I'm simply what the Spanish would call a breadstick.

Perhaps not precisely what you’re asking, but there are simple ways to download the Kindle books that you paid good money for, and decrypt them to plain ePub or PDF using Calibre.

ebb_earl_co··on Ask HN: What podcasts do you listen to?
The only podcast I make sure to keep up with is Making Sense with Sam Harris [0]

ebb_earl_co··on New AWS service lets customers rent Nvidia GPUs for quick AI projects
This is good news if the price isn’t outrageous: I live in Denver, and their lowest-spec Local Zone instance was $300 per year as the Free Tier-eligible instances aren’t available in Denver Local Zone. So, I’ve soured a bit on AWS…

However, I have been wanting to throw Whisper at some podcast episodes, especially Whisper-X (or another that does speaker diarization at the same time as transcription), but I don’t have an nVIDIA card of any kind.

ebb_earl_co··on Signal: No evidence that 0day is real
I went digging for information on this because somewhere in my mind this claim was installed as true, but your skepticism re-activated my skepticism.

It seems that the Matrix protocol offers optional end-to-end encryption on a room-by-room basis via Double Ratchet Algorithm that was introduced by the Signal Protocol [0]. This is the academic paper that Wikipedia cites for that claim [1].

ebb_earl_co··on Spotify code suggests HiFi tier is coming with lossless audio for $20 / month
Really? Is there any way to download these? Because there’s a Python project to download the .m4a files containing the EAC-3 codec from Tidal that interests me the most.
ebb_earl_co··on Spotify code suggests HiFi tier is coming with lossless audio for $20 / month
Most of ODESZA’s discography is in Dolby Atmos and it is sumptuous. Also, my favorite pianist, Ludovico Einaudi, has his Underwater album in 5.1. Tidal offers hundreds, but I only have about a dozen downloaded.
ebb_earl_co··on Spotify code suggests HiFi tier is coming with lossless audio for $20 / month
I pay for Tidal’s highest tier because you can get a fairly high number of albums in Dolby Atmos which sounds great at home and even the AirPods Pro will do their spatial audio thing with 5.1-channel tracks. It’s not surprising that I can hear a difference in this situation, I suppose.

ebb_earl_co··on Yark: Advanced and easy YouTube archiver now stable
What kind of hardware do you have that makes it feasible to process thousands of hours of podcasts? I want to do the same but I’ve heard that Whisper requires some serious GPU might for decent accuracy (Linux Unplugged podcast specifically).
ebb_earl_co··on An extensive tutorial on how to setup a Pi-Hole
I take your point. But how do you power this travel router? Also, does it have a 4G/LTE/5G SIM card? Otherwise, what is its modem; i.e. how does it route?
ebb_earl_co··on Intel Enables ECC Memory on Consumer Alder Lake CPUs
“"12th Generation Core processors support ECC when paired with W680 platforms. In fact, even enthusiast-grade Core i9-12900K gains ECC support when paired with W680." - Intel spokesperson.” This is a bit confusing: why single out the i9-12900K? The way that sentence follows the first, it seems that it is the only CPU that will gain ECC support.

These are good points. I would only add that the phrase is “line of sight”
ebb_earl_co··on San Francisco decriminalizes psychedelics
I think that one at least passable reason for just the “natural” substances to be focused on is to bring religious people under the big tent of eventual psychedelic legalization. Leaning on arguments such as God wouldn’t have made the substance if He didn’t want us to use it resonates with a lot of potential allies to the overall psychedelic legalization cause.

A second reason comes from the group Decriminalize Nature [0] in their resolution to the Oakland City Council when pushing for decriminalization there[1]: “…reestablish humans’ inalienable and direct relationship to nature.” That is, some have this explicit goal and might not care much for the synthesized psychedelics.

ebb_earl_co··on Psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy vs. placebo in treatment of alcohol disorder
I think that this is correct. I don’t remember the name of the person, but he explained that MDMA is useful for treating PTSD because it lets the patient have enough mental “energy” or wherewithal to revisit the trauma and not be overwhelmed. So it’s the—in some sense—safe revisiting of the trauma that is therapeutic.
ebb_earl_co··on Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms: a double-blind placebo-controlled study
If you live in Canada, and specifically in Vancouver, there are de facto legal operating dispensaries for psilocybin [0]. If you don't live there, but live in the USA, some of said shops will ship products to USA. Now, I don't know if this hits your threshold for "safe", but seeing as the doses involved are quite low, one could argue that it would be safer than, say, starting a new (SSRI) antidepressant if you take into account long-term effects [1], side-effects, etc [2].

ebb_earl_co··on The video game prescribed by doctors to treat ADHD
I first heard about this when Sam Harris interviewed Adam Gazzaley[0] who is a co-founder of the company producing this game. I was thoroughly impressed by him, especially because of how novel this treatment idea is.

ebb_earl_co··on Ask HN: How many of you delibrately wear a watch that isn't a smart watch?
I wear a Citizen Eco-Drive with blue Roman numerals on a white face. It was a gift for my having finished undergraduate and I wear it almost every day.
ebb_earl_co··on Ask HN: Which book would you pick to re-read for the rest of your life?
Sam Harris’ Waking Up. I’m sure that some of the neuroscience in it will become outdated, but its effect on my worldview and life trajectory can’t be understated.

Perhaps this is apocryphal, but when Richard Feynman was asked what one sentence would contain the most information to bootstrap science after apocalypse, he said “everything is made of atoms”. Sam Harris parallels this with his one sentence for spiritual practice: “you are not this next thought”.

Being reminded of this annually by way of the excellent exposition of Waking Up seems to be the right move for me.

ebb_earl_co··on Ask HN: Is your company giving you a holiday for Juneteenth?
Yes, Monday is a company holiday for Albertsons Companies.
ebb_earl_co··on The Psychedelic Experience: A new concept in psychotherapy (1962) [pdf]
I think that it was Michael Pollan in an interview or in his book "How to Change Your Mind" who said that the principal reason is that a psilocybin trip can fit in the working day of a therapist/guide/researcher, whereas a typical LSD trip can last a dozen hours or more.
ebb_earl_co··on Ask HN: What do you think is all this? (this reality, existence, space-time, us)
This is a great amount of references, thank you for providing the next week of research for me :)
ebb_earl_co··on Ask HN: Why are some soundtracks of movies so powerful?
I see that you’ve named your playlist “flow state” so you might like the Flow State[0] “podcast” on Spotify. It is classified as such, but is really a playlist timed to the pomodoro method in which the author speaks about the science of flow state during the pomodoro breaks.

ebb_earl_co··on Is studying in Germany really free?
Interesting. What university did you attend? Which university would you recommend for a person living in USA that I suppose would be the “most” English-oriented?
ebb_earl_co··on Ask HN: What book changed your life?
Sam Harris' Waking Up. My time on Earth is best partitioned into before and after I started the project of spirituality without religion (the book's subtitle).
