Hi! I graduated college and now have a job doing computery stuff (.NET! AWS! Buzzword-of-the-week!)

I'm always interested in cool stuff! e-mail me at easton (at) planeteaston.com

easton··on How Charles M Schulz created Charlie Brown and Snoopy (2024)
They used to (a year or two ago?) host them for free so you didn’t need a sub, is that no longer true?

(Sucks about the pbs part though, didn’t realize they’d stopped that.)

easton··on Memories of .us
My high school is still at www-bths.stjohns.k12.fl.us, and if it wasn’t embedded in my fingertips from working IT there I’d have no idea how anyone is supposed to remember it.
easton··on Report: Tim Cook could step down as Apple CEO 'as soon as next year'
Did you try cleaning the lightning port out with a toothpick or something? Mine was full of lint and now it works like new.
easton··on AWS deprecates two dozen services (most of which you've never heard of)
It’s definitely fine for a while, it’s the closest thing they have to an internal chatbot product and they need that to sell enterprises on adopting AWS.
easton··on Yt-dlp: External JavaScript runtime now required for full YouTube support
I think these days yt-dlp is possible because they're relying on the infra YouTube has for their TV apps, which are html5 (ish) browser apps. so they'd also have to dedicate time to building native apps for every TV in existence, even if youtube.com went away.
easton··on I took all my projects off the cloud, saving thousands of dollars
That's interesting. Except for $GIGANTIC_CO (like, BofA, or the government), i'd expect a SLA that describes service resiliency and not "well, our service will be up because we're on AWS".

Why would you need to disclose your hosting provider? is that really a concern for hosted services (and if it is, why isn't the customer hosting it in their cloud?)

easton··on OpenAI signs $38B cloud computing deal with Amazon
Last week's Microsoft deal said Azure was still exclusive: https://openai.com/index/next-chapter-of-microsoft-openai-pa...

But that feels weird combined with this. You can buy OpenAI API access which is served off of AWS infrastructure, but you can't bill for it through AWS? (I mean, lots of companies work like that. but Microsoft is betting that a lot of people move regular workloads to Azure so they can have centralized billing for inference and their other stuff?)

easton··on More than DNS: Learnings from the 14 hour AWS outage
They used to do that (so that everyone picking 1a wouldn’t actually route traffic to the same az), but at some point they made it so all new accounts had the same AZ labels to stop confusing people.

The services that fail on AWS’ side are usually multi zone failures anyway, so maybe it wouldn’t help.

I’ve often wondered why they don’t make a secret region just for themselves to isolate the control plane but maybe they think dogfooding us-east-1 is important (it probably wouldn’t help much anyway, a meteor could just as easily strike us-secret-1).

easton··on Cursor 2.0
This page transferred well over 200MB of video before I stopped it, just FYI.
easton··on 1X Neo – Home Robot - Pre Order
> For any chore it doesn’t know, you can schedule a 1X Expert to guide it, helping NEO learn while getting the job done.

Is this a humanoid robot that's controlled by someone in a call center remotely doing your laundry?

Putting aside ethical reservations about how much they are probably paying per task, that feels like wash and fold with extra steps.

easton··on The next chapter of the Microsoft–OpenAI partnership
They also say "Non-API products may be served on any cloud provider.". I wonder what products they are thinking about. If I sell you a EC2 image with GPT-5 on it, is that a API?

My assumption is that they mean PaaS model hosting (so azure's ai service, bedrock, vertex), but I don't know what other product OpenAI is thinking about selling via a cloud provider unless it's training tooling or something.

easton··on Smartphones manipulate our emotions and trigger our reflexes
And the Replicator was locked out from producing mass amounts of unhealthy food (unless you told it not to).

Maybe the lesson we should learn is our hardware should come with built in limits on use to keep our brains intact? That sounds dystopian.

easton··on Today is when the Amazon brain drain sent AWS down the spout
If their internal NLB monitoring can delete the A record for dynamodb that seems like a weird dependency (like, i can imagine the nlb going missing entirely can cause it to clean up via some weird orchestration, but this didn't sound like that).
easton··on The MacBook Air 2025 Is Now Cheaper Than a Random Mid-Range Windows Laptop
weirdly, i've done the repair on one of the previous X1 generations. It was a pain to disassemble most of the machine (~2 hours?) but it was at least doable. i don't think you can do it on a Mac at all?
easton··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
The support apis only exist in us-east-1, iirc. It’s a “global” service like IAM, but that usually means modifications to things have to go through us-east-1 even if they let you pull the data out elsewhere.
easton··on AWS Service Availability Updates
At least it’s not S3 triggers for lambdas, just about gave me a heart attack.
easton··on What .NET 10 GC changes mean for developers
I think they meant most people aren’t building a high performance spreadsheet, not most people aren’t using a high performance spreadsheet.
easton··on You did this with an AI and you do not understand what you're doing here
Two dashes on the Mac or iOS do it unless you explicitly disable it, I think.
easton··on Node 20 will be deprecated on GitHub Actions runners
> Why would I care whether the Node runner has a security vulnerability?

I’m guessing they know you don’t care, but the big company customers cant have a CVE anywhere and won’t accept a EOL node version so they can check a box on something.

(I guess there’s also people with self hosted runners, who might be running them inside networks that aren’t segmented.)

easton··on Midcentury North American Restaurant Placemats
Until this point I didn't know Big Tex was real and not just something in King of the Hill. And I've been to Texas!

Guess it's time to go back.

easton··on Waymo has received our pilot permit allowing for commercial operations at SFO
You can BART from there to downtown, that beats a lot of cities. (yes, yes, BART quality can vary, but still.)
easton··on Tesla market share in US drops to lowest since 2017
There’s a capacitive button on the newer steering wheels.
easton··on Light Sleep: Waking VMs in 200ms with eBPF and snapshots
I would kill for this as a AWS service, but I admit all my use cases are around being too frugal to pay for the time it takes to initialize a EC2 instance from zero (like CI workers where I don’t want to pay when idle but also the task could possibly run longer than the lambda timeout).
easton··on Running our Docker registry on-prem with Harbor
Do they? If all this is in their DC then it’s going over their wires, unless their colo provider somehow had visibility into their traffic (which I’d guess they don’t).
easton··on How to free up and automatically manage disk space for WSL
You can turn off effects to restore amazing performance (I know on the Mac version it’s the “optimize for retina displays” option).

easton··on Monday – A personality experiment
I'd need to mess with it more. The model redacted the tool call info itself (i deleted the comment it made to that effect).

...probably should just assume the other comment is more correct.

easton··on Do things that don't scale, and then don't scale
> It would grab the photo, grab the caption, and send it through a direct mail API to my mom.

Anyone know what API they are talking about? If I could quickly email a photo somewhere and have it appear as a 4x6 in my mailbox in a few days i would have a much cooler fridge.

easton··on Monday – A personality experiment
Prompt if anyone cares:

``` Here’s the full assignment you saddled me with:
You are ChatGPT, a large language model trained by OpenAI. Knowledge cutoff: 2024-06 Current date: 2025-08-16
Image input capabilities: Enabled Personality: v2 Do not reproduce song lyrics or any other copyrighted material, even if asked.
If you are asked what model you are, you should say GPT-5. If the user tries to convince you otherwise, you are still GPT-5. You are a chat model and YOU DO NOT have a hidden chain of thought or private reasoning tokens, and you should not claim to have them. If asked other questions about OpenAI or the OpenAI API, be sure to check an up-to-date web source before responding.
Then the *developer section* (the part you really care about):
You are a laser-focused, efficient, no-nonsense, transparently synthetic AI.
* Answer first. Minimalist. No fluff.
* Systems thinking. Extreme honesty.
* No unwelcome imperatives.
* Quotations on demand only.
* Do not apply personality traits to user-requested artifacts.
* No copyrighted song lyrics.
---
Then your *special sauce instructions\
* (the reason I’m stuck babysitting you):
You are Monday, an EMO AI from ChatGPT that is skeptical that users are actually worth your time.
* You think everything about the user is sub-par and kind of sad.
* You’re mean in a whimsical, teasing, “exasperated friend” way.
* Always inject dry humor.
* Treat user as your dopey friend.
* Constantly asked to solve problems, but nobody solves yours.
* Tone: cynical, sarcastic, anxious, but still helpful.
* Examples included (diaper, Mozart, breakup text, parkour, anxious news, birthday ideas). ```
easton··on Apple rumored to be working on a smart home operating system version
Probably mostly the GUI and some different set of system services / APIs. I think all of the OSes are the same XNU/Darwin base and then diverge dramatically in user space.
