eYrKEC2··on Semantic versioning is a mistake
I agree. SemVer doesn't give you permission to make breaking changes -- it documents your decisions, assuming you're honest with SemVer.

This is very very useful. You can look at a library or dependency and weigh out if frequent, breaking changes are ok for you or not -- is the value worth the pain? Alternatively, if the major version never changes, you can have more confidence that you won't have to rework your code on every library update.

eYrKEC2··on Google podcasts is shutting down
The content was never about the $200M and the listeners/readers probably never even cared about helicopters with bags of money.
eYrKEC2··on Google podcasts is shutting down
Exactly. "Blogs" might be dead -- also, many blogs are still the best content on the internet. Democratizing both the newspaper column and the radio show is great -- so many interesting voices out there.
eYrKEC2··on Qt 6.6 and 6.7 Make QML Faster Than Ever: A New Benchmark and Analysis
I think QML was originally designed as "mobile first", but I think it works fine for desktop interfaces as well. I wrote an app that ran on Android as well as Windows and I liked it just fine for that task.
eYrKEC2··on Qt 6.6 and 6.7 Make QML Faster Than Ever: A New Benchmark and Analysis
The only issue with declarative is when declarative is a prison instead of a fantastic and reasonable guideline. One of the very nice things about react is that you can escape pure declarative syntax to use actual javascript/typescript. Every declarative DSL/language/format that I've used has approximations like QML's [`Repeater`](https://doc.qt.io/qt-6/qml-qtquick-repeater.html), but eventually you will want and need some weird loop or logic that is most easily and succinctly expressed in a proper programming language -- at that point, you'll need to do some angry hack that unrolls one data structure into another so that you can iterate over that one with the limited logic in the declarative format. And then you'll have to keep the two models in sync.

All doable, just a pain.

eYrKEC2··on Qt 6.6 and 6.7 Make QML Faster Than Ever: A New Benchmark and Analysis
I find QML satisfactory for big screens. Made an app back in Qt5 and my main dev machine was a 4K, 43 inch LCD TV -- it did fine on the big screen. No limitations in that regard that I could see.
eYrKEC2··on In 2024, Intel hopes to leapfrog its chipmaking competitors
They need to dogfood their foundry service from their chip design and keep the same interface for both in-house and external so the pain points are ground down.
eYrKEC2··on Chesterton's Fence: A lesson in second order thinking (2021)
Chesterton's Fence doesn't conflict with disruption -- it conflicts with uneducated disruption -- disruption that doesn't understand what it's even disrupting.
eYrKEC2··on Germans among the unhappiest people in Europe
Culture is just social technology. Common patterns and routines for behaving in certain situations or ways to interact with people.

It can be good. It can be bad. It can be useful. It can be deleterious.

If a specific piece of social technology is not serving you well, don't make that social technology (culture) your identity -- reject it and try to adopt different social technology.

eYrKEC2··on TACF is no longer supporting development of D58 American chestnut trees
I bought some of those seeds and I just thought I had a black thumb. I planted my surviving seedlings this fall, a month before frost, and I hope they will survive winter..
eYrKEC2··on Django 5.0
ORM's always abstract away details, but you monitor for slow queries and slow endpoints and then just fix the issues when they crop up.
eYrKEC2··on Ask HN: What's your rust web application stack you use in production today?
Actix web and diesel.

eYrKEC2··on Rocket – Simple, Fast, Type-Safe Web Framework for Rust
It is fine to expose Rust to the internet. We do so at my company. The python api at our company is more worrysome than the rust-written api.
eYrKEC2··on Can we deter tech monopolies through reformed open source software development?
We're all stuck in the quagmire of Oracle databases, licenses, and lawsuits, because no open source alternatives exist. What a shame that open source hasn't deterred any monopolies and can't possibly do so in the future.
eYrKEC2··on Ethernet Is Still Going Strong After 50 Years
Because it's less fun to watch.
eYrKEC2··on Right turn on red? With pedestrian deaths rising, US cities are considering bans

eYrKEC2··on Google plans RISC-V Android tools in 2024, wants developers to "be ready"
I'm ready for it to be EOL'd and will attempt to build as little dependence on that substructure as possible.
eYrKEC2··on California employers must reimburse remote workers for all necessary expenses
If I were an employer hiring for a remote CA position I would just do accounting -- we were going to hire you for $150k, but now it will be $146.3k with an expected $3.7k of expense reimbursements.
eYrKEC2··on Costco Capitalism
For fruit, the price negotiation always tries to drive down the price, but there are something like 10 big buyers of fruit in USA alone, so Coscto and Walmart don't have a monopoly and the fruit sellers go elsewhere when the buyers turn the screws too hard. If Walmart ever becomes the only grocer in the USA, then yes, the farmers are toast. Otherwise, I know of one big fruit grower in my town with a Mediterranean yacht and another that drove in to the office with his Ferrari, inspected fields all day, being flown in the company helicopter, then showed up the next day in his other Ferrari. Huge grower, but then regulation and compliance is killing small growers in USA. Soon you won't be able to farm unless you can have a lawyer on staff.
eYrKEC2··on Costco Capitalism
That sounds like Walmart, but not Costco. Costco does have tough buyers who negotiate prices, but they really truly have higher quality standards. This was what I saw being on the other side for a company that sold fruit to both Walmart and Costco. Lower grade fruit was spec'd and sold to Walmart and higher grade fruit was spec'd and sold to Costco.
eYrKEC2··on Schools for children of military achieve results rarely seen in public education
If you cut off the lower tail of an IQ curve, no matter how little, you've just raised the average IQ of everyone remaining.

If they're in that low IQ tail and they go through the hoops for a waiver, you've just selected for a modicum of conscientiousness.

eYrKEC2··on Schools for children of military achieve results rarely seen in public education
Another factor is that the military parents have cleared a bar of pre-enlistment testing (ASVAB?) that has strong correlations with IQ testing.
eYrKEC2··on Richard Stallman Talks Red Hat, AI and Ethical Software Licenses at GNU Birthday
Well, as Scott Adams says, "Analogies are for fighting."

If an analogy is supposed to persuade me, but the internal premise of the analogy completely contradicts the purpose of the analogy, then perhaps it should be completely eliminated or at the very least it should be challenged.

Moreover, this contradiction within the analogy highlights the exact opposite. Likely, the CEO of Coca Cola experiences that "coke/pepsi" dialog with waiters all the time and merely shrugs it off --- because that is actually a reasonable response, unlike screaming at people over a tiny, unintentional slight.

eYrKEC2··on Richard Stallman Talks Red Hat, AI and Ethical Software Licenses at GNU Birthday
Do you think the CEO of Coca-Cola actually screams at waiters when they say, "we don't have Coke, will Pepsi be ok?"
eYrKEC2··on IRS consultant charged with disclosing tax return info to news organizations

eYrKEC2··on Raspberry Pi 5
I wrote my own irrigation controller with a web front-end on a pi3 and have used it for ~7 years.

Deployed a Qt app to dozens of pi4-based machines for doing clock-in/out and generating various PDFs in to support the business I was working for.

eYrKEC2··on Costco gold bars are selling out within hours
Oops, I meant "net short", not "not short".
eYrKEC2··on Costco gold bars are selling out within hours
It does seem that gold is not short. The price does seem manipulated to stay below $2k/oz.
