eYrKEC2··on As Alaska's salmon plummet, scientists home in on the killer
What if it's rich, because it's true.

I've lived next to two different reservations in WA state and I can confirm the fantastic equipment.

Also, on a random tour of the Leavenworth fish hatchery, we stumbled upon a fishery-management-sanctioned culling of "excess" fish at the Leavenworth fish hatchery into large blue food grade containers as part of tribes "share".

The whole story of where the fish are going is useful, even if it contradicts your preconceptions.

Wait until you find out about Native American's unrestricted fishing rights and their use of modern commercial fishing ships and equipment.

Brave is awesome. Skip the silly crypto integration and enjoy the amazing integrated ad-blocking.
eYrKEC2··on Face it: you're a crazy person
I didn't become a physician, because my teenage-self unpacked being a physician as telling fat people to eat better food and start exercising -- for 50 years. Turns out there are other specialties... Despite thinking the human body is fascinating, I'm largely happy I don't have to tell unhealthy people to do what they probably already know they should do and then give them a bandaid for their gaping lifestyle problems.

You're right, you should wait for the police, because when seconds matter, the police are minutes away.

In addition to the lost time, you'll have a hard time racking the slide from the adrenaline dump. Also, the bad guys always have first-movers advantage and you're always playing catch up.

After watching thousands of violent encounters on John Correia's "Active Self Protection" channel, I agree that round-in-the-chamber is absolutely necessary if you're carrying for self protection.

Yes. Just like Twitter is having fail whales all the time after his massive headcount cut.
eYrKEC2··on Brave blocks Microsoft Recall by default
This was true for me until ~2014. I haven't had substantial hardware compatibility issues on Ubuntu since then. Sure, a few google searches for the right nvidia driver, but otherwise I've found Ubuntu to just work for many years.
eYrKEC2··on Outdoor activity is better for cognition than indoor activity in young people
Sometimes nudity is not an option when it goes above 100F.
eYrKEC2··on A Rust-TypeScript integration
I like not getting paged at night, so I vastly prefer rust backends. I have experience with TS, Python, and Rust backends and the Rust backends very rarely failed for me.
eYrKEC2··on What methylene blue can (and can’t) do for the brain
Thank you for that.

For your consideration, I just ran across Dr. Keith Baar of UC Davis via Tim Ferriss' podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnFzjcPTSsc

He is recommending isometrics for tendon health, which is something I'm also going to incorporate.

eYrKEC2··on What methylene blue can (and can’t) do for the brain

Do say more. Nursing some achilles tendonitis on one leg right now.

"Physician heal thyself" should definitely be a baseline in the health and medical establishment -- but it aint.

Being in the top 5% of healthy people for your age bracket should be table-stakes and we definitely do not have much of that.

I don't care what kind of quackery it takes to look like this at 71. Sign me up.

Anyone use kubernetes argo workflow for CI automation?
eYrKEC2··on Why Is Geographic Mobility Declining?
You're making my point. People, including my grandfather, are moving because they put their career above people, family, friends, and relationships. And when they get there, they're still themselves and the grass isn't greener, but they get a Lexus rather than a Camry -- woop-de-doo.
eYrKEC2··on Why Is Geographic Mobility Declining?
Geographic mobility sucks. Why change your social network every 15 minutes for a job. If there are opportunities in your locale, why move? The grass probably isn't greener.

My grandfather did this -- chasing the dream at IBM and my father attended 6 different school districts growing up. They lived in mansions in downtown San Francisco and now he doesn't have a long term friend, because friendships and people are transient and you never know when you have to leave town for the next shiny nickle.

Fuck that.

eYrKEC2··on My stackoverflow question was closed so here's a blog post about CoreWCF
Stack Overflow is like online gaming -- lots of toxic people, but I still get value out of it.

Ask a question.

Ignore the trolls.

Get a question answered that would have taken you another day to solve.

Make money.

Thank goodness I can see it because I have enough reputation.

eYrKEC2··on America underestimates the difficulty of bringing manufacturing back
Tariffs don't help you compete globally -- they're about disadvantaging the global in favor of the local.

Someone may be able to pay workers $300/month and make them work the "996 working hour system"[1], but if they then have to mark up the end product by 100%, the disparity between local and global price to consumers narrows.

eYrKEC2··on Rust Is Looking for Your Feedback to Help Guide Its Future
Ooo. I want to be able to do an expression in a format string.

Instead of:

format!("{}:{} wasn't able to connect to host {}.", file!(), line!(), db_opts.hostname);

I'd rather do:

format!("{file!()}:{line!()} wasn't able to connect to host {db_opts.hostname}.");

Yes, expressions in format strings can be abused, but knee-capping a pretty standard case (`instance.field`)to prevent outlier bad behavior seems like a premature optimization.

eYrKEC2··on The Pain That Is GitHub Actions

eYrKEC2··on The Frontend Treadmill
Develop on Google -- when you really really really want to refactor your web app every 6 months. Love me some Android version bumps -- who needs compatible API interfaces?? Never did Microsoft or Intel/AMD any favors.
eYrKEC2··on The Front End Treadmill
The difference in speed between Angular 1 and React was like the difference between Python and Rust. Not only was React simpler than Angular and had fewer footguns, but it was so ridiculously fast out of the box compared to Angular.

Then Google google'd and left devs high and dry with the need to rewrite their apps from Angular 1 to Angular 2+, whereas React has been relatively stable, despite some incompatibilities -- yes there are new features and new methods, but you can still do React classes.

eYrKEC2··on Samsung Q990D unresponsive after 1020 firmware update
My Samsung TV got more and more unusable with every update. Over the years, saved apps, like Youtube, started to disappear every time it woke up. Then it would default to their Samsung TV app, rather than your last app. Samsung TV app happened to be on the Baywatch channel every time my young children started the stupid thing. Finally, after it took 2 minutes to load the youtube app, I factory-reset the device, disconnected the internet from it, and put a Beelink mini PC in front of it. Works flawlessly.

Samsung product life cycle support seems like planned obsolescence.
