ebbi··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
These trite replies also worked 20 years ago, but not today.

People that have read history know your assertion - vaguely suggesting it was the Palestinians that rejected many peace deals - know that this is completely false.

Please do tell why an Israeli Prime Minister was assassinated?

Did not know that!

Might check it out. Thanks for letting me know. But really been enjoying Analogue lately.

ebbi··on Show HN: iPhone app takes simultaneous images from 2 lenses, fuses into 1 photo
They just released a major update, but it's not something I would pay a subscription for. I paid the lifetime fee in it's early days, but that doesn't unlock the new updates sadly.

I use Analogue for day to day capture, and NoFusion and Moment apps for things I will want to edit later. All with one-time purchase. I don't mind paying for quality apps, but I do have subscription fatigue now.

> So this is just producing a single photo that is clearer in a middle rectangle and blurrier outside that rectangle?

Yeah that looks to be the case. Not sure what use case this solves with that 'limitation'. I don't think photographers would particularly like this.

ebbi··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
The common talking points online are that it's solely from one ethnic group. Not sure if you have read Rupert Lowe's report, but it was explicitly framed around a particular ethnoreligious pattern of offending - especially men of Pakistani Muslim background, and it repeatedly connected that pattern to immigration and multiculturalism.

And that report has further driven the narrative online that it is solely an immigrant problem.

ebbi··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
TBF they are real, but are they isolated to one ethnic group? No. Are the victims as numerous as Rupert Lowe's report makes it out to be? No.

ebbi··on 'Crush this lady': how eBay harassment campaign led to $56M payout
I just can't fathom how employees of a company would do all this because someone with a newsletter criticized the company often.

I understand employees committing fraud for their own gain. I don't understand Directors and analysts doing this to someone, especially when senior execs weren't charged. Seems like there were a lot of cover ups going on.

ebbi··on Microsoft raises Xbox prices by up to 43%
I recently purchased an Xbox Series S for ~NZD$180 to re-play GTA4 (and Episodes) as I never got to finish it when it first came out, and to get through all the GTAs before GTA6 comes out.

512GB Series S consoles in NZ are now retailing for close to $1,000. Might have an appreciating asset on my hands!

ebbi··on Samsung reveals Galaxy Z Fold 8 that will compete with the iPhone Ultra
It probably could. Wait till the 3rd generation where it will eventually end up growing in size such that unfolded it'll be equivalent in size to an 11" iPad.

I already remote into my Mac from my iPad using Mirage by Ethan Lipnik. Would be amazing being able to do that from an iPhone foldable!

ebbi··on I'd not buy a LG monitor
I think there's a software route you can go, but I went the hardware route. Essentially requires opening up the iMac, gutting out all the internals, and replacing it with a display driver board (from AliExpress, eBay, etc).

The display driver board has various inputs like HDMI, Thunderbolt, USB-C etc so it ends up acting like any other external monitor. It has a remote you control the brightness/contrast etc settings.

I've got my Mac and PS5 hooked up to it. Love it!

ebbi··on I'd not buy a LG monitor
Best thing I've done - monitor wise - is buy a 2019 iMac 5k and convert it to work as an external display. Such a beautiful display. Only downside is once you go 5k it's very hard to go back to any lower resolution. I ended up converting a (much cheaper) 2015 iMac 5k for use in the office.
ebbi··on Samsung reveals Galaxy Z Fold 8 that will compete with the iPhone Ultra
I think the iPhone's one (based on the leaks anyway) will be slightly smaller, but I still think it's going to be a popular device. Especially with Apple's experience from iPad OS, it's going to be like two devices in one.
ebbi··on Samsung reveals Galaxy Z Fold 8 that will compete with the iPhone Ultra
Yeah, initially my skepticism was around the fact that the front screen wouldn't be useful for day-to-day 'normal' smartphone things (messaging, scrolling X etc), and the inner screen would be too small for any of the 'tablet' benefits.

But the reviews seem to suggest the front screen is actually very usable, and you get back some of the old smartphone one hand reachability, and the inner screen looks very versatile for media and side by side apps.

ebbi··on Samsung reveals Galaxy Z Fold 8 that will compete with the iPhone Ultra
I was a bit skeptical on this form factor, but after watching a few reviews I think I'm convinced. The heart says yes, bank balance says definitely no.

I think with Apple's software optimization, it'll be a really solid device. The only thing I'd be missing are the Pro level cameras.

ebbi··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
Yeah, I started watching those videos with uncontrollable rage to thinking about how can society change things to avoid/minimize this.
ebbi··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
I can't reply with stats, but I sometimes get in a bit of a loop watching the 'pred vs catcher' videos on social media.

After having watched what would probably be hundreds (across the US and UK), you start to see some patterns on offenders:

- The ones that are obviously mentally ill/brain development issues - they're adults but act and talk like a child. With some of the interactions with this cohort, some/many don't even realise what they're doing is wrong.

- The ones that seem ok from a developmental perspective, but are physically undesirable from societal norms and don't have a legal outlet - whether that's because of looks/weight/age/disabilities etc. This is where you see many old married men - probably not being fulfilled at home.

- The ones that have a fetish for a type and will go to any lengths after not being able to fulfil this legally (this is where, I think, immigrants over-index: they have a fetish for 'white' women, and can't fulfil their desires legally, so try with the most vulnerable)

- The ones that seem mentally and physically ok, but you can glean from their interactions that they are cold-blooded, ruthless, know what they're doing is wrong. These are the ones that take many calculated steps to cover their trails. When caught, they show barely any regret, and when they do, it's only regret because they were caught.

Then obviously I think there's a class of them that don't come up on these sites, but we can get a glimpse of it from the likes of the Epstein files. The rich. The famous. The ones that think they can do whatever they want. How pervasive this is in society is anyone's guess, but it seems like there is a dark underworld for this class. A Netflix documentary comes to mind about two boys who were trafficked by their parents to wealthy elites in the UK.

Obviously what differentiates all of these to people that may sit in one of those cohorts but don't resort to this despicable behavior is some underlying predisposition to predatory behavior.

ebbi··on Bananas sprout in Rayleigh Garden UK after 15 years
Slightly off-topic:

When I used to eat banana-flavored things (milkshakes, chocolate bars, etc), I always thought that the flavor was artifically inflated and tasted nothing like an actual banana...

...until I went to Fiji. Externally, the appearance of the banana would probably render it as waste in Western countries as it doesn't look nice and yellow - and looks close to what an overripe/rotten banana looks like, but gosh they tasted amazing!

ebbi··on Economists say 'we must act now' on AI's economic impact and job displacement
Because you're assuming the people on the top have liquid assets needed to sustain themselves. They would need the economy to be operating and funds flowing into their accounts via their businesses/holdings.

And these investments you talk about - they'll just be even more concentration of wealth than what we see today, especially with these more advanced AI systems and robots, not needing to hire as many people for the same output.

Why would Chase loan out money to someone that doesn't have a job, because the above AI systems/robots are now doing those jobs for the capitalists?

William Dalrymple's books are great reads. Makes reading history enjoyable. Highly recommend all his books, particularly his most recent 'The Golden Road'
ebbi··on Economists say 'we must act now' on AI's economic impact and job displacement
I've been pondering this, and have been moving between cynicism and (cautious) optimism.

I think there will be more action on this than climate change, only because the AI impact will have a more immediate, direct impact on politicians.

One thing I can't get my head around is the promise that AI will make everyone better off. If AI is taking peoples jobs, that will lead to more people unemployed, which will lead to more people not being able to purchase goods that ultimately benefit the rich who have large amounts of influence on politicians.

Once this impact starts to hurt the people that has influence, we will start to see some action.

Climate change is something that won't impact many of today's leaders for too long, so the can is constantly kicked down the road.
