eagleal··on Traveling the World on a Third World Passport
Don't be so quick to jump to solutions where the problem is unbelievably complex. One word? Iran. Another word? Iraq. One other word? Afghanistan. Another one again? Palestine.

All those countries listed above, none had problems before foreign interests intervened. And most of this is true for any 3rd World country.

While you and I have the opportunity to make a change in our countries the same is not true for any country, you can't work by extrapolation. Especially when all you can do is struggle to survive.

eagleal··on Redesigning Hawaii’s Emergency Alert System UI
While we all love pretty and overdesigned UIs, for it to be more 2018 friendly make sure to add 5MB of JavaScript and CSS dependencies and new features that only works on Chrome!

As others have noted though step-based flow is not really recommended on a mission-critical UI as you can't rely on user memory. Why not just show the choices sequentially without hiding anything through various generic message screens?

Alert type: [ test ] - live

Message: other1 - [ Kauai county only ] - other2

Confirm: Send test > Kauai county only?

Thanks, I'll give it a go as well if you don't mind. :)

eagleal··on Float Label Pattern
Actually it does when you focus on an input. Having borders/backgrounds on every piece of text proved to be a bit messy in my case.

It would've been cooler if I could've capture the interaction, but I don't have access neither to the live webapp, neither do I have a deployed development version at hand :(.

eagleal··on Float Label Pattern
I've made something similar on a data editing UI back in 2011. But I found that showing the label only on field focus wasn't really suitable for UIs that contained multiple fields of similar data.

Like in the example below[1] there are two fields where you can enter coordinates data, but without a hint you wouldn't be able to distinguish where should one or the other go.

eagleal··on New gaming laptop with innovative UI by Razer
If I remember correctly, should be an HP (sorry I can't find that damn model). I live in Italy, and I saw it in an Euronics ad.
eagleal··on New gaming laptop with innovative UI by Razer
You can actually get a laptop with the same specs for about 900€. (the only thing that missed is the little touch screen on the right, and the 17", it was 15.6)
eagleal··on Introducing schema.org: Search engines come together for a richer web
I would say it's just more easy for them to parse/extract data, it shouldn't change much to the user (excerpt special cases in browsers).
eagleal··on EveryJS: The Right Tool for the Right Job
It's also under the "History" menu item with the same name, in case it just loads the home (which happens usually).

eagleal··on Chomsky was wrong: evolutionary analysis shows languages obey few rules
There is here on HN a user that makes freely available for download papers behind pay wall, but can't find his account name (I thought I had it bookmarked).

eagleal··on Why Gorgeous User Interface Design is Important - MyColorscreen Blog
At least compare equal products. On the list Awesome Note VS Ultra Notes I, are the only comparable ones (even though iPhone app vs Android App).

"Calcbot VS Calculator", is like comparing HP-48 vs Mac inlcuded Calculator. "Bjango VS Musical Pro", the former is a disk scratching app, while the latter features a metronome and tempo.

Edit: UI and UX reflect the functionality, features, plans, mission, identity (the one people identify and wear shirts about), etc. If the application and its functionality itself is not comparable, why should the UI be?

eagleal··on Windows 8 App Store Screens Leaked
Definitely more likely, wasn't sure if he was referring to the software quality only.
eagleal··on Windows 8 App Store Screens Leaked
I'm sure that's a mockup, or a prototype at best.
eagleal··on Study: Users judge your web page for visual appeal within 50 ms of opening it
Yes, but the parent copy has more quality (parent is text pdf, the link at the article is a poor scanned image pdf).
eagleal··on Harvard's 1899 Entrance Exam [pdf]
The Latin part (1st one) is very simple. The Latin high-school final exam here in Italy is way more difficult (you translate, analyze and discuss Latin authors from their original texts, eg. Cicero is tricky).

As schrototo said the greek part should be as easy.

eagleal··on Trinity - Distributed Graph Database from Microsoft Research
I would say that's Powerset's technology merged into Bing, not direct Freebase.

If you want a more practical application for Trinity look at http://research.microsoft.com/probase/ (linked at the bottom of the page). Also to quote the page:

Microsoft Bing’s AEther project now uses Trinity for managing AEther’s experimental data,
which consists of large number of workflows, and the evolutions among the workflows.
Trinity is the backend graph storage engine of AEther's workflow management system.
We are adding more functionalities, in particular,
subgraph matching and frequent subgraph mining, to support the project.
eagleal··on Meet Microsoft's guru of 'design matters'
> Bill Buxton is multiplatform the way Leonardo da Vinci was multiplatform.

I'm not a native speaker, but isn't polymath a better word to explain interest and expertise in multiple fields?

eagleal··on Music Theory for Beginners
I personally use FL Studio/Sibelius (FLS trial won't let you save your song in an editable format, but you can export in ogg/wav/midi/mp3). It depends on what you want to do, for music production Pro Tools/Logic Pro are a must (though it's more about the instrument library and external hardware quality).

Consider looking at the See also section for a list of DAWs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Audio_Workstation#See_a...

eagleal··on Designers, how do we get you guys to contribute to open source projects?
I would go so far to say you don't need a designer. You need someone who's passionate about multimedia applications and is working on a HCI project that relates very much with VLC. Someone who is thinking about future UIs, and things like that. (You need to give to this person, which likely is still non recognized, the biggest project recognition of his/her time).

Except for a few things (like the conversion feature, which is really hard for non-technical people), me, and those I know use it, find VLC pretty usable.

eagleal··on Designers, how do we get you guys to contribute to open source projects?
Adding on others (lack of recognition/respect, very difficult to submit changes if you're not a dev, etc).

One reason designers usually don't contribute to open source, is because they're paid to improve UX/UI on their commercial competitors. If GIMP/Inkscape had the same UX/UI as the Creative Suite, there wouldn't be market for the latter (this is what designers are paid for, unlike developers).

This allows more startup opportunities or companies like Canonical (parent company of Ubuntu) to provide a free and open source product (Canonical actually has dedicated designers).

eagleal··on Warning signs for the year 10,000
Well as they said above, to dig that deep the civilization needs a non trivial technology, so I would think any human with an index finger would get it (but the problem remains for those who don't have fingers).
eagleal··on New Chat Thing Convore Is Google Wave Minus the Suck
Months ago I talked with a guy who was working on a similar idea http://tap.info. (Well, the site is down as of now)

Agreed. It would make much more sense rearranged like this http://oi51.tinypic.com/15hzdcj.jpg
eagleal··on Ask HN: Do you know Photoshop?
I started using Fireworks since CS4. At first I didn't understand how it was different than say Photoshop or Illustrator for web design. Then as soon as I started mocking and designing UIs for actual web applications, or applications, Fireworks showed it's strength. (Heck I sometimes use it to make logos, http://www.ptizo.com/media/preview/brand/ptizo-logo-alpha.pn...)

The number one reason I prefer Fireworks it's that the file itself can be viewed as normal PNG (and still retain editable features). The second is the mix of vector/pixel objects (all you want from vectors but as pixels).

If you have to design for the web I would recommend you to use Fireworks over Photoshop as your design tool (please stop with the shadows and gradient madness, they make the page rendering slow and scrolling crappy).

eagleal··on Bing smacks Google in new usability test
But people are forgetting the hover text that Bing returns (see 1st result). For the search "circumference of the earth" http://oi55.tinypic.com/2jfx8ur.jpg

Compare that with Google's results https://img.skitch.com/20110211-r3jmccgi1ejs24p1hbdnu69fwm.j... (courtesy of xentronium). For this query Bing's results are far better that Google's (they actually specify circumference at equator and poles, alerting you that it's not the same; Google doesn't).

Also if you add (in meters|in miles) to the query, you get similar results to Google's.

eagleal··on Ask HN: sell me a good domain name?
Hi there. How about pludily.com? (I'm a holder of a few domain names for apps I decided not to pursue, they're short and I find them elegant.)

Or add some details like keywords for your app. Maybe I have something more suited.

eagleal··on So Long and Thanks for all the Bits
Have you found a new similar community to join? In the sense a new community with fresh "ideals" you are thinking of joining or already did. It's been more then 6 months I've been trying to find a good place (I need a way to keep track of trends).

I think I've assimilated all HN could give me. And good luck!

eagleal··on Thoughts on Webmatrix (Microsoft's simple website development tool)
If you're stack on the Windows platform, it may be a true pain to build using other technologies. Major OSS tools can be more easily mantained on Unix-like systems (RoR, Python, even PHP it's a mess on Windows).

I'm talking about production environments. I do myself use WinXP for development, because I'm forced by other tools I must use; but my current production env is Ubuntu.

eagleal··on What Separates a Generalist and a Dabbler?
Also comparing Jobs to da Vinci and Jefferson, well personally I see them in different levels (both on recognition and impact of their actions).
