easywood··on Running Windows 98 in the Browser
Bonus points for including sheep.exe. That was a welcome trip down memory lane.
easywood··on Microservices aren't the problem. Incompetent people are
Just from the title, I can deduce the article is based on a logical error. There will ALWAYS be incompetent people involved in any solution. So if solution X fails because of incompetent people, but solution Y succeeds, then solution Y must be better. The same goes for the disclaimer at the end, "it's actually about incompetence across organisations", you will always have that.
easywood··on Bricklaying robots can now build tennis-court-sized walls in 4 hours
Building glue is not magical and it's widely used, at least in western Europe. Glue is rapidly replacing mortar (just not for foundation and facade stone). Also, it dries a lot quicker than 45 minutes. A builder doesn't have to wait at all to add additional layers. And at the end of the workday, you just drop you glue gun, no need for lengthy cleanup of everything used to make mortar.
easywood··on ASK HN: What’s a small thing you’ve purchased which has made your life better?
lively household -> public libary?
easywood··on 99% of top Python packages are now wheels
You're completely right. The site doesn't even bother to explain what "eggs" are. And while it lists the benefits of wheels, there is no word about the apparent downsides of eggs, or maybe a little comparison table.
easywood··on Gen Z are turning to delusional thinking to cope
Unfortunately the level of knowledge on the subject is quite apparent when somebody speaks about "the" European healthcare. I'm sure the doctors spoke European too.
easywood··on visionOS
That's the best thing about standards, you have so many to choose from.
easywood··on De-Stressing Booking.com (2019)
In several European countries, that's really not hard to find online: https://www.reuters.com/article/booking-hldg-hungary-idINL5N... https://www.politico.eu/article/dutch-privacy-watchdog-fines...
easywood··on I fixed a parasitic drain on my car in 408 days
Second opinion from someone in a 25 year marriage: do not move to a different partner over a disagreement on onions. You'll be moving a lot.
easywood··on Mercedes-Benz previews its operating system MB.OS
Awesome, a real world example of the phonograph-destroying record from the book "Gödel, Escher, Bach" ! What a time to be alive! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6del,_Escher,_Bach
easywood··on Streetlights Are Turning Purple
After clickbait headlines, now readbait articles.
easywood··on Ask HN: Do you recall any book or course that made a topic finally click?
Keep it simple. My inbox only contains mails that require an action at some time. If I have done this action, I immediately archive the mail. I often mail todo's to myself so I have only one place for todo's. If I have to do something on a specific time, I put it in my online agenda. I have a separate setup for work and private, that's it. This works great.
easywood··on “When we all have pocket telephones”
It smells terrible!
easywood··on Ask HN: What is your fav “I can't believe in 2022 this still doesn't work right”
You mean printers, right? Everything about them?
easywood··on Half of Japan's LDP lawmakers had ties with Unification Church
It's a euphemism for suicide.
easywood··on Jailer – Data Browsing
I also wondered what databases this tools supported. Java or JDBC is not mentioned in a place I could find. A shame, really. I understand developers prefer development over documentation, but this is underselling it a bit.
easywood··on World War III has already started – Gary Kasparov
”Putin is not afraid to use nukes so just attack him already, what are you waiting for?” To me this proves that a grandmaster in chess is not by default a grandmaster in strategy.
easywood··on Ask HN: What was better in the past in tech?
>> Software used to not hide all the options to "protect me from myself". I agree this is not for for us power users. However - ten years ago I was the free pc support for extended family and distant friends. Constantly removing 5 toolbars from IE and all sorts of adware, spyware, pre-installed crap ... Now it's years ago I had to resolve anything. So at least this "protecting people from themselves" is really working out great.
easywood··on How the modern world arose from imaginary numbers
>> You can have 5 rocks destroyed in the future You have 5 rocks now, and zero rocks in the future. At no point are there negative rock-shaped holes in the fabric of space. The parent's comment still stands, he is talking about reality, not our mathematical interpretation of it.
easywood··on The Future Is Getting Farther Away

easywood··on We've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Exoplanet building its own moons
I remember a scientific book that said: "we will never know if exoplanets exist because they are simply too far away to see them". So be careful what you write.
easywood··on Eric Weinstein Says He Solved the Universe’s Mysteries. Scientists Disagree
Would someone care to write an ELI5 about this? It sounds revolutionary but I just can't get my head around what he's actually saying.
easywood··on The No-Code Generation is arriving
Seriously, who is writing these articles? I've seen this kind of thing come and go since the last 20 years.

But this time it's different! No it is'nt.

easywood··on Hum to Search Song
DAMMIT IT WORKS!!! Just found David's song from the Kelly family. In my memory I always though it was an Asian song or something :-) Now this is the kind of progress I like to see in technology. It's about time I'm getting something out of living in the future.
