production technology from scratch
yes, but there is only a single line for Honeywell AGT1500, which is a bit ridiculous. There should be a second factory on another continent in case of a natural disaster.
ed_balls··on To make more stingers, U.S. needs to revive production technology from scratch
It seems a join venture it would work well. US needs a backup factory in case of natural disaster, Poland in case of a war.
ed_balls··on Rising Share of U.S. Adults Are Living Without a Spouse or Partner
but if more men don't want to get married, women may not be able to find a suitable partner. Also, there is a gender disparity in location (more men in small towns and SV, more women in NY, LA)
ed_balls··on The EARN IT bill is back. We've killed it twice, let's do it again
