dylanz··on The New Ten-Factor Authentication Processes
I think the UK uses AWS QLDB to issue vehicle ownership. I don’t know if VIN’s are recognized globally, but I really appreciate that non-repudiation use of the blockchain.
dylanz··on The curious tale of a Nintendo UK Hotliner during the console war era
When I was about 9 years old I found a cheat code in a game. I forgot the game, but it was the famous up+up+down+down… etc, but backwards. I called Nintendo Power and talked to one of the reps there. They didn’t know about this one! They got my information and sent me a box with a copy of the game, a free years subscription to the magazine, and a tshirt. I was a VERY happy kid.

I also used to “fix” games for the local video store. Qtips and rubbing alcohol.

dylanz··on Business Essentials
I just signed up for Fleetsmith yesterday, so this is pretty timely. I'm interested to see if/how this changes things.
dylanz··on Lesser-known Postgres features
It's worth to note that earlier versions of PostgreSQL didn't include the "AS NOT MATERIALIZED" option when specifying CTE's. In our setup, this had huge hits to performance. If we were on a more recent version of PostgreSQL (I think 11 in this case), or if the query writer just used a sub-query instead of a CTE, we would have been fine.
dylanz··on China’s noisy ‘dancing grannies’ silenced by device that disables speakers
Crash pads. It’s what boulderers (climbers who climb smaller technical routes) use to fall on. They usually have straps and you wear them like backpacks.
dylanz··on PostgreSQL 14
If you're on a single node, probably something like this. This is what my "friend" is doing later this week. He's migrating from 9.5 to 13:

    sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://apt.postgresql.org/pub/repos/apt $(lsb_release -cs)-pgdg main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pgdg.list'
    wget --quiet -O - https://www.postgresql.org/media/keys/ACCC4CF8.asc | sudo apt-key add -
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt install postgresql-13
    sudo service postgresql stop
    sudo mkdir -p /secure/pgsql13/data
    sudo chown -R postgres:postgres /secure/pgsql13/data
    sudo -u postgres /usr/lib/postgresql/13/bin/initdb -D /secure/pgsql13/data
    sudo rm -rf /var/lib/postgresql/13/main
    sudo ln -s /secure/pgsql13/data /var/lib/postgresql/13/main
    sudo chown -hR postgres:postgres /var/lib/postgresql/13/main
    sudo ln -s /etc/postgresql/9.5/main/postgresql.conf /var/lib/postgresql/9.5/main/postgresql.conf
    sudo chown -hR postgres:postgres /etc/postgresql/9.5/main/postgresql.conf
    cd /tmp
    sudo -u postgres time /usr/lib/postgresql/13/bin/pg_upgrade --old-bindir /usr/lib/postgresql/9.5/bin --new-bindir /usr/lib/postgresql/13/bin --old-datadir /var/lib/postgresql/9.5/main --new-datadir /var/lib/postgresql/13/main --link --check
    sudo -u postgres time /usr/lib/postgresql/13/bin/pg_upgrade --old-bindir /usr/lib/postgresql/9.5/bin --new-bindir /usr/lib/postgresql/13/bin --old-datadir /var/lib/postgresql/9.5/main --new-datadir /var/lib/postgresql/13/main --link
    sudo service postgresql start 13
    sudo -u postgres "/usr/lib/postgresql/13/bin/vacuumdb" --all -j 32 --analyze-only
    sudo -u postgres ./delete_old_cluster.sh
dylanz··on Why we picture bombs as round black balls with a burning wick (2016)
It was Spy vs Spy for me
dylanz··on I interviewed Brian J. Fox, the creator of Bash
If you're ever in Santa Barbara, check out his band: https://chillpointband.com. They rock.
dylanz··on Launch YC S21: Meet the Batch, Thread #8
That’s a great explanation. It’s why the DMV uses AWS QLDB to track vehicle ownership. I think data that is highly valuable and transactional, and/or highly contestable, is a great fit for blockchain/ledger storage. There’s business continuity elements at play as well. It will get more popular over time.
dylanz··on Activision Blizzard Hires Notorious Union-Busting Firm WilmerHale
I’d recommend Grim Dawn over PoE personally.
dylanz··on Ask HN: Introduction to Analog Synthesizers (Simulation OK)
I highly recommend Syntorial: https://www.syntorial.com/
dylanz··on Ask HN: Best “I brought down production” story?
Not me, but I had to wake up at 3:00am and fix it. Someone ran “User.destroy_all” in a production Rails console. This was a social network for a ‘well know sports agency’. Production console’s are a sharp tool. Be careful who you hand them to.
dylanz··on Details of yesterday's Bunny CDN outage
That was an incredible story, and I went down a rabbit hole of reading more about that disease. Thank you very much for sharing.
dylanz··on Submarine Cable Map 2021
"Vietnam veteran Doug Shaftoe, the son of Bobby Shaftoe, and his daughter Amy, do the undersea surveying for the cables and engineering work on the haven, which is overseen by Goto Furudenendu, heir-apparent to Goto Engineering". My all time favorite book.
dylanz··on The Endless Acid Banger: algorithmic self-composing acid techno music
Propellerhead, right? I remember opening Reason for the first time (I had no experience with music hardware) and was completely lost. I played around with knobs for a long time trying to make sounds with limited luck. Then I clicked something and the entire rack flipped around and there were patch cables hanging there that I could plug anywhere. I think I plugged things into different holes, the one sound I had going stopped, then I quit the program :)

I eventually ended up reading the manual and getting the hang of it. My friend turned me on to it, and he had it mastered. He produced house music and frequently toured the world with Mark Farina back in the day.

dylanz··on Dvorak vs Colemak (2010-2020)
I'm at about 15 years with Dvorak as well. It completely healed my RSI issues which were getting quite bad. Learning it was a mental challenge and re-learning Vim wasn't really fun.

I could type around 90 WPM in QWERTY and now I hunt and pick at it. I'm at that speed in Dvorak now so it doesn't really matter. If you play games at all it kind of sucks having to switch back and forth, but that's a small price to pay to not have career ending RSI.

dylanz··on Soil bacteria could improve crop yields, via fungi
Great book! I’ll always remember his lazy cultivation technique of creating “seed balls” consisting of various seeds and mud, and just tossing them down a hillside.

The one thing I appreciate most about Permaculture and techniques like those that Fukuoka deployed, are how the focus is on how to maximize yield and minimize effort.

dylanz··on How to Build a Web App with and Without Rails Libraries
... and a good resource for network programming is the classic "Beej's Guide to Network Programming": https://beej.us/guide/bgnet/
dylanz··on Why are fewer men in their 20s having sex?
The scenario of not wanting to bring a child into an environment that isn't stable is exactly one of the points of the intro to the movie Idiocracy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP2tUW0HDHA

I definitely understand 100%... I just thought it sounded extremely familiar. In my personal scenario, I had my first kid (unplanned) when I was 25. It definitely changed the trajectory of my life, and in a good way in my case. Once I knew I was having a kid I really started to take things more seriously and tried to set up as good of an environment as I could. That meant studying a lot, surrounding myself with good families, moving into a place with more exposure to nature, etc. We never owned a home, had retirement saved up, or a lot of the other things one would consider good "nest egg" scenarios. We just made it work when we had to, and have 2 awesome teenagers now.

dylanz··on Diablo II: Resurrected
Grim Dawn is absolutely amazing. I tried playing PoE but it felt so fake. Grim Dawn is raw and dark, the dual class system is awesome, and that’s exactly what I was looking for.
dylanz··on u/DeepFuckingValue and the GameStop Reddit mania
There is no misinformation in there. It's average people buying, and the market is doing its thing. The eye-opening part of this is how brokerages like Robinhood are reacting.
dylanz··on Building a $400 at-home DIY spin bike for Peloton and Apple Fitness+
I bought one and I don't consider myself an idiot... pal. Thank you very much.

I have a pretty big background in fitness (studied/taught martial arts for 15 years, coached(L1) Crossfit, was a powerlifter and also an amateur olympic lifter for a few years). I like fighting, lifting heavy, and I personally hate cardio. I live in a city that gets cold, and the Peloton sits in my room and I constantly jump on it and get my heart rate up daily. I've lost 20 pounds in the last 4 months.

Before this purchase I had never been to a spin class in my life. I'd rather bike than run, because I'm lazy and I appreciate sitting down. The Peloton classes are great and they have HIIT, EMOM's, long distance rides, and their "Power Zone" stuff guides you through hitting your VO2max, Lactate Threshold, etc.

I already have a home gym, and the bike cost + $40/mo for classes makes it so I don't have get a gym membership and drive to a gym since I can do everything at home. Plus, there are gorgeous women motivating me to work.

You may not be the ideal customer for this product, but don't call those that are idiots.

dylanz··on Running Docker on Apple Silicon M1 (Follow-Up)
I've never been able to run Docker on my MacBook Pro without the CPU's going crazy and the energy usage skyrocketing. I opened a ticket about it, but there have been other related tickets that have been closed without any real resolution: https://github.com/docker/for-mac/issues/4323

It unfortunately prevents me from using Docker for local development. I'm hoping things change with M1.

dylanz··on I spent eleven years working on this Line Rider track
Whoa. As someone who used to "play around" with Line Rider back in the day, I had no idea that was actually possible. That end sequence was amazing! The music score on the ascent was a perfect match. I felt like I was watching the final scene of a James Bond movie or something.

I was just about to ask you what the last item was in the track (that meme) but realized I didn't actually read your blog post and just watched the video. WHOA. Major, major props for such a great post to accompany the video with. I'm sharing this with everyone my age that knows what Line Rider is :)

dylanz··on Show HN: Predict a Reddit user's Myers-Briggs type from their profile
Classic! I ran my own Reddit username first, and then read about my result (I know nothing about these personality types). It was pretty accurate to be honest. Then I immediately went back to that page to look up /u/shittymorph, but the page wouldn't load. I'm assuming they're getting hammered by traffic right now, and hoping they'll be able to serve more traffic due to the fact that in 1998, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table.

Edit: Sorry I had to. The point being that after reading through multiple types of these results, mine was 100% spot on compared to 2nd-5th place.

dylanz··on Show HN: Mimestream, a native macOS email client for Gmail
I'm a Mailplane user as well and once (if) I move to Catalina I'd love to check it out. What would you say are the benefits to Mimestream over Mailplane?
dylanz··on Sid Meier: “I don’t think I could make Civilisation today”
I’ve been watching Potato McWhiskey on YouTube (his games, not streams). He plays Civ6 and talks about all his moves as he plays. It’s almost more fun to watch him play than it is to play myself. After watching his videos I pretty much know every mechanic in the game and it all makes sense now.

Without his videos however, I’d be clicking through and reading the Civopedia for hours.

Having a virtual mentor via video can turn impossible games into possible games, and the path to getting there is really fun.

dylanz··on Launch HN: Slapdash (YC W19) – A uniform, low-latency interface for cloud apps
How do guys afford quarterly pen-tests as a start up?
dylanz··on Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses
I receive incorrect email daily because of this. Early adopter problem for early Gmail users. I could have had my first name at Gmail back in the day but I thought “what’s wrong with Hotmail!?”. Same thing for Twitter, but I still don’t use Twitter. I could have probably sold it for a pretty penny though. Hindsight!
dylanz··on Bash IRC Quote Database
Classic! This is one I clearly remember reading ages ago.
