eclipticplane··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
Did you fix any of the underlying numeric limits in the original game?

There's a hard cap to 127 instances of commercial spaces. 128 onward won't get any visitors. Too many office workers will overwhelm your limited commercial spaces and thus leave the tower for lunch, over-taxing your elevators.

And yes - elevators are hard!

My hot take on why these games get popular (including some like PowerWash Simulator that are 'press x, then x again' type games): it gives people satisfaction of completing something in a world that it is increasingly harder to accomplish what the prior generation did.

eclipticplane··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
My secret hope is that this kills the influencer industry and gets things back to just ads. Just the ads happen to be fake people, instead of real people pretending to be ads.
eclipticplane··on Paramount Caught Using 'Astroturf' Group to Drum Up Fake Support for Merger
Now the propaganda is that the anti data center movement is a fake campaign by China.

Which, sure, maybe it's amplified by them but go visit any of these cities public council meetings. People are legit mad about them. Energy prices are already through the roof, they are massive facilities that don't provide much local employment after being built (even the construction crews are contracted in from elsewhere), they get massive tax breaks in exchange for 1 time local development fees, get exempted from noise ordinances, pollution laws, and crammed down communities in backroom deals.

Not hard for foreign adversaries to escalate what's already a terrible deal for the citizens of most cities.

eclipticplane··on WeatherNext 3
> It is built into Apple Weather after Apple purchased them.

Did Apple lobotomize the tech when they integrated it, or lose access to whatever upstream data Dark Sky had access to? Apple Weather is comically bad (though not nearly as bad as Google's weather searches).

eclipticplane··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
Bonus: they might not be able to fund the anti-user behavior like sunsetting MV2, all of the "anonymous audience tracking" that prevents any other advertiser from identifying you (but Google's scale still can), aggressively pushing 'sign in with Google', retracting their stance on blocking third party cookies, continually removing settings that drive user control, and more.
eclipticplane··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
> energy companies giving up wind leases and switching to fossil fuels

If only it were them "giving up" leases -- we *paid them billions* to halt developments.

eclipticplane··on Trade (and Tariffs)
It was _great_ for the companies that collected billions in tariffs and got refunds when the obviously illegal tariffs were declared illegal while training their customers to accept higher prices... that certainly won't go back to pre-tariff levels.
eclipticplane··on U.S. gov't moves to suppress pushback on data centers
Hopefully that 'somebody' that realizes is this US Administration, which to date has paid billions in fees to wind energy companies to not build wind farms. They are quite literally paying companies to not build renewable energy.
eclipticplane··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Does anyone on the other side have a credible plan to undo the damage?

Where's the Project 2028 book?

Is there anyone credible putting together the Executive Orders to undo the stack of shit, is anyone putting together a short list of District Attorneys to interview on January 21, etc?

eclipticplane··on Slack Code
They are some of the most annoying account reps, too.

Somehow they found my personal phone number. I do have my phone number on my Slack profile, so either they found it from external sources or they are able to read our private Slack data.

eclipticplane··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
Carriers and providers don't make this easy, either.

I had a recent doctor's visit, with very good healthcare coverage, that was an in-network facility but an out-of-network provider. Coverage would have kicked in if I had a referral from my PCP, but my PCP recently retired and I was advocating for my own health for a small dermatological issue. They said it was cosmetic, my old PCP said it was not. I got a stack of 10 bills over many months all stating different things -- everything from $0 EOB to over $2k in uncovered expenses. No one would take ownership of sorting out what I was on the hook for. No one I talked to was empowered to actually solve it. It wasn't an affordability problem over $2k (but would be for my elderly grandparents on fixed income). Even asking "If I give you $2k does that resolve the debt?" was answered with "we won't know until we apply the payment" type non-answers.

Burn the whole stack down -or- earn enough you can operate on cash for the tier of care you want. Nothing inbetween seems to be working.

eclipticplane··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
> They are not taking any losses;

Not really accurate if you look at the closure of rural and smaller city healthcare facilities. They don't have the base to charge "regular price" to make up for the aging, less healthy, rural populations.

We all pay for it, but some pay heavier costs than others.

> 2. Hospital spending tons on administrative duties fighting with insurers on coverage, which this would reduce

This layer won't go without a fight. Maybe it _is_ the layer we're fighting against. The owners will still make profit, the providers still have jobs.. but the middle layers are useless bloat. They don't have skills to provide care, they don't operate at the capitalist layer. They are useless today, and even more useless tomorrow.

And that is likely useless layer is millions? of jobs.
