earleybird··on “Quantum-Safe” Crypto Hacked by 10-Year-Old PC
Given that Eddie is telling a story from his youth it's probably fair to say it was in common use 10+ years earlier - which is consistent with my vernacular at the time.
earleybird··on How to lose access of our your servers on DigitalOcean
I work in the public service sector. When we're architecting OAuth2/OIDC integrations we specify using a unique identifier like a guid or some otherwise immutable id as the federation id. This way other attributes that may be ephemeral can change at will. It's not always easy determining this but it's worth it.

Hey that's me you're talking about . . . and then I found out people would pay me to write programs. :-)

Thanks for the reminder.

I remember my mum saying "if you're going to program you better learn to type" - that was when I was going into gr 10. I didn't always follow her advice but I did take the typing class.

earleybird··on Why is solar more expensive in the U.S. than in other countries?
If it helps, I've done hardwood floors and tile but have a hard time with drywall and texturing. For the hardwood, I just needed someone who had done it before (my brother) to show me one time.

While I can certainly see improving recall being helpful, for me, knowing when to apply something is the powertool I need. eg. I know what commuting is, I know how to do it . . . what I really need to know is when to commute.
earleybird··on Byte Magazine: LISP (1979)
They don't cite[0] quite possibly because they independently discovered it as did others like L.P. Deutsch (who sometimes is prepended as Deutsch, Schorr, Waite). It stands out for me as something I ended up working out as an improvement for an implementation of LispKit Lisp[1] sometime around 1982. Imagine my surprise when I came across a reference to DSW describing my 'little pointer trick' :-)

earleybird··on Ask HN: How are you using your Raspberry Pi?
one for each of the following

- Pihole

- Apache, subversion (proxied through Traefik on a 3 node x64 Docker Swarm cluster)

- NodeRed, MQTT (ESP8266 temp / humidity probes various locations around the house, running since 2017)

- OctoPrint for PrintrBot (3D printer circa 2015)

- OctoPrint, Klipper for Ender 3

Also, a 4 node K3s cluster each with 400gb ssd and 2Tb seagate managed by Longhorn

apparently I don't know when to stop :-)

earleybird··on Use one big server
Pi behind cloudfront/flare and you caching sorted (as you say) and you'll handle pretty much anything. (well, maybe make that a Pi-4 8gb if you can get one)

earleybird··on Scrumdog – a program to download Jira Issues to a local database
While it is possible, it is certainly less than stellar compared to the other languages that were reviewed. Granted my experience was 1 - 2 yrs ago with .Net Core 5. I recall having to deal with setting different temp directories each time I wanted to run a another instance of a 'single binary' because the first thing it did was unzip the bundled runtime into the system wide TEMP directory. It certainly was a single file app but behaved more like an installer.

Whoever came up with that obviously didn't understand the why of single .exe applications.

earleybird··on Programming with union, intersection, and negation types
> You can sum the same type (union(Int, Int) simply is Int)

I'm not sure this is the case. In some cases Union(Int, Int) might be interpreted as a union of Left-Int or Right-Int

Then again, my understanding of sum vs union might not be overly precise :-)

I understand how you might think this. However, please consider that the statement you were responding to is establishing a bonafide - a reason why burntsushi's words might be worth consideration.

Sometimes an appeal to authority is not wrong.
