dysfunction··on The first person to hack the iPhone is building a self-driving car
That's the point--the LAST people with jobs will be AI programmers, but they probably wouldn't have long to celebrate that status.
dysfunction··on The first person to hack the iPhone is building a self-driving car
Well that makes sense, given that basically all machine learning is transformations over matrices and that is Matlab's bread and butter. The equivalent C code might perform better when optimized, but it is going to be far longer and uglier. There's a reason a lot of ML work is prototyped out in Matlab first.
dysfunction··on Flint, MI: So much lead in children’s blood, state of emergency declared
No, according to the CDC:

> Heating or boiling your water will not remove lead. Because some of the water evaporates during the boiling process, the lead concentration of the water can actually increase slightly as the water is boiled.

dysfunction··on I hate the C++ keyword auto
There really is... diff tools that point to the compiler (or a parse tree for dynamically-typed languages) could be so much smarter than what we have now.
dysfunction··on Show HN: Lasergist.com – Your custom design in pure, laser-cut Stainless Steel
I have no idea what I'd make with this, but knowing I could have something made this way is awesome :)

Minor grammatical error: "How it works?" is not valid English. Instead this could be "How it works:", "How it works" (with the colon implied) or "How does it work?"

dysfunction··on Solitary Confinement Is Cruel and All Too Common
Are you saying that something is not a law because DMV.org says so, or that the cop thought something was a law because DMV.org said so? DMV.org is not a government website.
dysfunction··on Google’s look, evolved
I guess I shouldn't ask if you're a Godspeed You! Black Emperor fan...
dysfunction··on More Range in Chevy's Volt Means You Hardly Ever Need Gas
How would you compute the MPG for that? You have no idea where in Maine they drove to. From Boston to the northernmost town in Maine is 475 miles, so that would be 68 MPG one way.
dysfunction··on Metal Captcha
I recognized the Devin Townsend Project logo, but it won't accept "Devin Townsend Project", "Devin Townsend", "DTP", or "dtp".
dysfunction··on Brazil Is An Alternate Video Game Universe Where Sega Beat Nintendo
Playing the 32X port of Doom with no save ability was a pain. The game inevitably crashed on level 16, but it took my brothers and I several entire Saturdays getting that far to realize it. I loved the game, it wasn't until years later that I realized how atrocious a port it was.
dysfunction··on Stephen Hawking and Yuri Milner Announce $100M Initiative to Seek ET
A satellite can appear to "stand still" from the perspective of an observer on the ground, so long as it orbits at the right altitude/speed (speed and altitude of an orbit are proportional); the satellite's orbital period just has to be exactly a day long. For Earth, that altitude is about 42,000km up. However, it would still be easily determined to be a nearby satellite as opposed to a distant star by triangulation.

It might just be that people who view classified government info leakers/whistleblowers negatively tend to lean conservative, and so do those who view trans people negatively. It doesn't necessarily have to be that her trans status is causing anti-transgender people to also have an unfavorable view of the leaks (though that is certainly also possible).
dysfunction··on Ask HN: Is shareware dead?
The Reaper DAW (digital audio workstation) is another example. There's actually a lot of such 'nagware' in the audio world.
dysfunction··on Safari is the new IE
No, but you can use SMS, Skype, or Hangouts.
dysfunction··on The Netflix Website Gets a Major Upgrade
I don't understand why the console Netflix apps have the ability to show you exactly (ish) the quality you're currently streaming at (on PS3, hit 'select' button and it'll say "720p" or whatever it's at), but the PC browser client doesn't.
dysfunction··on Why We Age, Part III: Can We Live Forever?
> If you do not die and plan to stay on Earth,

Where else could you possibly go? Sending you anywhere else (like a terraformed Mars) might cost more resources than would keeping you alive on Earth for hundreds of years.

dysfunction··on The View from the Front Seat of the Google Self-Driving Car
So it would seem purely based on these numbers that the Google cars have had about 4.5 times the mean rate of property-damage-only crashes. However, these statistics don't show us what the shape of the curve looks like, so we have no idea what percentile the Google cars are in.

If we take Google at their word that not one of the 11 crashes was caused by the self-driving system, then these numbers aren't evidence against the self-driving car being safer even with human drivers sharing the road. It's possible the car was driving unsafely in some way that increased its risk of accident without ever directly causing them, but we can't even guess at that without knowing the probability of their crash rate being this distance from the mean by pure chance.

So, do you really think the roads will only be safer when all cars are self-driving--you don't believe there will either be an incremental benefit in overall safety as more self-driving cars get on the road, or a specific safety benefit to owners of self-driving cars?

dysfunction··on Class action lawsuit filed against Lenovo over Superfish
I find the Lenovo battery manager mildly useful; not amazing, but enough that I installed it on a fresh Windows install on my work Carbon. It just gives me more granular control than the Windows power options.
dysfunction··on Ask HN: New job is having me switch from Linux to Mac – how do I cope?
Alfred is even better than Spotlight alone, I have it mapped to option-A and I never launch apps any other way.
dysfunction··on Valve shuts down paid mod system after pressure from gamers
Fan-fiction doesn't require you to have bought the original work to read (though having read the original may affect your enjoyment of the fanfic).

Honda doesn't get a cut if I have my car modded at an independent shop.

dysfunction··on Aerotow to Orbit: The Eclipse Project
My only claim to expertise is playing a lot of Kerbal Space Program, but I'm not sure this is practical. I don't think an air-breathing tow plane could fully replace a rocket first stage.

Even if it can lift a launch vehicle to the same altitude as a rocket first stage, velocity is the more important component of getting to orbit. A Falcon 9's first stage gets it to 11,000kph, about 3 times the top speed of an SR-71, the fastest jet aircraft.

dysfunction··on 1,000-year-old onion and garlic eye remedy kills MRSA
Was the article edited? It now reads "They were "astonished" to find it almost completely wiped out methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, otherwise known as MRSA."
dysfunction··on What Would You Recommend to a Bright 14 Year Old?
The Demon-Haunted World was incredibly formative for me, and I was around 14 when I first read it. Prior to reading it, I believed wholeheartedly that UFOs were alien spaceships, and despite already being fairly certain I was an atheist, I was still on the fence about ghosts. The most important thing about that book was that it didn't teach me that things I believed weren't true because a distinguished scientist said so; rather it taught me how to decide whether the things I believed were likely to be true, and how to examine why I believed them.

Of course I didn't immediately transform into a perfect 14-year-old skeptic by reading this book (I'm twice that age now and I'm sure I still believe all manner of things that aren't true), but this was the first time I truly realized that I even needed to be skeptical about what I believed.

Or, if parent isn't wrong, that the practice of medicine by human doctors will be replaced by the practice of medicine by non-humans (i.e., machines).
dysfunction··on 2015 Chromebook Pixel
Then why put a data port on it at all? Either they expect you to do everything through the cloud or they don't. If they expected enough people to plug stuff into it that it was worth putting a USB port on it, that means expect that the same people would sometimes do that while it was charging (given that these things last through a day of heavy use at best). Which means they do expect people to have to use a dongle.
dysfunction··on Nuclear Fusion: the long road from dream to reality
Do you think that fossil fuel depletion as a concept is a fantasy, or just the idea that it will be noticeable anytime soon (e.g. this century)? If the former, is that because you don't believe we are using fossil fuels faster than they are naturally deposited?

dysfunction··on Stanford to host 100-year study on artificial intelligence
The green line is the only one that Moore's law is about. Power consumption plateauing is a good thing, clock speed was never going to be the primary driver of performance increases long-term, and instruction-level parellelism (green line) is not a measure of performance-per-clock-cycle.
dysfunction··on Wit.ai (YC W14) Is Joining Facebook
This acquisition actually makes a lot more sense to me than Facebook buying Oculus. Oculus' ostensible business model was selling hardware to users, which is totally orthogonal to Facebook's business model of selling users to advertisers. IMO there's absolutely no way Facebook bought Oculus just to get the revenue from selling Oculus hardware, but I still don't see what their plan would be for integrating that hardware into their existing business model. I can definitely see how a natural-language API would fit in.

But I didn't say they could do anything to a person- I said they could lie to them. It doesn't matter how sure you are that someone is a suspect for something like this, because nobody's rights are being infringed.
