eagleal··on That Secret Service SIM farm story is bogus
I don't know about US laws, but in most countries agencies/PMs/experts or whoever has access and is involved in the investigation, cannot make a comment if the investigation is ongoing.

Breaching of this, especially as you're making a case, in most cases at best would invalidate the whole case + bring disciplinary actions upon the individual(s) that committed the breach.

Judging by the other comments, looks similar for the US too.

If you're ever partecipated as expert in any investigation or news article you'd know you'd get usually biased hypothesis, if otherwise it meant you wouldn't have the same impact for the news story. Or if you've ever heard of the Gell-Mann amnesia effect.

eagleal··on South Korea's President says US investment demands would spark financial crisis
> prospects for the working class disappeared when you moved manufacturing to China

I think the prospects of the working class died with the crisis signaling the end of the USSR and by extension communist/socialist circles. After all it was the only counter-balance that instilled a baseline fear of violent uprising from the workers class in the heart of the wealthy class.

And in a way the final nail came with the free reign liberal policies that followed with Thatcher e Reagan, not so much about offshoring in itself.

eagleal··on EU Chat Control: Germany's position has been reverted to undecided
Most probably because they are not in power or leading the coalition at the moment. Similar positions were held by the once similar parties in Italy before they rose to prominence, and from once bigger parties trying to not vanquish.

Power consolidation is a shared trait of every leading individual or group of people.

eagleal··on EU Chat Control: Germany's position has been reverted to undecided
The exception means legally, that category of people, can't be prosecuted even if incriminating stuff were collected through such channels.

The next logical step, after a prosecutor or political push, would be for the Highest Order Courts of Member countries to invalidate evidence collected through such channels for those categories of people.

eagleal··on AirPods live translation blocked for EU users with EU Apple accounts
Indeed. But in my case it’s quite easy as it was a typo. Deemed is the correct one
eagleal··on AirPods live translation blocked for EU users with EU Apple accounts
But then simply don't install or buy "Shockz" if that's your concern.

Apple might be doing the same thing, but you wouldn’t necessarily know it, since their ecosystem is a closed gate.

eagleal··on AirPods live translation blocked for EU users with EU Apple accounts
> So the throttling was because they found that the old hardware and batteries weren't keeping up and so, instead of letting the devices become completely useless they throttled them.

There's no credible excuse to justify Apple's planned obsolescence of only a couple generation older products, except to increase the sales of newer models.

Also it's not like this company doesn't make big mistakes either. Remember the GSM iPhone 4 Antenna fiasco?

eagleal··on AirPods live translation blocked for EU users with EU Apple accounts
Most probably as you say they can't ship the capability yet, so they're blaming the regulations.

Or really the headphones actively register and send data outside of the EU. There's been some pushback recently on this front (ie. recent MSFT case [1]) since it's a known fact in the field that the approved 2023 EU-US DPF is basically BS, as it doesn't really address the core issues for which US companies were deamed not-compatible with GDPR.

eagleal··on I bought a £16 smartwatch just because it used USB-C
There's a category which is unbelievable it doesn't have as much popularity on open protocols/oss support which is a killer feature for these kind of wearables: glucose levels tracking with reverse engineered vendor lock-ins (think of Abbott sensors, etc).
eagleal··on White House Orders NASA to Destroy Important Satellite
Not one of OPs, but it's become common knowledge these days that a real class war has been ongoing for decades, with the final blow likely delivered by Thatcher and Reagan.

The social contract, between the effective ruling and representative classes and the populations they are supposed to serve, seems to have been completely broken.

So you could say everything not pivoting to this point is basically a distraction.

eagleal··on Figma will IPO on July 31
> Sketch was the market leader in ui design tools. Before that, it was photoshop

No before the current iteration there was Fireworks, then the smaller web apps for wireframe prototyping (Balsamiq, etc).

Professional Designers used inDesign for bigger portals or complex and vast UIs. Or AI for the prototypes.

Photoshop lacked good vector tools and comprehensive styling of corpus.

eagleal··on Solid protocol restores digital agency
Meh, there's workarounds to the GDPR framework if you're a company outside the EU. I'd say if you had a big company outside the EU, like the US, you'd have even less regulation than EU companies have to adhere to.
eagleal··on Cops say criminals use a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS – I say that's freedom
Force removal from Mobile App Stores, make EU companies avoid implementing their Pixels or Services or face fines, etc.

2022-2023 for example a lot of companies removed their Analytics and Pixels js, because some EU members agencies (Spain and Italy to be precise) started making pilot cases against domestic companies.

It did work though, EU companies could either take an enourmous cost to properly implement these (ie. by local proxy sending only minimized data) or remove them in favor of EU tracking companies. A lot of similar suits followed with cases against Meta.

By 2023 it was clear the EU would make a political deal with the US so companies restored the defaults, without making the necessary anonymization changes.

eagleal··on Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought (2023)
Without permission yes, if it stores it (but that would probably just be client-side).

If it stores it and uses it for matters different than what explicitely advertised when you consented to it, than yes it's even worse.

edit: just saw that's a service they resell. So yeah it is against GDPR

eagleal··on Cops say criminals use a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS – I say that's freedom
I personally take issue with this because it can be used by the USA to effectively target data protected under EU's GDPR, because the US has an agreement with Israel to send and share raw, non minimized, sigint without going through legal loopholes to sign proper consents within the US Agencies chain of command as required by the 2023 EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

I understand the US' companies and the War in Ukraine made a lot of pressure on EU's lawmakers, but the lawmakers basically nullified the scope of GDPR (military side, in a world where being able to control domestic SIGINT is king), and made EU' domestic companies unable to compete against foreign ones with one single decision (economic side).

It was just irresponsible.

eagleal··on “Laws” of software estimation for complex work (2021)
I think that was his point.
eagleal··on Elon Musk’s $44B education on free speech
Nobody... someone here identified the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives official visit in Taiwan as "just an old lady off-boarding a plane".

I'm making a stupid comparison for an example but just because we don't know them publicly to the same extent, doesn't really correlate with them having less power then say Justin Bieber.

As most often happens there's people whom Musk is dependant upon and in all probability has never heard their name.

eagleal··on Elon Musk’s $44B education on free speech
Given he was forced to follow up on the deal or face a market manipulation lawsuit, my personal opinion is that Musk wanted to work directly hands-on on Twitter's direction, overestimating his knowledge and know-how from the early dotcom. Given thefame he got from SpaceX and Tesla he seems to have fallen victim of his own illusory superiority. It's just a website right? For the matter I really have my doubts of him being able to personally code review a modern complex stack).

This is the only difference I spot, meaning no one was oversighting his internal management of the company. His inputs went live into operations as if they were tweets.

eagleal··on Elon Musk’s $44B education on free speech
Tesla also got funded through zero-emissions vehicle credits so I'd say the problem is always political. Same for the Staged combustion cycle engines, wouldn't it been for the US gov access to the N1 descendants I seriously doubt they'd been able to make such a progress.

Not sure why it should be different for a company like Twitter dependant on global access.

eagleal··on Twitter has banned Mastodon links in name and bio for being “malware”
To be frank, the quality of the "Experts" I've seen interviewed in these past two years alone spitting at best biased disinformation you can't really blame people for realizing how easily information can be manipulated. It's just too simple nowadays to find counter-proof "verified" examples of almost anything, including medical literature.

What should happen is for education institutions to step in and aid some sort of analytical and critical thinking from the young age, to learn the ability to fetch information safely

And what I mean about that is safe information isn't books=good, internet=bad. There's disinformation literature still to this day passed as institutional axioms.

Musk and Twitter is a really simple recent example of why this won't be possible, because asymmetrical information is power.

eagleal··on How Aphex Twin Made Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Being trained to appreciate it.

Ambient music in harmonics or patterns is a lot more abstract and different then pop, so to the untrained ear it looks more generally like "static noise" and boring. Trained ears you can for example take notice of evolving patterns (albeit their usually slow evolution, seemingly repetitive). And it's not only about the stuff you're hearing but also about what could be and what I call the negative space in-between (sorta like the counterpoint in classical music).

It's the same phenomenon as to why you'd like more songs on a particular genre you're accustomed to like Pop, then to something different in patterns like Metal.

eagleal··on Apple is quietly pushing a TV ad product with media agencies
Not only that but it's more feature rich. Like in 2022 you can't disable DTMF tones, no autosuggestion on the dialing screen, hard-limit to 100 most recent numbers in the log, and so on.
eagleal··on Apple warns suppliers to follow China rules on 'Taiwan' labeling
Wasn't that after removing the infamous "Taiwan Is Part Of China" from the Taiwan Fact Sheet, and the proposal for expansion of military aid to Taiwan? That old lady is also the US House Speaker, second in line for POTUS succession among other things.

Not exactly irrelevant.

eagleal··on ‘Your Map Is Wrong’
Economics is too broad. For example Land and Real Estate is zero-sum, as is strictly Debt/Financial/Monetary exchange.

Some things, as with blue skies research, really do create more wealth as in overall some technological advancements make making some things cheaper, or available.

Creating debt to print capital now for making X cheaper to produce is generally good as that zero-sum is offset by the wealth/wellness created by that capital in the future (a company producing cheaper components for example).

Meta exists in a zero-sum market, as advertisers fight for the same limited resource: attention (an individual can view as much advertisement in 24H).

eagleal··on ‘Your Map Is Wrong’
Wouldn't that make this market zero-sum?
eagleal··on Zelensky video deepfake
Most communities and bot network coordinators these days organize through Telegram. There's ton of easily fake materials (propaganda stuff, staged fakes, deceptively out of context or material first claimed to be something then appearing on another channel as something else).

After the initial piloting fake information spreads like virus.

eagleal··on Estonia, allies to trigger NATO Article 4
In a way the comparison is understandable, but in Kosovo and Bosnia there were systemic etnic persecution and genocide by the Serbian government.

A more similar comparison would be the US and USSR funding of factions in Italy during the Anni di Piombo. And then say US or USSR officialy arming and sponsoring Forza Nuova (or another militant organization) for indipendence of Padania.

eagleal··on Tesla files trademark paperwork for restaurant concept

eagleal··on Google is testing its new ad targeting tech in millions of browsers
The privacy and sensitive stuff seems like an excuse. As of now it looks like the implementor (Google Ads) might have a competitive advantage over other advertisers and platforms, since they have direct access to both the ID generator/categorizer and a wider initial base.

Any different advertising platform will always be inferior by definition.

eagleal··on Long Before Boeing 737 Max Crash, Ethiopian Air Pilot Warned of Dangers
From what I've read the Max has 2 AoA sensors, but reads from only 1 at a time, and MCAS chooses that 1 sensor randomly.
