eccp··on Commenting Code Properly
Don't use regexes to parse HTML, use BeautifulSoup instead. Also, don't use "brogrammer" style comments, they are not funny enough.
eccp··on The future of Ubuntu revealed
I just replied to this on Ask Ubuntu (including screenshots). You can reduce the padding a bit with a .gtkrc file and/or custom GTK themes. This and some font-tweaking on the same file should be good enough.
eccp··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (October 2012)
SEEKING WORK - Remote from Chile (part-time or full-time)

I'm a full-stack developer with 8+ years of experience on the Java platform. In recent years I've moved myself from traditional Java EE to Spring, then worked with Groovy/Grails and more recently Ruby on Rails and some Node.js. I'm also comfortable with Python, JavaScript and recently I've started learning Clojure.

Please check my profile for contact info and links to Github repos.

eccp··on Linus Torvalds on the Linux desktop's popularity problems
Honestly, this is not an option for everyone.

It's much cheaper to give your parents your old PC or laptop with an updated distro (say, Ubuntu) and forget about viruses, etc. They usually get most of their needs from the web (eg. webmail, facebook, etc.) and you can SSH in the event they actually need to install anything.

If you are a developer, it's very likely your old PC or laptop will be good enough for their needs.

eccp··on Ask HN: suggested sweet laptops for running Ubuntu?
Dell Inspiron N4050 here, running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit. Everything works as expected, great performance for the price.
eccp··on The challenges of Desktop Linux
To all people complaining about unstable apps, poor performance and buggy drivers: I purchased my last laptop from Dell because I was aware it was well supported on Ubuntu.

This alone makes a huge difference, trying to install Mac OS X on a frankenmac will result in an troublesome experience too.

Doing your own transition to free software is also a key for success, and if you're not tied to a proprietary technology, you should try it. I've been a full-time Ubuntu user for 5+ years, working as a developer using Java, Ruby or Python, and I'm very satisfied. Even further, when I had to use Windows 7 or even Mac OS X it feels odd.

eccp··on The 32 startups that will present at Start-Up Chile Demo Day
The link is broken on the English version. If you go to http://www.demodaychile.com/ click on "Inscríbete para participar" (register to participate).
eccp··on Poll: Which text editor do you use daily?
I mostly use Emacs for development. Vim for small edits on the console, sometimes I open gEdit to read plain text files when I'm not coding. On Windows (under Virtualbox or on remote servers) I tend to use Noteapad++. I don't use much Eclipse these days except for a few touches to an Android project.
eccp··on Why I will use Java EE instead of Spring in new Enterprise Java Projects in 2012
Use none of them, try Grails or JRuby. Really.
eccp··on Ask HN: Did you learn a language this year?
Coming from a Java and Grails background, I debuted as a Rails developer this year and was very impressed by Ruby and the framework too. Also tried some basic Clojure, solved most of the Clojure koans and solved 48 problems (so far) on 4Clojure.com ... I'd love to learn more and build something with it on 2012.
eccp··on Python Ecosystem - An Introduction
Great article. Is it just me or the prepend/append examples are swapped? ie. If you want to append TO your PYTHONPATH you should do PYTHONPATH=$PYTHONPATH:/some/new/path
eccp··on Profanity and OS projects - should we care?
Source code is not only about the implementation, but also about the approach of the developers to express a solution to a problem. If swearing is part of that expression, it's OK to me, but I agree that unneccesary swearing, and being offensive to a certain group or demographic should be avoided at all.

eccp··on Ask HN: What are your music prototyping solutions?
+1 for Renoise. I've heard some awesome compositions made on it, and it's the natural evolution of demoscene trackers. For a sample, see the following video with the track 'Leandi' by Mosaik (a fairly known demoscene musician): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N-f4sSU75I
eccp··on Start-Up Chile is a Great Experience But Be Careful Too
BTW ... do you keep the job offers up to date? I'm Chilean and interested on joining a startup but I'm not sure if the offers published on www.startupchile.org/joinastartup/ are up to date or not.
eccp··on Average age of Lisp learners?
I'm 35 and I'm learning Clojure these days after many years on Java and web programming (JavaScript and now mostly Groovy and Grails). When I was on the University I had one class which included programming in Scheme. I absolutely hated it at that time, so I skipped it completely. Now I regret it :-) ... Clojure is a good alternative for me, feels much closer to what I already know (JVM-based languages).
eccp··on Interact with git from python
I use this Python library to build a plug-in for gEdit which shows you the git branch of the file being edited.

eccp··on Ask HN: Is there software for building software?
Glom looks promising too: http://www.glom.org/
eccp··on Ask HN: Enterprise Java guy needs advice on what to transition to
I'm walking the same road, been working on the Java platform for 8+ years. The recent trend of new languages on top of the JVM is really exciting, so you have several options to investigate without trowing away all your existing Java knowledge.

Groovy + Grails is a great platform and it feels like a grasp of fresh air, but there is also Clojure (with an emerging ecosystem), JRuby (and you can run Rails on it), Jython and Scala to name a few other options.

eccp··on Poll: What is your primary development system? Mac, PC, Linux, Other
Ubuntu 10.10, Windows XP on VirtualBox when needed
eccp··on Ask HN: Depression, Loss of Motivation, Feeling Lost. Please Help
I think it's much more common than what you may think.

I've passed through a similar phase when I was at the university long ago, too much partying, alcohol and lots of junk food. Drink water and try to exercise and achieve small goals (say, add two or five more minutes of running for session each week) and involve in another type of activities to give you some relief from stress without trashing your body.

Also, talk to other people/real friends about how you feel or seek counseling.

eccp··on Ask HN: Site from scratch or frameworks?
Also, if you need help at some stage, it's much easier to find someone with some knowledge on a framework (say, Symphony, since he built in PHP) than having to train that person into your framework and then the thoughts behind your application/idea.
eccp··on Coca Cola's secret recipe revealed?
Exactly. My dad is a chemist and he mentioned this to me: it's not hard to 'reverse engineer' the formula. You can iterate until the results of the spectrometer from the original coke and your invented formula are close enough.

Good luck with trying to sell and distribute at competing prices with The Coca Cola company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Coca_Cola_Company#Lobbying)

eccp··on Stop Imposing Programming Languages On Kids
In the spirit of letting kids curiosity flow, they can have a great time just by tweaking already existing games. In Scratch, they can open any of the existing examples, play around, change some numbers or images, play again and see the effects of their changes.

I have a 10 y/o girl and she's learning Python (we're following the Hello World book - www.helloworldbook.com) and it's fun to follow, and she enjoys seeing the effects of the changes in the programs to see if they still behave as she expects them to.

I think it's much more important to observe that pattern rather than just discarding a particular language just because it may fix a specific mindset.

eccp··on Poll: Do you click on advertising?
I do. If I visit an anime fansub site or tracker, sometimes I click on the ads just to help the guys to pay their hosting or to say 'thanks for your effort', without actually wiring them some money from my own pocket.
eccp··on Poll: How often do you visit HN?
Actually I check HN via Google Reader, and I open the actual page only when [I think] the discussion around a link may interest me.
eccp··on Ask HN: Best way to introduce a young girl to computers?
I second Scratch, it comes with a lot of examples which she can tweak, so she can explore changing settings. It's very intuitive, my daughter liked it a lot. It's available on Win, Mac and Linux too (on Ubuntu you need to install the squeak package first).
eccp··on Ubuntu, Ruby, RVM, Rails, and You
I think the same way, I would expect something like the following from a book author: "Since we're going to install Rails 3 which is newer than the version packaged/available in Ubuntu 10.10, we will do a separate install which is not compatible with the package manager, etc."
