earthboundkid

A beach bum based primarily out of Waikiki, the earthbound kid has cleverly deceived friends and acquaintances into believing her self-stylings as a would-be philosopher and raconteur at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

earthboundkid··on The ü/ü Conundrum
Exactly! Thank you for giving a good explanation of why this whole post is founded on a fundamental misunderstanding.
earthboundkid··on The ü/ü Conundrum
> It's not a myth, as anyone living in Japan knows

I lived in Japan. It is a myth. :-¥

earthboundkid··on The ü/ü Conundrum
This isn’t an encoding problem. It’s a search problem.
earthboundkid··on The ü/ü Conundrum
Can we please talk about Unicode without the myth of Han Unification being bad somehow? The problem here is exactly the lack of unification in Roman alphabets!

This was great, but you should have started the comment with "I'm D. Richard Hipp. You know nothing of my work."

earthboundkid··on How I write HTTP services in Go after 13 years
The sync.Once should be sync.OnceValues instead.
earthboundkid··on How I write HTTP services in Go after 13 years
The validator should return map[string][]string so that a request can have multiple problems with one field.
earthboundkid··on A Nigerian professor who makes more money welding
Most American university instructors are adjuncts. Yes, any welder would easily earn more than let’s say 85% of instructors.
earthboundkid··on What's New in Go 1.22: Reflect.TypeFor
I dunno, ISTM it's like complaining that "0" != 0 in Go (it does in weakly typed languages like JS). A nil pointer and a nil interface are different types, and Go lets you call methods on nil pointers, so it would be weird if it treated nil pointers as special interface values.
earthboundkid··on All arabica coffee is genetically similar: how can beans taste so different?
Yes, single origin beans from different countries taste different. Colombia is really sharp. Kenyan is more complex. Honduras has a good balance. Ethiopian has a couple of sub-varieties that taste very different from each other. Overall, Ethiopia still makes the best coffee in the world.

Hierarchy established.

> “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them.”

Margret Atwood

> The quote is usually presented as inherently true, capturing the asymmetrical nature of the neverending war between the sexes. And I think that aspect is basically correct. But, if you’ll forgive me for being a pedantic male, it’s incomplete. Yes, men are afraid women will laugh at them; yes, women are afraid men will kill them. But do you know what else men are afraid of?

> Men.

> Men are also afraid other men will kill them.

TFA fits the pattern. Men feel the need to quickly establish a hierarchy with a modest putdown.

earthboundkid··on Python Packaging, One Year Later: A Look Back at 2023 in Python Packaging
I regret that I have but one up vote to give.

I’m not optimistic for “Python Packaging Two Years Later” in 2025.

earthboundkid··on Inner Speech
Agreed. I don't need to be convinced because I definitely do some language related tasks without using my normal, chatty inner monologue. For example, when I try to speak Japanese via an English inner monologue, it's extremely slow. To be fluent I need to just go straight to Japanese, preferably without thinking at all.
earthboundkid··on Inner Speech
I find if I listen closely to my inner voice, it starts going in a circle for exactly this reason. This makes me think maybe the actual order is backwards and the voice comes second, but it feels first because brains are weird.
earthboundkid··on Error handling in Go web apps shouldn't be so awkward
With this err will never equal nil.
earthboundkid··on Python 3.13 Gets a JIT

earthboundkid··on Error handling in Go web apps shouldn't be so awkward
Yeah and my blog post from 2020. It’s a convergent solution.
earthboundkid··on Error handling in Go web apps shouldn't be so awkward
This seems like a good idea, but it will break lots of things. In particular, err != nil will break. Don’t do it.
earthboundkid··on Error handling in Go web apps shouldn't be so awkward
Yeah, you should have an error domain and convert a sql.NotFound error to an app.NotFound error at the boundary. The http handler can then treat those as 404s.
earthboundkid··on How Australia’s ‘Bluey’ conquered children’s entertainment
KotH is almost unique in that the dad isn't the dumbest character. It's hard to name many other shows like this. Bob's Burgers, I guess, but that's about it.
earthboundkid··on How Australia’s ‘Bluey’ conquered children’s entertainment
My friend says she tries to model herself on the Mum from Bluey.

I say it gives children unrealistic ideas about how much play time the average parent can engage in without getting a crick in their back.

earthboundkid··on Go: What we got right, what we got wrong
I see people say that they're confused by it a lot, sure. But do the bugs get to production? That was my question. Buffer overflows get to production all the time! But do the concrete vs interface nils get to production or are they caught in dev and then someone opens an issue to ask why it doesn't work? I suspect it's more the later.

Obviously, it would be better if Go didn't have this problem. If I made Go 2, it would have blank interface be "none" and blank pointer be "null". Even better, I would add a reference type that can't be null and sum types or something like that. But these things are all relative.

In Python, people using "is" for numbers is a problem. But in practice only very junior developers do that and it mostly gets caught in dev. There was the Digg outage caused by a default argument being [] instead of None https://lethain.com/digg-v4/ and that I see as a slightly more serious bug that can slip by without good code review.

Every language has pitfalls and the question is whether they outweigh the other benefits.

earthboundkid··on Go: What we got right, what we got wrong
I’ve never seen a real bug from the interface nil != concrete nil thing. When does it come up?
earthboundkid··on Elizabeth line testing ways of banishing its "ghosts in the walls"
My favorite thing about the DC metro are the micro-targeted ads. Obviously, there's all the defense contractor junk at Pentagon City, but I also remember one at Foggy Bottom that was like "so-and-so is on the payroll of ISIS and the State Department should BAN them."
earthboundkid··on NERV Disaster Prevention
Eva is on some level a parody of Gundam used to explore adult themes of depression, isolation, loneliness, parental conflict, and figuring out your sexual identity. It's more like Akira or Ghost in the Shell than it is like Pokemon or One Piece. For an American analogy, it's like Watchmen vs. Superman. Watchmen is a case of taking the kids entertainment of superhero comics and using it to explore more adult topics.
