eager_noob··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
Iterating through and evaluating possible approaches for shrinking the binary size of a tree-sitter based Vi/Vim compatible tags generator I am developing without affecting the developer experience for adding support for newer languages[1]. A couple of approaches have already been tried and failed to live up to the expectations on developer experience [2][3]. Next in line is to look into bundling only the tree-walking code for all supported languages with tree-tags and allow the user to configure the grammars to download separately from the main binary, possibly using the `wasm` feature which allows native library to run wasm compiled grammars.

[2] https://github.com/jha-naman/treetags/pull/62

Tried to use a generator for automating the bulk of the scanner for a language from `grammar.json` file of a tree-sitter grammar. A runtime engine uses the scanner for a forward only walk on the scanned code and calls the hooks to generate tags.

[3] https://github.com/jha-naman/treetags/pull/56

A complicated mess of a generator that takes a few declarative inputs and tries to generate code for spitting out tags for a given language.

Is this copy/paste with highlight available globally or limited only to terminals?

I can do this with text highlighted in iterm. Highlighted text can be copied in other apps as well with Shift + Command + “v”. Or with terminal app, where the shortcut only works when used within terminal app itself.

eager_noob··on How the McMurtry Electric Fan Car Clocked a 7.9-Second Quarter-Mile
Are track days the only viable place to find/meet these people who can help maintain such cars, or there are other ways. I couldn't hold back the question, but feel free to ignore

I would love to be limited by drivability rather than by economics from getting my hand on a Can-Am car. Good for you!

Figuring out a way to circumvent the rules was the reason for the F1 car being fascinating, and successful. It being a competition involving building the fastest car confirming to the prescribed Formula.
eager_noob··on Ask HN: What are some “trivial” achievements you feel satisfied about?
Figuring out that one of the services i was maintaining needed http connection pooling for calls to an external service to get within acceptable levels of performance. Spent a fair bit of time and effort to reach the conclusion and should have probably known to use it from the start, with it being a best practice followed in some other services already. Still, the whole process of finding/fixing the bottleneck left me very pleased.

eager_noob··on Tell HN: One month in, GNOME on Wayland is still amazing
The improved support for external monitors alone is enough to make one not want to go back to X11. No more fiddling with xrandr to fix scaling issues. Or being forced to settle for lower refresh rates if any one of the monitors or cables can't support higher rates. Moving to wayland has definitely resulted in a much better experience.

eager_noob··on Betrayed by an app she had never heard of
Quite an unfortunate situation for those who would like public pressure on apps to minimize the permissions they ask for. Atleast in whatsapp's case it would be hard to convince most people to stop allowing contact access to the app as being able to send messages to all your phone contacts without any setup on your part is probably one of the major reasons that whatsapp became so popular.

eager_noob··on Ask HN: Linux on a Macbook Pro. Viable or Get an XPS 13?
Typing this from Fedora running on retina MBP. Everything other than the camera works out of the box and has been a pleasant experience for the limited amount of time i have had this setup. Linux install is running from an external SSD connected through USB3 so OS X is untouched. I don't notice any performance issues with this setup, none of my workloads are disk heavy. External monitors requiring different scaling than the desktop might need some setup.

EDIT: No experience with touchbar equipped models
