dxhdr··on Will Carbon Replace C++?
> 70% of security bugs are memory safety issues. That's a lot of real problems.

Run your code in a WASM sandbox or on a GPU, problem solved.

dxhdr··on Zig's multi-sequence for loops
Now suppose your game runs in a WASM sandbox and re-run those scenarios. What do you gain from bounds checks?

I'm not suggesting that shipping without bounds checks is wise or leads to a better product. However I do think with /some games/ security is basically not a concern.

dxhdr··on Ask HN: Those making $0/month or less on side projects – Show and tell
You're passing on $50k-100k per month of ad revenue from just basic banner ads... at least based on how RPMs were a few years ago. I respect that, definitely not the decision I'd make.
dxhdr··on 1min high-intensity exercise 3x a week improves fitness as much as 3x aerobics (2016)
> The real “myth” of calories in = calories out is that it’s possible to do it by feel. It takes a lot of work and math, like spreadsheet-level, to actually track calories in and out. So even though it is physically true as a concept, it’s not a good weight management strategy for most people.

The real myth is that you can track calories in and calories out.

How do you measure how many calories your body absorbs from the food you eat?

How do you measure your calories out, particularly your resting metabolic rate?

Here's a hint -- the body changes its resting metabolic rate in response to calories in! Probably! Unless you eat junk food, and then maybe it doesn't!

dxhdr··on Why Use Make (2013)
> Using this as an example, are there more modern equivalent tools that may be a bit more user friendly? I appreciate make and I get its age and the complexity and all, it's just sometimes I need something that's simple and explicit, without the historic baggage.

Indenting with tabs too complicated? Let me introduce you to YAML.

dxhdr··on Universal flu vaccine against all known subtypes takes promising first steps
> I am not describing sterilizing immunity, I am saying that the original, and the most common understanding of what a vaccine is is "something that you take that makes you not get sick".

The CDC changed the definition of vaccine on Sept 2, 2021 and removed the reference to immunity.

[2] https://web.archive.org/web/20210902194040/https://www.cdc.g...

And just to preempt your question, every news source reachable via Google says the change has nothing to do with COVID or the effectiveness of the COVID vaccine.

dxhdr··on ‘Breakthrough’ obesity drugs that have stunned researchers
> Try to find any major research showing either diet has a significant health impact on either 1) non-overweight individuals who remain non-overweight; or 2) has a health impact after controlling for changes in weight/obesity/body fat. It's virtually non-existent.

It's common sense.

And also easily provable at the limit: whose healthier at the end of 10 years, subject A consuming 2k calories of salad and lean meat per day, or subject B consuming 2k calories of vodka per day?

At least we know they'll both weigh the same, because thermodynamics, right?

dxhdr··on MelonJS – a fresh and lightweight JavaScript game engine
Disagree; updating the DOM is incredibly slow and will kill your games performance.
dxhdr··on Graph showing level of Covid, flu and RSV in US wastewater systems, by city
> How would you characterize the costs associated with wearing a mask most of the time when in public?

I tried it for a year and it's dehumanizing. Not sure how you'd rate that vs the unknown chance of long covid but I've made my choice.

dxhdr··on Graph showing level of Covid, flu and RSV in US wastewater systems, by city
I'd rather be sick for 2 weeks than wear a mask every day. Surveying those around me I'd say 98% came to the same conclusion.
dxhdr··on How I survived a year in ‘the hole’ without losing my mind

dxhdr··on Rewriting a high performance vector database in Rust
Article also states that the switch from C++ to Rust improves "low level optimized instruction sets, memory layout, and running async tasks."

The first two are also strengths of C++, and for the third the article says that "Rust is async, and Tokio is the one of the most popular async providers ... However, it’s not great for running CPU intensive workloads, like with Pinecone." Puzzling.

dxhdr··on US quietly urges more use of Russia fertilizer to ease food crisis
Meanwhile RUB to USD is at its highest in nearly 5 years. Cutting Russia off from SWIFT has only strengthened their ties to India and China. Russia is still invading Ukraine, and now we're dealing with soaring food and energy prices at home. At some point you have to consider whether this level of diplomatic incompetence is intentional.
dxhdr··on Things you're allowed to do (2020)

dxhdr··on Must be this tall to write multi-threaded code (2015)
> Message-passing is way oversold and doesn't solve as many problems as people think.

My experience with Erlang has been that it solves a great deal of concurrency problems and is way undersold.

dxhdr··on In defense of cryptocurrency
That doesn't invalidate what I said, although maybe I should have said "flat" instead of "fixed" to be more precise.

You pay a flat fee per transaction with Bitcoin, you pay a percentage fee with Mastercard and Visa. Yes, the Bitcoin fee changes with time based on a market. The Mastercard and Visa percentage changes based on how much they like you.

dxhdr··on In defense of cryptocurrency
> If you think Mastercard and Visa fees are too high, fees are higher on Bitcoin.

Mastercard and Visa charge a percentage (?!), Bitcoin is a fixed amount per transaction.

Plus Bitcoin won't deny your ability to make a transaction.

dxhdr··on How do video games stay in sync?
Cool thanks, that makes sense! In my head I was thinking the diff from 2 to 4 would be something like "x += 2, y += 5", and 3 to 6 would be "x += 3, y += 0"... which of course wouldn't be idempotent and wouldn't allow you to apply the update to different client states.
dxhdr··on How do video games stay in sync?
> The idea is that the diffs are idempotent and will take the client to the latest state, as long as we can trust the last ack value. So if it's a diff from 3 to 6, the client could apply that diff in tick 3, 4, 5 or 6, and the final result would be the same.

Can you elaborate or give an example of how this works?

dxhdr··on Reverse engineering Xiaomi air purifier NFC stickers
Good question, I bought a Dylos back in 2015 and can't remember how the other options stacked up when I researched it. I've been happy with the purchase and would recommend it if you're interested in watching air quality. It has a convenient "monitor mode" where it will re-sample the air every hour so it's not constantly running. It's neat to see how the air quality in a room changes based on having the windows open or shut, after cooking, just being in the room, etc.

I'd expect there are smaller / sleeker / more advanced monitors out now though. Generally speaking I think you want a laser detector instead of the cheaper infrared detectors.

dxhdr··on Reverse engineering Xiaomi air purifier NFC stickers
> Do they make a difference? Perhaps a placebo? A must have?

Purchase an air quality monitor, something like the Dylos DC1100. Then run a HEPA filter in a closed room for 30 minutes. It will remove almost all particulates! They work extremely well. Whether it "makes a difference" for your health is less clear.

dxhdr··on Vintage computer ads
Women showing their kids new tech, truly disgusting.

I was actually surprised there were only two photos of "pinup" type girls... and then shortly later, a photo of a naked dude! And then a businesswoman "walking into the light" carrying a PC! I guess I was expecting much worse.

> Mainboard implies there's one main board. Motherboard could be more ambiguous to someone who's never seen the inside of a computer. Are there two boards, mother and father?

Am I crazy or does mainboard strongly imply there's more than one -- eg main, supporting / secondary, etc? Stories have a main character which is almost by definition not the only character in the narrative.

dxhdr··on The tech bubble that never burst
> That's because shadow stats is a joke. If you adjust US GDP using their inflation figures, you'd find that the US economy has been on a continual decline for the past few decades.

Today families need dual incomes just to purchase a modest home and carry health insurance. How is this not a decline in standard of living from a few decades ago?

Where's our new airports? New rail transit systems? New infrastructure? Everything in this country is old and getting older.
