dwhit··on I made an open source Windows app to rewind and search everything on screen
for a less misanthropic take on the same idea, I recommend Ted Chiang’s “The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling”
dwhit··on What will enter the public domain in 2024?
I do think it’s bad that almost everyone will die before any work that influenced them enters the public domain

> I have a few qualms with this app: > 1. For a Linux user, you can already build such a system yourself quite trivially by getting an FTP account, mounting it locally with curlftpfs, and then using SVN or CVS on the mounted filesystem. From Windows or Mac, this FTP account could be accessed through built-in software. > 2. It doesn't actually replace a USB drive. Most people I know e-mail files to themselves or host them somewhere online to be able to perform presentations, but they still carry a USB drive in case there are connectivity problems. This does not solve the connectivity issue. > 3. It does not seem very "viral" or income-generating. I know this is premature at this point, but without charging users for the service, is it reasonable to expect to make money off of this?

Should you get a ticket for accidentally driving over the speed limit because your speedometer was broken? Should the company who made the speedometer get the ticket? What if the speedometer was broken due to a bug software the speedometer company bought? Should that company get the ticket?

dwhit··on I Was Robbed in San Francisco While the Cameras Rolled
It’s just Hacker News confirmation bias. San Francisco has roughly the same level of property crime per capita as Toronto, Canada.
dwhit··on 'Zoom towns' are exploding in the West

dwhit··on Facebook account banned after linking Oculus account

dwhit··on The Post Office Is Deactivating Mail Sorting Machines Ahead of the Election
Do not ever allow an election for who gets to control the nukes be decided by an e-vote. I don’t want Boaty McBoatface to be the president.
dwhit··on [dead]
Wow what a fair and balanced headline.
dwhit··on Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone
Baltimore police are not exactly inactive, they are more like an organized gang (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.baltimoresun.com/maryland/b...).
dwhit··on Shopify Goes Digital by Default
If you don’t need to be near Manhattan you don’t need to live there. Or maybe your loud neighbors won’t need to live there. Ceteris paribus working from home kinda sucks, but if you think about how many systems will change, I think it’s gonna get better.
dwhit··on Why We Think Galaxy Folds Are Failing
Current non-foldable phones have gorilla glass on top of their display.
dwhit··on I Now Have a Cardiologist
A toilet that monitored urine and stool samples would be a major lifesaver.
