eande··on The chip shortage keeps getting worse – why can't we just make more?
Old article May 5th of this year, which in that industry is a long time. Nevertheless the situation since did actually get worse as predicted. Not only is it chip shortage we should call it component shortage. A standard 10k 0406 package resistor is sold out around the world. Many high quality, high density capacitor you can't get. The same goes for the standard semiconductor parts like diodes, MOSFET or TVS. Semiconductor sales rep give you now +50 weeks lead time for the many ICs meaning no real forecast at this point. They generally tell you 2022 will be tough maybe Q4 will ease up.

Many of the major semi companies are running at fairly high capacity, but supporting elements like IC package build capacity, sometimes materials can't keep up as well.

We looked at some boards to redesign, but when you are short hundreds of parts it gets nearly insurmountable to manage a hardware redesign. Interesting and challenging allocation period, definitely worse than 2003-2005.

eande··on Amazon ends its unlimited cloud storage plan
I really like their service as an additnal backup at times with rclone. Not sure if i will continue the service.

What do other people use for cloud storage with several hundred GB Without high monthly fees?

eande··on Ask HN: Do you regret taking investment?
This is an excellent comment when it comes to building up a hw/sw company. I went through the same steps with my startup. Knowing most of the details from tooling/cost/inventory/CM I still keep coming back and thinking what other ways are there to build a hw/sw product company without these major investments upfront. The idea is to verify the a product-market fit for a solution before you sink in all the expenses, basically on a smaller scale. So far I have not found a fundamentally different approach other than small cost reductions like not using a polished steel tool etc.
eande··on Ask HN: Best business advice for software developers
Excellent points beyond the boiler template on what to do to succeed. This reads like a lot of personal experience in here.
eande··on Ask HN: Does anybody still use Siri?
My children play with it.
eande··on Rohinni: Paper-thin LED lighting
How do you know that Nth Degree Technologies is one and the same as Rohinni? Searching and reading through all the articles I was not able to establish any link between the two companies.
eande··on Rohinni: Paper-thin LED lighting
We also develop since 2.5 years a thin backlight LED lighting technology and do observe the market closely. I am in the same boat here with lots of skepticism at least comparing to the photoshop pictures and expectations set. As the articles says it is some ink combined with LED lights, which will require some thickness as there is a silicon, die attach, some sort of bonding and a base carrier. http://www.businessinsider.com/lightpaper-technology-prints-... With the thickness of the material thin as paper there is very limited optical scattering possible, which would require enormous amount of LEDs to compensate for. To me something does not add up here or it is truly a revolutionary technology, but I do know from our optical simulations ink printing alone won’t make that possible.
eande··on Hardware by the Numbers (Part 1: Team + Prototyping)
Great article for anyone building a hardware startup. Although in my opinion a fundamental flaw on the patent statement.

I do agree you have to be very cautious if you want to spend resources on patent and how much effort you want to place. But the advice of just pushing it out for later is not really practical. The moment you make your invention public by showing your demo you can't file a patent anymore as it becomes public knowledge.

Filing provisional patent assuming written up in legalese language, not the 1 page word document can be a possible middle ground.

eande··on Idea that intestinal bacteria affect mental health gains ground
About 5 years ago I stopped eating gluten. For me it was mostly some intolerance and skin reaction. Needless to say how well I am doing now compared to before. Finding the link was the hard part and took decades.

A side effect I noticed was the disappearance of allergies. I had some level of pollen allergies and can't recall to have any reactions anymore, which is part of having a improved immune system function.

This is where it gets interesting to that article. I also noticed my general far better mood stability. I never had much of a problem, but like any human some ups and downs. Being more energetic I recognized also that I am far more upbeat. I do have no real explanation and it is only my case, but I can see the link between the digestion and depression.

eande··on Learning languages is a workout for brains, both young and old
We have 3 languages in our house and my 8 year and 10 year girls master all three languages (English, Chinese & German) without a problem.

Key in the early learning stage is the relationship of person to language and to repeat it

one person = one language

Our family conversation is happening in English and that is their native language by a distance. The girls do have daily Chinese afterschool program and with my wife using it daily it kept them very proficient. My German use is limited and I can tell they are getting a little rusty.

eande··on Peter Thiel Is Wrong About the Future
Incorporating e.g Delaware in US is below $1k. In Germany starting a GmbH in Germany requires a $25k Euro capital http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stammkapital There is still a lot more regulation in Europe when it comes to operating a business. It is also one of the reasons why I see so many European start-ups here in San Francisco trying to establish early on.

eande··on Poll: How do you manage your passwords?
using eWallet and after I got it down works very well for me.
eande··on A VC’s startup secrets he wishes he had known as an entrepreneur
True, you have to dive your mind into the article to follow along as it has a dense content writing style. Having read over the years many of these kind of articles I thought this is one of the best aggregated information in a single article. Each sentences carries lots of deep experience. In my opinion well done.
eande··on Hacker News down, unwisely returning HTTP 200 for outage message
I am not a news junky, but I realized how dependent my newsfeed is from Hacker News. Seeing about 6-8 times the outage message reminded me on why I keep coming back and reading the quality entries of these forums.
eande··on Germany's Energy Poverty: How Electricity Became a Luxury Good
I just came back from a visit to Germany after 5 years and I was blown away by the gigantic size of all the solar panels and wind turbines spread throughout Germany. It is unreal if you see it.

Following the news and hanging out with my old friends talking about the energy policy in Germany I learned very quickly how messed up this is now.

A kWh is now 34cent and continues to explode and it is not surprising given how the German politician approached their energy policy. It is a long article with lots of depth, but this statement captures the core of the problem, “Swedish utilities have an interest in maximizing their return on investment. This is different in Germany, where the most inefficient technology at a given time is the most heavily subsidized”.

Twenty years ago when I graduated with my EE I learned about the challenge of storing efficient and cost effective energy in the GW and that has not been resolved. This energy policy is a good example when a free market with demand and supply is ignored. The politician do not understand the technical details, have lots of special interest influencers and set policies in place which can have some really negative long term effect. The thinking is they just can overrule a market by subsidizing, but this works only to a certain level. I am all for renewable energy, but I do think it has to be done in a competitive way otherwise it is unsustainable in the long run.

It is really bizarre to read that a country investing billions in a zero emission energy solution now increases its CO2 emission by 2 percent. When I visited I heard the story from the wind turbine on Borkum as well and though that something went seriously wrong here, but as always when politics is involved no one is accountable.

eande··on Indiegogo: Ubuntu Edge
I think a side effect of his campaign is that it will put Indiegogo into the spotlight for crowdsource funding at least temporary. But this Ubuntu Edge campaign itself seem to me is writing a new chapter on what is possible with crowdsource funding when you hit a true market demand and when you ran a well thought out campaign. My hope is they do deliver the to their best capabilities and make this to a successful campaign.
eande··on Inequality and Mass Transit in the Bay Area
I am not sure where their data is pulled from, but the numbers are not correct, at least for Redwood City. http://www.city-data.com/city/Redwood-City-California.html Redwood City median income in 2009 was $67,611.
eande··on How to create a sales process
highrisehq
eande··on How to treat heat like light
Interesting; I wish the news has some more details on specific numbers e.g. efficiency.

From my perspective such concept will require for commercialization a strong application driver or killer application, which is something I did not get a clear picture here.

eande··on China Mandates Fibre For All New Homes
I live in Redwood City, actually Redwood Shores and just two days ago I saw one of the neighbors driving by with a new Tesla Model S. In my home I have AT&T and the fastest speed they can offer is 1.5Mbps. I keep looking for U-Verse here in the heart of Silicon Valley, but it remains a dream.

For my start-up I travel every 2 months to China, Shanghai area. Every time I go there and visit different places I am just astonished the internet speed many homes have there and the hotel I stay typically has 25M-30MBps. To me it does not sound like this new ruling makes them move ahead, I feel like they are already ahead.

eande··on US DoD signs $617 million Windows 8 licensing deal
And the city of Munich, which is small compared to DoD users saved $17Mill by switching all their users over to Linux.
eande··on You can do it alone
yes, you can do it alone and I had some success building up my hardware company. But at some point I decided to change and bring in co-founders and our momentum just build up x-times higher.

First hand experience tells me too, that starting up a company alone is not only really hard, but slower as well, which these days speed is more crucial than ever.

I have to agree on common wisdom and recommendation here that if you want to start a company and create something with impact try to partner up. Finding the right partners is another whole chapter by itself.

eande··on Show HN: RewindHN - Go back in Hacker News history
Great work! Typing date/time directly would be a nice extra feature.
eande··on Rejected by Kickstarter? 'Roll your own' with Selfstarter instead
"KS also has to find a milestone scheme where the money gets to the makers on an agreeable schedule"

not sure if KS wants to get into monitoring of project details and this idea is a hard one, because as organization making physical products you have big upfront expenses to pay like tooling and it requires the money early on.

eande··on Announcing K9 Ventures II – A $40M technology-focused micro-VC fund
At an event I had the chance to talk to Manu and quickly came to the same conclusion as many posts say, he is a great guy. Good to see the micro fund happening and I expect many more great and interesting investments. Someone to follow.
