Been doing tech since the Apple II days. Playing in the manufacturing space with EV's currently.

And yeah, I totally fail Leetcode interviews.

He hasn't gotten to an in person interview stage yet.

He just did something that was game related and has been playing with some graphics stuff. His degree game related CS.

I had a job search as well and same. Previous slam dunks that stalled at final interviews with someone who had a higher recommendation.

Fortunately I have some unique skills that allowed me to land a gig.

Thanks, it's been tough on him. I'm glad we're able to support him through this, others are not as fortunate.

He's looking into pivots now and taking flight lessons.

It's brutal, my son with a CS degree hasn't been able to get to single live interview ina year. A couple of screens has been it. I've reached out to my network, and the reply is always we're not hiring any juniors.
dver··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
I'm past mid life, but my fall back cars to my youth have been convertibles. The last round being SLK's.

dver··on Ask HN: Real name vs. Anonymous Username – Which do you use online and Why?
A couple of places I used my real name since I had no issue, or invite contacts.

Anywhere where I think my opinions might affect my income I stay anonymous. My name combo is very unique, so anything I post would be related to me.

Honestly it's a small world and anything could be sourced, just making it less casual.

dver··on Ask HN: Have you ever taken a career break or gap year to hack?
In my 60's now, in my late 20's due to a layoff I ended up taking a year long "Sabbatical".

It wasn't planned and I didn't have the finances setup but I made it work and spent my time doing volunteer work, some personal spiritual exploration and low cost travel.

Granted, single, no one needing me for anything, so your mileage may vary.

For me, best decision ever. I really enjoyed getting to point of not knowing what day it was.

dver··on The economy is going great, except for the housing market
I was interviewed by the Union Trib in the late 80's about home affordability.

Between the Sunshine Tax and thin strip of land that everyone wants to live in, and there is no solution to affordability. (Except the usual go So Cal go east until the price drops)

dver··on Ask HN: What is the most expensive off-the-shelf software you have seen?
As other have said, PLM and CAD tools are very pricey.

Palantir is a recent hight water mark I've seen as well.

dver··on Google Pixel Buds Pro 2
I was seeing the same with my Pixel Buds. I've started to give them a little extra nudge when I put them back in the case and that has seemed to eliminated the issue for me.
dver··on Panic at the Job Market
If you're "supposed to know", I would assume enough use to not need to brush up. Brushing up implies not used enough to keep in the mental model.
dver··on Ask HN: Midlife crisis, which direction to go with?
Old guy 911's, gotta love it.

61 here.

Had a Miata myself, have shifted to SLK's same fun, slightly bigger, some with very large horsepower.

dver··on Sleep apnea: Mouthguards less invasive, just as effective as CPAP
Not at all.

It only contacts my tongue and then my lips.

It took a couple of nights finding the correct position, how far in to stick my tongue, from there it's been no issue.

Less complicated than any of the mouth pieces.

dver··on All-cash offers, wealthy buyers push Southern California home prices to a record
Curious what state did you leave for, and why the exit back?

Reason, live on NoCal and plotting where/what next options. Also know that for us at this point in life that leaving CA is a one way ticket.

dver··on Sleep apnea: Mouthguards less invasive, just as effective as CPAP
I'm using the Aveo, https://na.aveotsd.com/

I'm a pretty big drooler when getting dental work, and I'm ok wearing this device.

dver··on Sleep apnea: Mouthguards less invasive, just as effective as CPAP
Have done a couple of sleep studies, no apnea, but snored terribly. (Have snored my whole life)

During the studies they had me try a CPAP, none chance I would ever be able to wear one. I have a strong gag reflex.

I've worn a number of mouth guards, all fitted by my dentist. I wore them for about 25 years. Absolutely noticed the change in my bite, but was will to put up with it to allow my wife to sleep at night.

I've now changed out to device that holds my tongue. Much less stress on my jaw and works just as well as any of the mouth guards.

dver··on Ask HN: Is a masters in ML worth it?
I'll be hiring this year as well. I'm in the manufacturing domain.

As said a few times below, I'm looking for real work experience. Specifically in the domain.

I also agree, there is going to be a lot more really boring work, mixed in with some new and interesting. Pretty much the job description for most of the IT world.

Very much this.

What ever is being manufactured, the real product is data for process improvements, improve product quality.

dver··on Ask HN: Taking 6-12 months off work?
I just turned 60. I turned a layoff at 27 into a year long sabbatical. (That is what I put on the resume) I didn't have any money and still managed to travel and do volunteer work.

I have never regretted it.

Take the 600k and go somewhere cheaper for awhile.

You'll never get younger and your health is the most important thing for the remainder of your life.

dver··on How true is 'Speed Enforced by Aircraft' Sign? (2016)
I received an airplane ticket in California back in early 90's.

It was the case then, I don't know now, that if there were multiple officers involved in the citation that they both had to show up in court, or the ticket was dismissed.

I had heard through a family member that the pilots never showed in court. So I did and it was quickly dismissed.
