dylanvee··on Life as a Product Design Intern at Khan Academy
After my internship I worked part-time while finishing up my last year of school, then joined full-time after graduating.
dylanvee··on Life as a Product Design Intern at Khan Academy
I joined Khan Academy as an intern in summer 2012 and have been with the company ever since. We're not going to top Facebook, but I can assure you that we compensate interns competitively. Given the massive contributions that interns like Elizabeth have made, nothing else would make sense to me.

dylanvee··on Hiring Summer Interns? How to Make the Most of Them
What's cool about our industry is that interns can contribute a lot, on or soon after day one.

By the same turn, it's also much easier to propose and make corrections. If I discover an error in my computer graphics textbook, I'd have to...call the publisher and see if they can fix it in the next edition, I guess. Perhaps the textbook industry's fixation on keeping students buying the newest editions of their books has actual benefits...

dylanvee··on Issue 8788 - Every day around 9 AM Brussels time, huge drop in GAE performance
You're correct--because we have a Premier account, which anyone else can obtain too: https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/premier/
dylanvee··on Issue 8788 - Every day around 9 AM Brussels time, huge drop in GAE performance
There's nothing about Khan Academy's application (or any other customer's) that would somehow immunize it from platform-wide serving issues.
dylanvee··on Issue 8788 - Every day around 9 AM Brussels time, huge drop in GAE performance
Yep. We (Khan Academy) have a lot riding on App Engine, and they are supportive when we run into issues with the platform.
dylanvee··on How Stripe built one of Silicon Valley’s best engineering teams
I'm talking about the internships offered by many tech companies to college students, which are always paid (often very competitively). I'm a student, and have benefited from these myself, but I'd imagine that from an employer's perspective hosting interns is a relatively low-risk way to get to know some potential full-time candidates pretty well.
dylanvee··on How Stripe built one of Silicon Valley’s best engineering teams
Whither internships? The best way to find out if you like working with someone is to go ahead and work with them for a little bit.
dylanvee··on Linux 3.8 Released
I don't remember specifically, but that'd be my guess. Non-root users in containers have been fine for a while now.
dylanvee··on Linux 3.8 Released
Yes.
dylanvee··on Linux 3.8 Released
Container-based virtualization is already here, but without user namespaces root privilege in the container implies root privilege in the host. That's no longer the case; interesting times indeed.
dylanvee··on Heroku Blog: Routing Performance Update
"Pending request latency arises when all of your application's available instances are too busy to serve new requests. When this happens, incoming requests go to a pending request queue." https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/adminconsole/pe...

Pending latency is exposed as a metric on the App Engine Dashboard.

dylanvee··on Heroku Blog: Routing Performance Update
Indeed, while having a global request queue is good, the scheduler's one-size-fits-all behavior can sometimes be suboptimal. Thankfully there are several ways in which it can be tuned: https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/adminconsole/pe...
dylanvee··on Heroku Blog: Routing Performance Update
For what it's worth, Google App Engine uses a so-called "intelligent" global request queue/scheduler. In most circumstances it's quite effective.
dylanvee··on Gmail phone calls remain free of charge in 2013 for US and Canada
I could make myself remember to special-case you fairly easily, but I really don't want to have to special-case anyone. That's why I love iMessage--it's a progressive enhancement, not a separate app. When that breaks down, like when I can't fall back to SMS when sending from my Mac, I get annoyed.
dylanvee··on What are Google's long-term plans for Google App Engine?
(Khan Academy dev here.) The datastore being a black box is a slight concern to me personally, but the really great tradeoff is letting Google handle the responsibility of keeping our persistence layer, among many other services, up and running. They're quite good at doing that.
dylanvee··on Twitter Starts Rolling Out Option To Download Your Twitter Archive In One File
I interviewed with a Twitter search engineer and he told me that that's because their in-memory search index is not big enough hold all tweets ever posted. On top of that, their efforts to scale up the index are counteracted by the ever-increasing volume of tweets posted per day.

dylanvee··on Facebook Hackathon Finals post-mortem
No, we don't plan to. Before every hackathon we get these delusions of grandeur about evolving our upcoming hack into a thriving business, but the morning after we're always left with, well, a big hack.

dylanvee··on The Quiet Ones
At my internship last summer, several devs were partial to those super-clacky keyboards one can buy. I can't stand working without (or even with) headphones in places like cafes when loud conversations are going on around me, but I found the keyboard sounds very easy to tune out.
