eagletusk··on Puerto Rico files for biggest ever U.S. local government bankruptcy
It's my understanding that almost all of it that can has left the island.

Wiki had data up until ~2013 and things haven't exactly improved since then. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Puerto_Rico

Welcome to Earth?

U.S.A was also once owned by another country and it managed to figure something out.

I lived in PR for a few months in 2014, every week I would learn more and more about how much of a disaster that island is.

I wish them luck cause it's going to be hard to get things going again.

Why would USA want PR as 51? What benefit is there?

PR has more debt that California, and zero industry except for Bacardi rum.

Name one thing made in PR?

eagletusk··on Why public lands must remain in public hands
Human's that acquire more leisure time are going to want to stay in the city more and more? I feel the opposite trend will happen. I live in a outdoor industry bubble in Boulder Colorado so I have blinders on perhaps.
eagletusk··on Why Walking Helps Us Think (2014)
I've managed to finish a few 1 hour runs on pavement only during races, but an hour long trail run in in the woods? I'll plan a weekend around it. In Japanese there is the concept, Forest bathing, shinrin-yoku (森林浴).
eagletusk··on Identify Plants with an App
This is an interesting problem that almost all guide book authors have to contend with, bringing knowledge of a topic may expose people to risk, but I think it's maybe a false conclusion.

It's a given all guides have false information, it then begs the question are guides worse than no guides? I think this can be easily answered more information is better.

You can give people information but you can't understand it for them.

kudos for making the app :)

What do you think your app would identify this as? Carpet mushroom? http://imgur.com/a/Rqc64

Exactly, anywhere plants grow you can put solar, Germany has one of the highest concentrations of solar but pretty dismal sun. Germany stopped building Neuclear Plants and didn't like buying Natural Gas from Russia, so they basically invented the modern Renewable industry.

That's the way construction happens. It's a temporary thing.

*Except for the Sagrada Familia building in Spain which started construction in 1982 and is expected to be finished in 2026.

6 months here, 5 there. Long hours. Definitely not boring, great job satisfaction when you can say you helped build a 100 MW Wind Farm. Decent pay.

There are maybe 5 major EPC Engineer Procure Construct companies all of them are very similar.

Lots of military types find the field work similar their previous experience.

You get to meet people from all walks of life, rural farmer to execs of S&P 500 companies.

Lots of driving.

More project management then Engineering if you're in the field.

I've also been a part of a few large scale solar farms 20-100MW Same companies and same work situation, but less cranes.

Find the construction trailer ask for an application. Make sure you can pass a drug test and actually show up for work then I'd say your chances are 50% , 80 % if you find a job site that is just starting construction.

If you want to know where they are building go through Abilene, TX and ask.

eagletusk··on The U.S. wind industry now employs more than 100K people
Wind Farms are built by people living in RVs already, so you've got that figured out. Three months here 6 months there.

Embedded software is extremely hard to do mobile, and anyways all of the electronics tech is designed in Germany.

Getting a entry level job in wind is about being nearby and willing to work. If you have a college degree you can always be a field Engineer.

I'm an Electrical Engineer in the wind industry now, previously I was in the field, and previously I was an embedded software/hardware engineer.

3 weeks for electronic components, you have extreme patience, I would have mostly given up on the project if that much time elapsed.

eagletusk··on TreeMaker: Origami Design Software
Robert Lang's tome Origami Design Secrets was my first non school related introduction into mathematics. I remember looking in awe at the equations in the back of the book, then I started taking math courses ... For awhile there I was almost able to follow what he was talking about, now 8 years out of uni, I can once again look in the back of that book in awe.
eagletusk··on Ask HN: Underemployed and anxious. What would you do?
Exactly, do the grunt work. Get a job in the Midwest if you need to, grind it out and get to be mid-level, then be the jobs will be calling you.
eagletusk··on Solar industry facing devastating 800% tax increase

Indeed, it could be argued that speech - with some exceptions - is generally discouraged.

This is inline with the absolution of the self... If Buddhism believes that the self doesn't exist it's hard to use language that directly engages with the idea of self (subject).

eagletusk··on How Children Lost the Right to Roam in Just 4 Generations
I grew up in a city of 100,000 in the Midwest I was biking to school 4.5 miles at age 12.

I soon figured out I could get detention, miss the bus, but still get home on my bike. Couple that with a habit of getting the mail daily, and I was able to to serve detention without my parents knowledge (I think).

Hinduism eats other religion, it's the super set religion, which is cool except for the cast system and that it says we all are living in the downward spiral (Kali Yuga) where people are as far away from God as possible. I don't wanna live in a downfall...
eagletusk··on A new brain mapping technique reveals circuitry of Parkinson’s disease tremors
What article did you read? Singularity? They have been using Deep Brain Stimulation for years now. This study sheds some light on DBS but we still basically have no idea why it works. Anecdotally my father has DBS and he was able to get off this terrible medicine Ropinirole (pseudo dopamine) that has a side effect of causing people to gamble excessively as well as, hypersexuality, punding, and in my father's case compulsive fishing.

eagletusk··on Ask HN: length of "vacation" between leaving job and starting own company
I just took a one year trip. I think it helped me to get a lot of perspective on my life, this might be interesting to you or not.

I was on the verge of starting my own business but I back tracked as I saw it in a different light, I gained new perspective on it.

I spent one year in South America learning Spanish, studying yoga and mediation in Thailand and India, learning bit of Chinese, learning to run and running a 10k and getting fit. Getting a real low paying job in America selling fireworks. ect...

Now I am back at the full time gig and getting shipped off to Puerto Rico to build a solar farm, something that would have never been on the table if I didn't take the time.

two weeks seems so laughable to me.

I spent 12 days in a silent meditation retreat, that is almost two weeks there.

One way to look at life is through the lens of time, we all have x amount of time, we get to choose how to use it. Everybody is given time, rich people and poor people all have this x amount it's a great equalizer.

My year abroad cost about $17,000, that is an incredible deal.
