dylanz··on Aggressive Chess Openings (2012)
That opening is amazing! I’ve never seen it before. Super aggressive and very aesthetic!
dylanz··on Twilio Super SIM
I actually like alternative solutions listed when something is posted on HN that I know nothing about. It's obviously best when the poster does some homework and lists the largest differentiators. I've seen the question "how is this different to X?" used, more often than not, in more of a combative context however where the user defends an alternative and then points negatively at the original.

Just my $0.02 and I"m sure there's a better format that could be used, just not sure what that is exactly :)

dylanz··on Show HN: Festival Hunt – Discover, filter and sort music festivals
Where does the data come from, and, why isn't Dirtybird Campout on the list?
dylanz··on Apple iPhone SE Available on Apple Store Again
I'd love for Apple to keep the SE up-to-date hardware wise. The only thing that I'd like more than that would be if Google brought back a new and improved G1. The HN crowd isn't the average consumer, and I know that's why what most of us really want isn't a reality, but... I appreciate reading the sentiment on here for the classics (those which have great function/style).
dylanz··on I stopped using Intercom
Is this with their current pricing? We had huge bills for a while but their last pricing change ended up saving us a ton. Our bill went from about $2k/mo to about $300/mo. Before that we had implemented a custom job that kept our user count down, but we don't need to run that anymore.
dylanz··on I stopped using Intercom
We use Intercom for support and push SQL's into Pipedrive. It works great. It keeps Pipedrive clean and our Sales people focused on real opportunities. We use Intercom a lot for its "segments", and do a lot of personal mail from there. For example, we hosted a drink-up in Copenhagen one day and was able to quickly shoot an email to all customers living there in about 2 minutes. I used a filter to identify who hasn't used the app in a while, remembered their names, and inquired when I met them. I dig it for that.
dylanz··on I stopped using Intercom
He last used Intercom 3 years ago but is just writing about it now. A LOT has changed in 3 years.

I’ve used the product on multiple projects over the years and it’s matured a lot over time. We use it as a support tool and a way to identify qualified leads. It’s also handles our targeted email campaigns. Their support staff is incredibly on point as well. I personally think it’s a fantastic way to engage customers. Seeing that little bubble in the corner of every site kinda drives me crazy, but I know where to go if I have a question.

dylanz··on Saying Goodbye to Louisville
This is absolutely incredible. Did they not weather test it before rolling this out across the city? Did city workers know what what these marks were so as to not to cut across these lines doing routine road work? I wonder if any of these removal/repair costs are going to fall on the city or if Google is taking care of it? This is a pretty amazing story.
dylanz··on Ike Jime, the Japanese Slaughter Method for Tastier Fish
I believe all of the best sushi places in Japan have their own ideal "recipe" for serving fish, and none of it is fresh. Flavor and textures start maturing in fish as the initial stages of fermentation start, much like how the flavor of bread changes the longer it has time to slowly prove.
dylanz··on Israel airport security stole my laptop
I was traveling through Istanbul and there were multiple tiers of security before reaching my plane. One of the checkpoints was run by private security, and they took my laptop out of my bag and asked me a ton of questions. They asked me to open my computer and log in so they can review data in my machine.

Lucky for me, my laptop was completely out of battery, so when they opened my MBP, all they saw was the red blinking battery symbol. They mumbled to each other under their breathes, handed me my laptop, and waved me through.

dylanz··on Tensorflow 2.0 Preview
It gets a lot of hate on HN when compared to React/Vue/etc, but I used it for years and it was a breathe of fresh air coming from raw JS. I think a lot of people on HN form opinions on software and its landscape without actually using it or interacting with its community (outside of HN).
dylanz··on Fridge 0.2
Lactose free has a lot longer shelf life: https://chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/34884/why-does...

dylanz··on The Largest Vocabulary in Hip Hop (2014)
I wonder if when they count in Kool Keith they also factor in Dr. Octogon, Black Elvis, Dr. Dooom, etc, etc. If they did I bet he’d be a lot higher.
dylanz··on Crossplane – Open Source Multicloud Control Plane
Very similar. Can someone more familiar with Crossplane/KEP comment?
dylanz··on Researchers “see” through walls using ambient Wi-Fi signals and a smartphone
Modern day Van Eck phreaking!
dylanz··on Lab-Made Whiskey, Lab-Made Wine
If you’re in LA, I’d recommend visiting the Lost Spirits Distillery for their tour. It’s 1/3 tasting, 1/3 science lesson, 1/3 Mr. Toads Wild Ride. A great experience and their products are absolutely fantastic.
dylanz··on Upgrading GitHub from Rails 3.2 to 5.2
I'd love to know what other frameworks would be easier. It's all relative. I've been involved in upgrades of a lot of statically typed projects, in many languages, and... it's all the same. Major upgrades are always a pain in the ass.
dylanz··on Hands on with Linkerd 2.0
I’ve tried to install Istio on two clusters (at different points in time) and ran into blockers both times. YMMV.
dylanz··on Details of horrific first voyages in transatlantic slave trade revealed
I made it through 1/4 of the article and couldn’t take the reading experience. I’m on an iPhone and it was nonstop ads and odd breaks in content. Bummed!
dylanz··on Tackling youth unemployment by growing mushrooms from coffee waste
Not OP but I have a bunch of books from Paul Stamets who is pretty much the mushroom king. I think one of them is very much a “how-to”.
dylanz··on A treasure trove of skate culture is being saved
My first trip to SF was a solo trip (20 years ago) to skate all the classic spots in the city. EMB, Hubba, Pier 7, etc.

I remember getting off Bart in the middle of the city and having no idea where I was. This guy skates by as I’m standing there looking clueless and asks if I needed help finding any spots. Once he realized it was my first time in the city, he spent the “entire” day showing me around to every spot. At the end of the day I bought him a sandwich and he pulled out a giant blunt (I used to smoke).

One of my favorite memories of skateboarding and of SF.

dylanz··on Show HN: Posthook – Job Scheduling as a Service
We do something similar at Iron.io but with Docker containers.
dylanz··on Scooter startup Bird is seeking a $2B valuation
Lime just dumped 140 scooters in Santa Barbara and they immediately got impounded. The city is going to charge them a $100 fine for each scooter. I'm assuming that's a drop in the bucket compared to their revenue and the cost of working out adoption specifics with local government.
dylanz··on Ditch the Batteries: Off-Grid Compressed Air Energy Storage
I'm not knowledgeable about any of this, but how does this compare to a Trompe? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trompe

dylanz··on My Favorite PostgreSQL Queries and Why They Matter
“Make your queries difficult for the server and easy for you”... that’s a great quote. We’re a bit more fragile!
dylanz··on Chinese police use facial recognition tech to arrest suspect at a pop concert
I know someone who works at CarpeData, and the agents just search through Facebook/Twitter/etc all day. A lot of low hanging fruit!
dylanz··on Electric Sheep on Ubuntu Linux 17.10
Holy sh*t... you’re serious! I used to run this 10+ years ago and honestly hadn’t heard a reference to it since. If it wasn’t for your comment (which I initially thought was sarcasm), I wouldn’t be digging in again. Thank you!

Edit: you’re Scott. I had no idea :) Much respect and thank you for all the work you did on the project! My kids are getting installs soon.

dylanz··on Electric Sheep on Ubuntu Linux 17.10
Cryptonomicon and Snow Crash are probably in my top 5 favorite books of all time. Enjoy the read!
