dxuh··on SDL3 new GPU API merged
Unreal/Unity are not the only solutions. There is also bgfx (https://github.com/bkaradzic/bgfx), which is quite popular and sokol gfx (https://github.com/floooh/sokol) which I know of. Of course there are many more lesser known ones.
dxuh··on SIMD Matters: Graph Coloring
With graphics you mostly prepare everything you want to render and then transfer all of it to the GPU. Physics still lends itself fairly well to GPU acceleration as well (compared to other things), but simply preparing something, transferring it to the GPU and being done is not enough. You need to at least get it back, even just to render it, but likely also to have gameplay depend on it. And with graphics programming the expensive part is often the communication between the CPU and the GPU and trying to avoid synchronization (especially with the old graphics APIs), so transferring there and back is expensive. Also physics code is full of branches, while graphics usually is not. GPUs (or rather really wide vectorization generally) don't like branches much and if you do only certain parts of the physics simulation on the GPU, then you need to transfer there and back (and synchronize) even more. I'm just a hobby gamedev and I know that people have done physics on the GPU (PhysX), but to me the things I mentioned sound like big hurdles.

EDIT: one more big thing is also that at least for AAA games you want to keep the GPU doing graphics so it looks good. You usually never have GPU cycles to spare.

I have worked in the telco industry for a while and am now working on interfacing with programmable logic controllers. My primary interests are network programming and game development, but I am open to other challenges if they give me an opportunity to grow and develop myself as a programmer. My interests are diverse, as showcased by my portfolio of personal projects, which can be found at https://theshoemaker.de/projects. Generally though, I am mostly interested in systems programming roles.

dxuh··on A network engineer in search of greener pastures
I tried it in the not so distant past and it just seemed to just be a great way to spend way more time on each application and then get rejected automatically by some bot as well.
dxuh··on Braid: Anniversary Edition "sold like dog s***", says creator Jonathan Blow
Usually remasters make sense if some big value is added or the game is so old that new assets massively improve the experience. I don't believe Braid belongs to the latter, so the main value add to the game is developer commentary, which I have heard from multiple places, is phenomenal, but who really cares about developer commentary? I think it's almost exclusively other game developers, of which there are just not enough to generate massive sales.
dxuh··on Ask HN: How do you go about finding a job?
Where do you look for job postings? I figure this is very dependent on location.
dxuh··on Nearly 2M metric tons of wild fish used to feed Norwegian farmed salmon annually
You are correct that soy bean protein is complete and the protein is of high quality, but it's a pet peeve of mine when people talk about protein completeness, as it is essentially false dichotomy. There is a (multi-dimensional) continuum of protein completeness in the sense that the amino acid profile doesn't just have to contain every essential amino acid, but has to contain it in the right amount, as is required by the average human being.

Soy protein for example is particularly low in Methionine and Cystine. If your goal is to get enough of those, you might have to eat three times as much soy as for example egg whites (by weight). But similarly soy protein has more Tryptophan than beef. "Completeness" is a binary that is not quite sufficient to describe protein quality.

There is a reason whey and egg proteins are more popular among strength athletes for example, as they are richer in leucine, which seems to be the limiting amino acid in muscle building.

I still think we should eat way less meat and soy is a very high quality substitute for it.

dxuh··on I Miss BSD/Linux
Would you mind sharing some of the settings you changed there?
dxuh··on QBE – Compiler Back End
I don't know much about compiler development, but this seems pretty high level to me. Why would I not just compile to C and get almost all the same benefits, except it being small and hackable, but TCC is that too. And if you compile to C you can target even more architectures.
dxuh··on Atomic nucleus excited with laser: A breakthrough after decades
There is a big difference between "classical" quantum mechanics (about 100 years old now!) and quantum field theory (~50 years old). Maybe that's what they mean?
dxuh··on Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years
I don't have nearly the same amount of experience with Rust (just a few months of hobby coding), but whenever people looked at me, all surprised, that I don't like Rust that much I always just said "Safety is not the most important thing for everything. For the stuff I am doing I'd rather be quick", but this article is the most thorough way of explaining that I have seen with lots of extra stuff I had no idea about before. Also the extra random gamedev links in the middle were great, but it took me well over a full, focused hour to read. It is thorough, but some more brevity might have helped, I think.

dxuh··on Good times create weak men (2019)
The man develops video games to be sold and played by other people. His primary target is Windows, so he develops on Windows.
dxuh··on Why decline in generalists leads to disjointed games and harms tool quality
I consider myself a generalist and companies just do not like to hire those. The vast majority of companies doesn't even advertise jobs that are not specialized. And of course this generates some kind of force on the market, because there is no incentive to become one and a strong incentive to specialize instead.
dxuh··on Sessionic: A cross-browser extension to save, manage, restore tabs and sessions
I visit HackerNews and immediately see a few posts I find interesting and open them in background tabs. I'm scared to just read one and then go back to the home page, because it might have disappeared or changed the title or something like that. Then I read one or two of the open tabs, get distracted and do something else. That nets +3-+5 tabs. Repeat the same on reddit and YouTube. The fear of hitting the back button is much worse on those sites.

The other kind of tab-explosion is when I am doing something specific, like researching some topic and open tabs end up being stuff that I deemed worth reading or that remains a to-read. And often enough I don't come back to them and they just sit around. As soon as even more tabs have piled up to make them disappear across the tab bar, they are almost lost in my open tabs forever.

Also I am not addicted to heroin, but I can understand that people can get there and can't get out. I keep a very clean apartment, but I understand that not everyone can. I go to the gym 5-6 times a week, but I understand that not everyone can. I consider it part of becoming an adult to understand that not everyone finds it easy to do things you yourself find easy to do.

dxuh··on Calorie restriction in humans builds strong muscle and stimulates healthy aging
I do 4 meals at 40g each. Only one of those meals has a single scoop of whey protein (I add it to my pre-workout oats). Though all the meals usually revolve around some high protein source like cottage cheese, skyr, eggs and of course chicken breast. YouTube is full of high protein recipes (look for bodybuilding "full day of eating" videos and the like). Some channels just produce a ton of videos with anabolic recipes (jclarkefitness, felu and pretty much every major fitness influencer).
dxuh··on Finding a Tech Job Is Still a Nightmare
What does being strategic about it mean to you? Just searching outside of San Francisco? Because I have only searched inside the EU and I find it quite difficult.
dxuh··on Finding a Tech Job Is Still a Nightmare
My experience is not like that at all and I feel like it's messed up in a weird way. I applied to dozens of companies recently and I never got a positive response, mostly automated rejections (both small-ish and larger companies).

The only companies that I ended up in talks with were companies that contacted me and none of those went anywhere (yet) for different reasons. Some of these companies are really cool though.

I am thinking a lot about whether I might just be much worse than I thought (feel free to look at my "Who wants to be hired?" posts in my post history).

dxuh··on LÖVE: a framework to make 2D games in Lua
There is nothing built-in for it per se. I think you just have to sign the application from a postbuild hook, I think. I remember discussing this with the person that contributed the Mac build, but I don't remember the result of the discussion exactly. I think that was it though.
dxuh··on LÖVE: a framework to make 2D games in Lua
There was a time when this was really popular, but most of the löve community has abandoned this to be more accessible to kids and just to look less infantile. I think those names are mostly frowned upon now and many of the popular libs have been in fact renamed.
dxuh··on LÖVE: a framework to make 2D games in Lua
There are some packaging tools that help with distribution (like https://github.com/pfirsich/makelove/ - I made this). What would you like improved?
dxuh··on Caddy is the first and only web server to use HTTPS automatically and by default
I didn't even know about that. Thanks!
dxuh··on Caddy is the first and only web server to use HTTPS automatically and by default
I'm always a bit bothered by them saying they are the "only" web server that can do this. First you can also just configure it in a way where it will not use HTTPS (e.g. if you provide an IP:port instead of a hostname). And if you do require specific configuration to enable HTTPS and automatically get certificates via ACME, then lots of other web servers can do this too. Even my own web server can do it: https://github.com/pfirsich/htcpp (see https://github.com/pfirsich/htcpp/blob/main/configs/acme.jom... for an admittedly much more complicated config).
dxuh··on We built an AI-powered Magic the Gathering card generator
> Magic the Gathering is a collectible card game played with two or more players. Each player starts with a deck of cards and 20 life points and uses those cards to deal damage to the opponent and reduce the life points to 0.

I would never risk the wrath of Mill and Infect players by omitting their favorite win conditions.

If you look at the rules, there are a bunch of win/lose conditions in MTG: https://mtg-archive.fandom.com/wiki/Win_Conditions

dxuh··on Federal study links testicular cancer to ‘forever chemicals’
I agree with you, but as far as I know there is a large gender imbalance (Female to Male is much more common than Male to Female - almost twice as common). How would you explain that?
