ece··on Anthropic apologizes for invisible Claude Fable guardrails
Neural scaling laws are alive and well for open models, not so much for closed models when it comes to uses the general public might care about.
ece··on Claude Fable 5
No, but open models do along with their architectures, and other technical training details.
ece··on Claude Fable 5
It seems weird that a likely prime indicator of capability isn't mentioned, the model size.
ece··on Brexit Ten Years On: The Economy
I think in this context it would mean not stopping movement of labor to an extreme or having tariffs, but taxing the unequal gains and having social programs that help everyone keep up in an economy.
ece··on Apple made a request to the EC to be exempted from interop obligations under DMA
I hope the EU and DMA succeed in that case, but would also like to point out operating system choices would also help accomplish the same objective of the DMA.
ece··on Apple made a request to the EC to be exempted from interop obligations under DMA
I am for real browser choice, and also for real operating system choice. You can download other photo apps and not use Siri AI if you don't want to. Not sure why you would think this is similar to the browser situation on iOS at least in the USA. I believe alternate browser engines are allowed in the EU now thanks to the DMA.
ece··on Apple made a request to the EC to be exempted from interop obligations under DMA
EU bureaucrats really earning their name here. Maybe they can realize real choice and innovation will come from allowing different operating systems on locked down hardware, instead of this crusade against Siri AI. Something that is easily fixed by downloading literally any other AI or agentic photo/video/whatever app.
ece··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
I've upgraded my desktops more with GPUs and power supplies accordingly, but old laptop SSDs make fine backup enclosure drives (no I haven't seen them lose data when unplugged) and upgrading RAM for larger models on a AMD Zen 2 laptop worked pretty great for me. None of these were needed, they were just nice to be able to do mostly before the higher RAM prices started.
ece··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
Let me guess, no upgrades either.
ece··on IXI's autofocusing lenses are almost ready to replace multifocal glasses
I wonder how long the wait will be for AR glasses to have this option too.
ece··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
I would like Framework to have a keyboard with normal size arrow keys. That is all.
ece··on SpaceX launches Starship v3 rocket
I am genuinely curious what causes the different colors of plasma that were visible throughout the descent. I saw at least purple, yellow, and shades of green.

ece··on How to Write to SSDs [pdf]
There seems to be more details about the Linux implementation here: https://zonedstorage.io/
ece··on Microscale Thermite Reaction
This clearly calls for thermite petanque.
ece··on The hypocrisy of cyberlibertarianism
The congressional technology committee Gingrich killed could've fixed this. You can't half ass democracy, you have to keep getting better at governing and convince people it's worth it.
ece··on Wi is Fi: Understanding Wi-Fi 4/5/6/6E/7/8 (802.11 n/AC/ax/be/bn)
Informative page, but the most common speeds with 2x2 MIMO probably were (in Mbps):

Far (QPSK) 4(20Mhz)/5(80Mhz)/6(160Mhz)/7(320Mhz): 28.8/130/288.23/576.47

Near (64QAM) 4(20Mhz)/5(80Mhz)/6(160Mhz)/7(320Mhz): 144.4/650/1,441.17/2,882.35

Not bad for throughput increases, though most of the increases come from more spectrum, and the reliability comes from more MIMO antennas/streams. I've had WiFi 4/5 2x2 routers and something tells me I won't see much more than what's listed above for 7. Buying a 4x4 does get you a generation of throughput in advance pretty much, if you need it.

ece··on Wi is Fi: Understanding Wi-Fi 4/5/6/6E/7/8 (802.11 n/AC/ax/be/bn)
What are the chances of a 3x3 or 4x4 router from them I wonder.
ece··on Ads on Apple Maps
There are two types of context-based ads IMO, with one context being that of the user, and the other of the things they are doing, Apple has clearly just refused to make the distinction.

Reading a website about cheese, show me a cheese-related ad, viewing the map of my neighborhood, show me neighborhood related ads, no need to get my location for any of it. These are things that a server already knows it served you, a website and a map.

ece··on How far behind is each major Chromium browser?
qutebrowser would be nice too.
ece··on How far behind is each major Chromium browser?
Vivaldi does minor releases as needed for security and bugs, so saying 1 major version behind is a bit coarse.

ece··on US Supreme Court reviews police use of cell location data
He does have his Kavanaugh stop legacy to uphold.
ece··on Is my blue your blue?
I got hue 175 twice, but bluer than 66% of the population once and 59% the second time.
ece··on US Supreme Court reviews police use of cell location data
Only two of these companies actually needs your location data to function, it's Uber and Lyft. There's a reasonable case telcos might also need the data for network purposes, but cell tower data isn't going to be as accurate as GPS. It's safe to say everyone else is basically collecting data for serving ads even if they say otherwise.

The opposite of dragnet surveillance, which is what flock and geofencing warrants are: data aggregated and shared without the consent of the user, is data collection minimization even when done for security or apps.

ece··on Sergey Brin Confronted Gavin Newsom
Not only this, but a person with this much wealth cannot possibly consume enough to pay their fair share in taxes. They've already used all the loopholes to avoid income taxes which aren't even progressive for billionaires as mentioned by Buffet.
ece··on Sergey Brin Confronted Gavin Newsom
The billionaire mind virus might be contagious.
ece··on Sergey Brin Confronted Gavin Newsom
Apparently they didn't go very far.
ece··on Making RAM at Home [video]
I'm all for safer and less error prone processes, if there is a conductive ink safe for home use, just sell me a 3D printer that does it.
ece··on Making RAM at Home [video]
I visited a pcb making factory once. Left with an appreciation for the amount of work needed for 80-layer pcbs, and knowing I would not want to deal with making them myself.
