dwayne_dibley··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
Agreed. That should be the focus of any user interface.
dwayne_dibley··on Mozilla to shut down Pocket on July 8
Huh, that’s annoying. Been using pocket since around 2008, mainly for when I was abroad and roaming was costly. Looks like I’ll need to export my library of stuff.

Do I have any other similar options?

dwayne_dibley··on CERN gears up to ship antimatter across Europe
I designed some of the kit in that building! (Specifically for the alpha G experiment) Super proud of it.
dwayne_dibley··on How to Build a Smartwatch: Picking a Chip
I too would miss GPS, BUT I've still never found anything that really fills the pebble shaped hole in my life. My Garmin compromises the other stuff (battery, widgets, calendar, display readability etc.).

Everything is a trade off.

dwayne_dibley··on The Friendship Recession: The lost art of connecting
That’s true, I regularly remember going to pubs, friends houses and sporting events that I was far to young to be at, but was just there because my parents where doing a thing.
dwayne_dibley··on BS 1363 British Plugs and Sockets
My only issue with the plug is 3. sort of. I prefer the cable being perpendicular to the plug (prevents accidental removal), but I wish there was a standard dictating which way it should leave relative to the earth pin. Drives me mad when plugging in items to an extension lead and they all come off in different directions.
dwayne_dibley··on Ask HN: Do you still use search engines?
I think the kids today use TikTok and such for searching, which is mental.
dwayne_dibley··on The Alexa feature "do not send voice recordings" you enabled no longer available
This reads more like, 'they're not very good' rather than 'people don't want them'. They could be hugely useful, and even in their current capacity I find are very much so.

I find it maddening that my google home, hasn't got a single bit better in the 8 years since it's release, and it's now missing some of my favourite features it had at launch. The whole market has been stagnate ever since they convinced me to put a microphone in my house, it's almost as if that was their end game.

dwayne_dibley··on The Alexa feature "do not send voice recordings" you enabled no longer available
I think the audience here might be ok with '"enthusiast" (aka nerd) territory' hardware.
dwayne_dibley··on Trees not profits: we're giving up our right to ever sell Ecosia (2018)
Same, they really need a better landing page.
dwayne_dibley··on Age and cognitive skills: Use it or lose it

dwayne_dibley··on macOS Tips and Tricks (2022)
'Mac OS brings to top all windows of the respective app' - I bloody hate this behaviour.
dwayne_dibley··on All Kindles can now be jailbroken
old.reddit is the only reddit.
dwayne_dibley··on All Kindles can now be jailbroken
I'm still daily using my kobo touch from 2011, my oldest piece of 'still in use tech' (other than the Wii, which the kids still bowl on!).

Not being bound to an ecosystem, has really been a blessing - and in part kept it in use.

dwayne_dibley··on Ask HN: Books about people who did hard things
I really enjoyed 'How big things get done' [1], which is close to your 'how things.... got built' requirement. Very interesting read about delivery of really big projects. I also read 'Built'[2] which was a little more relatable about civil engineering, specifically the Shard in London. And finally 'Build' by Tony Fadell but this didn't quite hit the mark for me as it was more a memoir about how great he is.

especially given the low view counts. I've just watched two videos with 1 view. One would assume if they were being uploaded to be shared they'd have more views.
dwayne_dibley··on Advent of Code 2024
Is this any good for beginners/kids?
dwayne_dibley··on In Praise of Print: Reading Is Essential in an Era of Epistemological Collapse
I thought you were exaggerating until I clicked the link.
dwayne_dibley··on Apple's M4 Max chip is the fastest single-core performer in consumer computing
How impressed should I be. In terms of Apples history of manufacturing chips compared to, say, intel. This is their 4th generation of the M chip and it seems to be so far ahead of intel, a company with significant bigger history of chip production.
dwayne_dibley··on New iMac with M4
This surprises me I have a 2013 iMac that is solely used as an external monitor. Did they take a step backwards ?
dwayne_dibley··on Smartphone buyers meh on AI, care much more about battery life
Same boat. 'upgraded' my iphone mini to a 15 and hate it. Far far to big.
dwayne_dibley··on First images from Euclid are in
ISn't the doubt simply the 'when' rather than the 'if'?
dwayne_dibley··on First images from Euclid are in
I work with a lot of space engineers and it blows my tiny mind when they explain that they've got decades of wait from production to operations. Space truly is a collaborative effort.
dwayne_dibley··on Experimental web browser optimized for rabbit-holing
Love this idea.
dwayne_dibley··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
'umms' and 'errs' are so good.
dwayne_dibley··on I Designed a Dieter Rams Inspired iPhone Dock
Bambu Labs A1 - not had it long, but for less that £300 it's unbelievable, easily matching quality with the prusas on the type of stuff I'm printing.
dwayne_dibley··on Show HN: An open-source implementation of AlphaFold3
Hi, how are predictions verified? Does one still do experimental techniques (X-ray crystallography, cryogenic-em etc.) one you have the prediction? Or are predictions so close to reality you can progress without experiment?
dwayne_dibley··on UK launches its first Earth-imaging military satellite
Ah, another excellent benefit.
dwayne_dibley··on Google and Meta struck secret ads deal to target teenagers
I mean they can often be useful.
dwayne_dibley··on The Microsoft Excel superstars throw down in Vegas
Usually databases. 8/10 times I see excel used badly is when it should have been access.
