dyu-··on China Doesn't Understand the Concept of American Chinese Food (2014)
Went to toronto 2 years ago and the chinese food we've tried there is pretty-amazingly-delicious. And yes, they don't even speak english :-)
dyu-··on Ask HN: How do you keep improving?
Read other people's code on github/gitlab. Use a bookmarker to manage them. Then once you pick a project you are really interested in, build something using that as a guide.
dyu-··on Instead of containers, give me strong config and deploy primitives
Cool. If any of it is opensource, please post the links in the reply, I'm curious.
dyu-··on Instead of containers, give me strong config and deploy primitives
+1 for systemd + ansible. That is exactly my setup on ubuntu 16.04 deployments.
dyu-··on A leveldb build for java with linux and windows support
To see an example on how it is used, visit protostuffdb-examples/todo on github
dyu-··on Show HN: Self-hosted bookmarks app with delicious/chrome import support
I've around 22k bookmarks accumulated from delicious since 2008. Early last year their service got worse (sold to different owners a couple of times). I was able to export my bookmarks and moved to chrome bookmarks for a while (it doesn't have multi-tagging support).

So I made this app to allow me to merge my bookmarks from delicious and chrome, and retain the multi-tagging functionality from the former.

dyu-··on Lyrebird – An API to copy the voice of anyone
This trump version [1] is quite believable. [1] https://soundcloud.com/user-535691776/trump-6
dyu-··on Show HN: Timestrap – Self-hosted online time tracking
Paid feature requests. If the user (like the GP) wants a certain feature and don't want to implement it himself, accepting his offer to pay would benefit both parties.
dyu-··on StarCraft I Goes Free with Today's New Patch (1.18)
Hopefully they'll add linux support with that new opengl backend they have
dyu-··on Backblaze B2 Drops Download Pricing by 60%
> If you truly value your data, two regions won't save you -> two vendors will.

Never thought of that. It is costly but still, great advice!

dyu-··on Cayley – An open-source graph database
Note that they changed the license from APL to AGPL just recently (13 days ago, based from their commits)
dyu-··on Cayley – An open-source graph database
Looking at the commit, they switched from asl to agpl.
dyu-··on Buck – A build system developed and used by Facebook
Yea that's what I meant for crossplatform builds when I compared it with GN (c/c++ only, production-ready) and bazel (multilang, unstable).

Are you a member of the buck team? Your new account only has activity on this submission.

dyu-··on Buck – A build system developed and used by Facebook
They made buck for themselves where their infrastructure runs on (*nix). Google's internal build tool (before bazel) was the same. Now chromium's GN build tool was made for their product that was targetted to run everywhere, which is why windows support is good.
dyu-··on Buck – A build system developed and used by Facebook
Doesn't support windows. You're better off with bazel or GN.
dyu-··on Buck – A build system developed and used by Facebook
Buck is a great tool but doesn't work on windows, where bazel is now starting to support. So for crossplatform builds, either GN or bazel.
dyu-··on Gmail Add-ons
You mean like igoogle? They killed it even though it had decent number of users.
dyu-··on Go 1.8 Release Notes
They're basically the same (its just a measurement error as you said).

Afterall, nim generates c files.

What's interesting is the nrvo optimizations that nim generates under the hood without much effort from the developer (on non-trivial codebases).

dyu-··on Go 1.8 Release Notes
Yea it was a toy example. Still the overhead is steep for applications that call c ffi often.

The workaround is usually to batch your computations on the c-side (micro-rpc) and minimize the calls (like cockroachdb is doing)

dyu-··on Go 1.8 Release Notes
Looking at the c ffi improvements posted, I thought I'd check if there were improvements.

Time in ms to call a c function 2 billion times (lesser is better).

95536 - go 1.1.2

130105 - go 1.8.0

It is a rather crude example:

// plusone is the ffi

int x = 0;

while (x < 2000000000) x = plusone(x);

Here's the source https://github.com/dyu/ffi-overhead

With other programming languages:

nim:

rust:

java7:

java8:

dyu-··on High-Memory Instances and $5 Linodes
Thanks to amazon lightsail we now have $5 linodes :-)
dyu-··on Below Deck: Filipinos make up nearly a third of all cruise ship workers
Yeah they're included.
dyu-··on Below Deck: Filipinos make up nearly a third of all cruise ship workers
Only waiters get their share from the tips. I've spoken to waiters (mostly filipino) during a cruise and the $50 monthly excluding tips is real.

I made a typo in my above comment. As a dishwasher, you get $450/month - fixed and without tips.

dyu-··on Below Deck: Filipinos make up nearly a third of all cruise ship workers
That's terrible man. $190/month as a dish washer $45/month as a waiter (with tips that could reach to 2k if you always work overtime and not complain about the lack of extra pay)
dyu-··on Show HN: Aragon – Everything you need to run your company on Ethereum
Looks like they're using unmodified semantic ui[1] based from their screenshot.

dyu-··on Sandstorm is returning to its community roots
Saw this coming :-/ I anticipated this one after app.net shut down. Next one up, cozy.io?
dyu-··on Nylas Mail is now free
A non-main/throwaway mail for that purpose would be a good one for you to have so you can test without giving away anything.
dyu-··on Why we chose Vue.js
It is very friendly. I've successfully migrated my gwt + vue-0.10 stack to typescript 2.0 + vue 2.0

Shameless plug: https://github.com/vuets/vuets

It is a micro-lib less than 100 LOC.

dyu-··on Visual Studio Code 1.6
Agree 100%. Ubuntu desktop and server is gaining market share among devs (those who prefer working on bare-metal) for precisely this reason.
dyu-··on Visual Studio Code 1.6
"As much as I wouldn't have believed this 10 years ago, Microsoft does open source better than almost everyone."

This. They are treating vscode like its a core (cash cow) product. I'd say google embraced/adopted open source early on and now microsoft is playing catchup while now becoming one of the very best to do it.
